Obesity increases risk of covid-19 fatality by 50% and may make a vaccine less effective in obese individuals

"The study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill finds that people with obesity, with a BMI over 30, are at greater risk from the coronavirus in every way. Their risk of ending up in hospital with Covid-19 is increased by 113%, they are more likely to be admitted to intensive care (74%) and have a higher risk of death (48%) from the virus."

Could this be why the UK and USA have been much more severely affected considering both countries have high obesity rates of 40% and 30% respectively.

Indeed, @lifesalongsong
In fact nowhere does it say you have to use the Eat Out scheme at all. If you're trying to lose weight you could just avoid it really.

Realitea wow you are really only a size 12/14 and a BMI of 32? I have a BMI of 26 and would never be able to squeeze myself into a 12! 😂 How tall are you? I'm 5'5"

Kitcat122 · 26/08/2020 20:37

@Stayathomer me too. Was a very fit runner with HIIT. Got Covid in March which very badly affected my lungs. Only just started very light exercise recently.

You have to keep a bit of perspective though. My BMI (nearly 40) raises my risk of death from 0.13% to 0.26%. And the risk is probably lower now with better treatments and more known about the virus.

My BMI is much higher than DH’s but his risk is higher 0.28% because he’s male (no other comorbidities for either of us, same age etc).

So get healthy, but bear in mind that age is by far the biggest risk factor. Obesity is very unlikely to mean game over.

Brew Congrats about the light exercise! Joe Wicks posted about starting up his pe again on Saturday and I nearly cried, I did it on and off over lockdown but I cant even fathom now that I'll ever even be able to attempt any of it!

@Miseryl I'm 5ft 2! This is why I don't understand BMI's as I had no idea I was obese until I checked.

@KitKatastrophe

Doesnt obesity make you more susceptible to all sorts of diseases and disorders? It's not that surprising that covid is one of them.
This is what I was going to say
