Boris hands major public safety decision to people unqualified to take it

Wtf Boris?

10pm tonight it was announced that face coverings would be mandatory in communal areas in schools in lockdown areas.

In other areas, heads will be forced to make the decision, ‘according to what they believe is right for their particular circumstances’.

Journalists were briefed earlier in the day that it would be masks for all schools leading to some misleading headlines in the papers, but then the government u-turned on the u-turn introducing a fudge to make it look like they’re not just copying Scotland’s more competent homework.

They’ve got access to advisors, scientists, people who can spend time looking into this properly and who are paid to make tough decisions.

And instead they are leaving it to the poor Heads who are still grappling with the fallout from the exams fiasco? Who may have no scientific background or particular expertise in virus control and who will have to piss off one set of parents or another no matter what they decide (let alone their staff!)

This is pure abrogation of responsibility and incredibly weak leadership.

So this is interesting. Look at the info graphics. Face coverings really should he worn in all indoors crowded areas (classrooms are indoors and crowded) according to this. If you are all silent, the risk of transmission is medium. If a single person is talking or more, the risk is high.

Well, I know Local Authority maintained schools are required to consult with the LA before their governing bodies review and sign off on their risk assessments.

Will this happen for the mask issue?

It is a tough call for a HT.

I really wonder about the phrase "levelling up". It's a very curious use of words. Levelling up, to me, comes from RPG computer games, when you gain enough XP to go up a level. Is he using it to try to sound cool and modern? Because role-playing gamers are not known for being hip and cool, more for their basement dwelling, latex sword collection and intricately plaited beards. Out of touch and desperate to sound relevant is more the impression I get from the phrase.

"He is well on the way to achieving the title of ‘Worst Prime Minister I’m living memory’."

I can remember PMs back to the 1960s - he is by far the most incompetent and unscrupulous I have known, for either party.

Unfortunate timing for the UK

< fingers crossed for schools and teachers >

the Scottish highlands and Glasgow or London

He doesn’t have authority over health or education for two out of three of those locations, thank god.

If I didn't think my dcs' head teacher was more qualified than Boris Johnson to make a decision on basically any topic, they wouldn't be going to school there.

Julmust · 27/08/2020 09:33

Yanbu op. He is trying to arrange it so that if there are corona outbreaks in schools he can blame teachers not public health advice. Ridiculous

MarshaBradyo · 27/08/2020 11:46

Tbh the school has responded well. and I feel satisfied they’ve considered health advice. They have been excellent throughout though.

SaltyAndFresh · 27/08/2020 11:53

I think the public is under the impression that there will be consistency in bubbles too. I'm not sure how year groups in zones for form time but moving and mixing around the school the rest of the day fits in with that. This is what happens if there's too much room for discretion.
