Jailed for breaking Covid quarantine requirements

If you're in the Isle of Man, there's no nonsense about "doing what you need to do". Man jailed after visiting a bank when a cash machine swallowed his car, woman jailed after visiting a locksmith (which isn't usually something you can put off)..

Disgusting.

Yetiyoga · 23/08/2020 17:56

Is there a link or something? Can you expand on the story?

MereDintofPandiculation · 23/08/2020 18:04

@Yetiyoga LINK - was in the OP on the words "Isle of Man" which were in blue not black indicating they were a link.

Thanks, it hasn't shown up for me as a link (and still hasn't) i will Google :)

The OP is a massive oversimplification really though.

One guy had been to the pub several times.
Second guy had been in the bank and also a mobile phone shop and accepted in court that he had been ‘out and about’ and was in the wrong.
The woman who had been given special dispensation to visit when not a resident had gone to a locksmith shop on the bus.

All three were aware of the rules and chose to break them. The woman who had been given special leave to visit was particularly taking the piss.

GisAFag · 23/08/2020 18:26

Must have been a big cash machine to swallow a car Shock

PigletJohn · 23/08/2020 19:17

I live near an island and the people who live there are very insular, and when the chips are down (e.g. they think they are threatened with the Plague) will blame Mainlanders and say they shouldn't come to the island.

I understand the three people prosecuted on IoM had all recently arrived from GB.

They were lucky not to have been put in a Wicker Man.

Bluebell9 · 23/08/2020 19:28

I live in the Isle of Man. We have now managed to be clear of covid for 100 days and life is back to how it was before.
We want it to stay that way. Our borders are closed to everyone apart from residents coming and going and non residents for exceptional circumstances with prior permission.
Everyone that travels has to quarantine for 2 weeks. They have to submit a declaration 48 hours before travel to confirm they will do this, if not they can be imprisoned or fined.

redastherose · 23/08/2020 19:36

I also live on the Isle of Man, the woman was from Ireland had special permission to come to the island to deal with her mothers estate and went to a locksmith to get advice on opening a safe so not an essential trip at all. She like the Man had signed a legal declaration that they would self isolate at an unoccupied property for 14 days and failed to do so.

InDeoEstMeaFiducia · 23/08/2020 19:40

Would be great if other countries banned tourists from going there again ever, see how well they do without the money they get from tourism.

MereDintofPandiculation · 23/08/2020 20:34

I suppose what I was thinking was that everyone here seems to be rather casual. We find all sorts of reasons why the rules don't apply to us - "must consider my DM's MH" for example. But if you carried that mindset to IoM you could find yourself in prison.

OP posts:
heartsonacake · 23/08/2020 20:38

Good. They knew what could happen if they selfishly chose to break quarantine so now they have to face the consequences of that poor decision.

We need to see more of this.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 23/08/2020 20:39

@MereDintofPandiculation I don't think that's a good thing. Draconian.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 23/08/2020 20:44

Whatever the rights and wrongs of IoM law, if you choose to break the law, you risk facing the consequences.
I know people just back from France who are breaking quarantine, but seems no consequences in the UK.
Whole point being trying to atop the spread of a deadly virus. But a lot of people seem to think they are exempt from the rules.

Speak for yourself instead of using some vague collective. Some of 'us' don't care to live in a police state.

The answer is for us to be as strict as the IOM. Quarantine is for a good reason and these piss-takers deserve their sentences.

InDeoEstMeaFiducia I don’t think you understand what the definition of a police state actually is.

It was no secret that if you broke quarantine you could be jailed. They knew it and did it anyway.

Oh, I understand all too well. I lived all over the world growing up and don't care to live in another draconian place again and glad I don't live in one like the IoM now. See, I'm speaking for myself here, not declaring that 'we' need draconian measures like this in the UK because thank fuck, we don't have such.
JacobReesMogadishu · 23/08/2020 21:22

They’ve had no cases since May....I can see why they’re being strict.

MidnightCitrus · 23/08/2020 21:24

@Waxonwaxoff0

Disgusting.
What is disgusting? the fact they went out when they were not supposed to ?
Waxonwaxoff0 · 23/08/2020 21:26

@MidnightCitrus no, the fact that they've been jailed. Scary how many people are happy about giving up their freedom over a virus.

Bluebell9 · 23/08/2020 21:54

No one is forced to come to the island, but if you do you have to follow our laws. We are far from a police state, but we are covid free and want to stay that way.

MidnightCitrus · 23/08/2020 22:00

you dont have to like the laws of where you are, but you do have to follow them.

Scary how many people are happy about giving up their freedom over a virus. No one is happy, but as far as we know it will slow down the spread of the virus, which is what we need to do. Why do people say that "happy to give up freedom" thats total bollocks.

NotTerfNorCis · 23/08/2020 22:14

Going to prison = life over. Good luck getting a job after that. It seems incredibly harsh, especially when you think of some of the things people can do and not get sent to prison.
