.... jeepers, quite a few "14 day self isolation" possibilities including if you are contacted by NHS track and trace, which could happen anytime.

So as a precaution I guess we need 14 days of rolling stock in the house for the time being.

I get it, I understand I really do. All seems so very real and close to reality now. Going to be a school year unlike any we or our children, parents or even grandparents have ever experienced!

I'm prepared as much as possible for a disruptive school year.
1 of my DCs schools stated to keep children home with cold symptoms (usually told to send them in if just mild cold) which I do understand but kind of worried how the 'cold or sniffles' is going to impact us this year - especially as if it's not Covid then there will be no work set by the school as they'll just be off due to 'illness'.

ineedaholidaynow · 26/08/2020 20:40

I think everyone should be prepared for a disruptive year if you have school aged children

Cuppaand2biscuits · 26/08/2020 20:46

Not to mention all the staff with school age children having to take last minute days off because their own children are unwell and need testing or isolating.
I've just been offered more days at work which would fit perfectly but I'm so reluctant to commit as I feel it's going to be such an uncertain time still. Don't want to be letting people down if I have no choice but to keep my primary school children at home
DH is now back working away Monday to Friday and MIL who usually helps with child care is over 70 so wouldn't want to put her at risk.
Would really like the additional hours which would be a permanent increase but so unsure about what to do.

Shitfuckoh · 26/08/2020 21:02

@Cuppaand2biscuits
There is that, there's also the teaching staff having to take time off too due to being unwell when usually they'd take themselves in to school.

Oh no! That's a difficult one. The not knowing makes situations like yours so much harder doesn't it.

frozendaisy · 26/08/2020 21:05

@Cuppaand2biscuits. Oh yes completely agree school staff with children adds an additional line to the spreadsheet. As does many other parental jobs. I am in a position to finally get some part time work via a friend, which regardless of the impending chaos I am going to do as will regret it if don't, or regret it if I do none of which can be done from home.

It's the showing temperature option that's the killer. Might as well just book in weekly tests now.

Still after this usual school years will feel like a piece of cake.

I don’t yet understand how this is going to work with year 11 (GCSE’s next May). Ofqual have barely removed any content from the exams. How on earth are they going to cover all the content from 17 weeks missed, plus new content, plus revision, if they’re off for every cold? It’s scaring me a bit. Online only goes so far.

ineedaholidaynow · 26/08/2020 21:47

I have DS in Y11, this worries me. If this Government carries on like it is doing they will announce at 11pm the night before GCSEs are to start that they are cancelled

AlohaMolly · 26/08/2020 21:49

I’m in the same position as a PP where I was offered more hours and responsibilities from September and pre lockdown it would have been the perfect move as DS starts full time this year. I’ve turned it down though on the basis that I can’t see him being reliably in school consistently until at least after Christmas Sad

Year 10s here and yes, worried about disruption to their education - as well as focusing on my own busy role.

Buckling up.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 27/08/2020 09:04

I've been awake in the night wondering how it's going to work. Will we need to get our children swabbed every time they have a temperature or do we get a few days at home to monitor them first before we decide? Obviously I understand that if anyone in the house has symptoms then we all need to isolate until a negative test.
How do people who don't have access to a car get tested?
What's the tipping point in terms of staffing for schools before they need to close due to staff shortages?

SqidgeBum · 27/08/2020 09:19

As a teacher I am worried about this too. I have a DD who gets a temperature every time she gets teeth. Over summer I have kept her off nursery twice due to temperatures where I know they would send her home and ask for a swab, but I know the temperature will be gone by the next day. However, being back to work, I can't just keep her off, so I have to risk her being sent home. I have no idea how my school will cover my gcse lessons if I am out for 2 weeks. The kids wont have a consistent teacher, or possibly any teacher bar a substitute who may not have any idea about gcse english. All bar 2 of the staff in my department have kids, so absence is going to be a big problem. Also, as we are exposed to so many kids and other staff with no PPE (for example 5 different teachers a day will be teaching in the same rooms I will be using), we are quite likely to get the virus ourselves.

It's a nightmare to be honest.

frozendaisy · 27/08/2020 09:29

@Cuppaand2biscuits. Our instructions for secondary school for a temperature is to self isolate, contact school daily, return when you get a negative test. So either you await a postal test result or get to a drive-in testing centre.

This is the main problem with "temperature" because the human body goes into temperature when fighting most viruses and bugs.

@SqidgeBum. This is why it's not going to work isn't it. Because the rules apply to everyone, teachers and their families also, very difficult teaching a class without a teacher.
