How many layers should my mask have?

I have bought a mask with 2 layers and a slot for a filter to make it 3. My friend made one which was one layer. I've ordered one from vistaprint which is 5 layers but it hasn't arrived yet. Is 5 layers unnecessary? Thinking I might cancel it. What's the advice re layers for a mask please?

I think just check it’s waterproof.
Put it under the tap some drops.
Nothing should come through other side.
You may be amazed the flimsy looking blue disposable ones are waterproof. Try it.

The advice I have seen for best results was 3, one cotton, one artificial and one non woven.

But I think the main difference is mask v no mask so I wouldn’t stress.

Waterproof!?
how are you supposed to breathe through something that's waterproof?

Didn’t believe you. Tried it. You were right!

I am not sure it’s necessary for home made non surgical face coverings though.

Things can be breathable and waterproof at the same time. Nobody bothered tell whoever made my raincoat though
