Washable bag to hold facemarks for secondary school?

Wiifitmama · 25/08/2020 21:13

Ds about to start 6th form next week. With news tonight that he might need facemarks, I am trying to get prepared. He takes public transport to get there so will need masks anyway, but I am thinking about a bag to put the mask into so it is not just shoved in his school bag or pocket. Potentially he might need two masks a day, so two bags. I don't want to use ziplock bags as we would need to throw away and replace each day. So is there a washable version that I can just wash with the masks at the end of the day???

I got clear pencil cases from the supermarket. They are washable and reusable.

Wiifitmama · 25/08/2020 21:23

Thanks. Don't really want to wash out and dry plastic each day though. Hoping for something cloth that can just be washed with the masks

I am a nurse, and, at the start of COVID, I was given a small bag made from a pillow case with a drawstring to bring my uniform home from work in and then put the whole lot in the washing machine still in the bag. It was a bit small and other ones were donated that were bigger, so I know use that one to store masks in. I assume there are instructions online because lots of people made these pillow case bags for hospital staff earlier in the year, if you want to try that.

You can get small wet bags for cloth sanitary products which may be suitable.

Can you sew at all? Get an old pillow case or sheet, t-towel, t-shirt or whatever you have, and cut out 12 inches (30cm) or longer by 6 inch.fold lengthways. Sew up both sides. He can pop in there, fold over top opening, then can be chucked in washing machine with mask inside or just in a bowl of soapy water then rinsed
Make 1 for each mask he has
Is that possible for you

Oh wow what a good idea and I think it's great you were donated something to hopefully time save.

How you doing? How's your colleagues? I've heard now things have calmed the real truth of the horror is starting to hit NHs staff ? Sad

Here?

WanderingTrolley1 · 25/08/2020 21:35

I have a set of 3 by Brabantia.

123456abcd · 25/08/2020 21:35

...or here

Dartfordwarbler · 25/08/2020 21:35

Or, ask network of parents at school for those who have sewing machines if the they could make for multiple kids if you Pay reasonable costs- I made on my machine in about 10 mins complete with draw strings and hemmed edges. It’s very simple.

Dartfordwarbler · 25/08/2020 21:38

Or maybe shoutout on Facebook to local sewers like me - I’d make for schools if costs were covered...same as we made scrubs.

RedRiverShore · 25/08/2020 21:42

You might get something from somewhere like Mountain Warehouse or Decathlon as it might be the sort of thing you would use backpacking or camping.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 25/08/2020 21:43

You can get mini wet bags from lots of people on Ebay, Amazon etc. They get sold got cloth san pro, cloth wipes and nappies etc. I already had a few from using the above but got a couple of extras so kids will have once with clean masks in and one for used. If they come to needing to wear masks at school all day they will need a few masks daily as they will get moist from breathing.

Aldi fruit bags

RedRiverShore · 25/08/2020 21:45

Those Brabantia ones linked upthread look ideal.

legalseagull · 25/08/2020 21:47

A sock? Then I'm lazy...

TenCornMaidens · 25/08/2020 21:55

I'm not sure mesh is ideal, is it? You are supposed to store used masks in a way that doesn't let the 'rona out.

Dartfordwarbler · 25/08/2020 21:56

Legalseagull...genius😂😂...now thinking why the **did I make all these bags😳😳

Wiifitmama · 25/08/2020 22:01

Thanks everyone. Sadly I can’t sew. Mesh won’t work as it will not contain a dirty mask safely. Wash bags have a plastic type coating on the inside so not really machine washable. Ideally I need just a cotton draw string bag like the one the nurse mentioned (but much smaller!). And yes, he will need two per day surely.

...a use for odd or outgrown socks, fantastic...

Hedgehog44 · 25/08/2020 22:04

Just get cloth ones and iron them every day.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 25/08/2020 22:06

Wet bags with the coating inside are perfectly washable. It's the same stuff that does the waterproofing on cloth nappies or cloth sanitary pads and those get washed! Believe me my little wet bags go through the wash plenty and are fine.

hedgehogger1 · 25/08/2020 22:15

I just bought some cotton drawstring bags off eBay. They were only a few quid

itsgettingweird · 25/08/2020 22:15

@nitgel

Aldi fruit bags
I'm glad someone else has found other uses for these.

We've used them as bags for beach shoes this summer.
