Do you think we will ever see a full nationwide lockdown again?

Im curious as I know so many people who's jobs are holding on by a thread, that if as a nation it happened again (as in back to you can only leave your house once a day etc) it would defiantly end badly for many people.

In my opinion it won't happen again. Even placed like Oldham dont exactly appear to be taking their lock lockdown seriously, I think that by telling family members they can't mix households but then they know they could go and have a pint in the pub and be sat a table away, the human brain just doesn't resignate!

We seem to be a country of all or nothing.

When we were in the height of lockdown I was going food shopping fortnightly, disinfecting everything in the garage before entering my house etc.

Now my 2 dc are back in nursery in bubbles of more than 10, im back at work sat less than 2m away from about 3 people for 8 hours, and will be the first to admit that lockdown life just feels like a distant memory!

No, I don't think there will be a need, local lockdowns seem to be working, we don't need to shut the country down again.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 23/08/2020 16:11

I am 100% certain there will not be another national lockdown.

helpfulperson · 23/08/2020 16:13

No but I think there will be stricter local lockdown like the one at the moment where an entire factory and their family have been told to self isolate.

Squiffany · 23/08/2020 16:45

Around one third of nhs staff are over 50. That’s not counting high BMI or bame colleagues. No way will they all be allowed to shield.

lifeafter50 · 23/08/2020 16:47

No /fooled once, people will not be fooled twice.

lifeafter50 · 23/08/2020 16:50

can't see why they couldn't have been allowed out for walks all along.
Because the lockdown was not to prevent them catching the virus , but to prevent them being a burden on the NHS.
People seem to have lost sight of the original intent which was solely to prevent TV news showing scenes like those in Northern Italy -not surprising with the mission creep that had ensued.

Devlesko · 23/08/2020 16:50

I think there will come a time when there should be, perhaps mid winter. But doubt we will, as schools would have to close and people couldn't work.
The economy will be more important than lives again.

annabel85 · 23/08/2020 17:52

@secretllama

Many people won't do it, myself included. I won't go back to not seeing my parents and sister/niece again. Most people I speak to about this agree with me.
I remember even back in March there was the school of thought around government briefings that 'we can only lockdown once'. At the time that was based more around compliance as they thought people might comply initially but not with further lockdown. In reality, the economy makes it impossible anyway. We've took the worst hit as our economy was built on sand.

If people could just follow basic rules and the fabled 'Great British Common Sense' then we'd be okay.

The economy will be more important than lives

The economy is lives. Ffs. How do you think the NHS is funded? Social care? Police? Prisons? Why do you think the life expectancy in Italy is 84 but in Nigeria it's 55?

cantkeepawayforever · 23/08/2020 17:57

I have seen my parents for what I believe will be the only time this calendar year - they live too far away for me to see them without staying, and as a teacher would not want to be the vector that brings Covid into their (very elderly) lives. There isn't another long enough holiday for me to quarantine again before seeing them until at least Christmas (though obviously having to quarantine throughout the Christmas holidays would be an issue).

It's not pleasant, but if it keeps them alive, it's much better than the alternative.

IncidentsandAccidents · 23/08/2020 17:58

No, cases are so localised now and I think this will continue. The key will be to respond quickly when there are local spikes.

NailsNeedDoing · 23/08/2020 18:00

No, not because of covid at least. Who knows what weird illness will develop next.

anditgoeson · 23/08/2020 18:01

No, I dont think the country can afford it.

I think if anything there will be localised lock downs and restrictions but still go to work etc.

cantkeepawayforever · 23/08/2020 18:02

Sorry, meant to say - no, I don't think there will be a full national lockdown, though I think there will be points in the winter where several significant population centres are under restrictions (Greater Manchester already is, Birmingham looks to be following it soon etc). However, i do think there will be many people who will choose to live part or all of their lives under lockdown restrictions or not do some of what is technically 'allowed', in order to keep the vulnerable safe.

FredaFox · 23/08/2020 18:02

No but mainly because the economy couldn’t cope and I don’t think people will comply
I live in a localised lockdown. People are not abiding by it, they are out mask free mixing with whoever they like. If local lockdowns are to be one a thing for a second wave they need to be followed and fines given etc if people don’t do it. Other countries have fined and it’s worked
The police are under funded however so we are screwed

WutheringBites · 23/08/2020 18:07

Well. It depends on how many people get sick enough to need hospital care. Sadly, hospitals rely on actual people to staff them, so capacity is limited by workforce.
basically, with things as they stand, possibly we may see another lockdown Sad

Charleyhorses · 23/08/2020 18:10

I don't think so for covid 19. But it's a whole new game isn't it?

Perching · 23/08/2020 18:13

We cannot afford it.

Thanksitsgotpockets · 23/08/2020 19:18

No. I won't be playing the game next time..

kittensarecute · 23/08/2020 20:09

As I have said before I won't cope if there is. If I have to go too much longer being denied the things I love most i will be seriously contemplating suicide. I don't know how long I can cope with all these restrictions on my life.

Hmmmmminteresting · 23/08/2020 20:14

Im glad we are on the same page! The amount of people I see on Social Media saying things along the lines of "great, definitely heading for another national lockdown" and I always sit thinking Hmm really? I genuinely don't think we will either. I feel our days of being complaint have long passed and the goverment know this

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 23/08/2020 20:35

No. I don't think there we I'll be any scenario in which we experience the same level of lockdown. The economy needs people to be working. At worst, I think we'll all be expected to wear masks outside the home.

Yes I think so too. I think masks will be pretty much permanent now.
Inkpaperstars · 23/08/2020 22:52

I think a national lockdown would certainly happen before they would let the virus rage out of control, ie. grow exponentially to a natural peak. At that point there would be nothing to lose from locking down...jobs, schools etc would collapse more from unchecked growth of the virus. There isn't a option to just let the virus do its stuff while carrying on as normal....the numbers sick at the same time would prevent that.

That said, unless the situation is badly mishandled by either the govt and/or the public, it won't be needed.
