Dd coughing- now what?

DD (3) has been coughing through the night and had a runny nose (nothing during the day yesterday). I am off work anyway today and I'll keep her off school but I don't know what I need to do now. Do I need to call 111, do I need to have everyone in the house tested? What are the government guidelines for this now- I'm in pure panic and I don't really understand what I need to do now Sad

You keep her at home and you send off for a test. If she also has a runny nose its probably something else but you should get her tested.

They arrive within 48 hours and you get the results back within 48 hours too.

Or you go to the drive in testing centre

CodenameVillanelle · 21/08/2020 07:15

Go online and see if there is a test centre near you, it's quicker than sending off for a test. If the result is negative no need to isolate further but you must isolate until you have the results

Go on gov UK site. Advice is there.

HeyBlaby · 21/08/2020 07:19

Only those with symptoms get a test, as above, .gov website and get a home one (which will take longer) or drive through, usually back in 24 hours or so, household isolate until negative result comes back.

Other option is to not test but for whole household to isolate for 14 days.

zeeba · 21/08/2020 07:23

So book test and family isolates until results are back?

As the others said, just get her tested at a drive through centre. Results are normally back within 1-2 days.

zeeba · 21/08/2020 07:24

I understand that @Eyewhisker but what I'm asking is if we all have to isolate until results are back?

Yes of course you have go to isolate until you have a negative result. How do people still not know this?

CodenameVillanelle · 21/08/2020 07:28

@zeeba

I understand that *@Eyewhisker* but what I'm asking is if we all have to isolate until results are back?
Yes obviously, or you could all be spreading Covid around Sheesh
DamitJanet · 21/08/2020 07:29

Get her a test, either a home kit or at a centre and while household isolates either until you get a negative result (usually 24hrs at a test centre, longer for a home kit). If she does have Covid then the household isolated for 14 days.

zeeba · 21/08/2020 07:30

I'm only asking because we live with other family members who are meant to work today and I'm worried they won't listen to me.

Yes, she needs to test and anyone in the house needs to self isolate until the results are back.

My DD is 3, and we had the same issue last weekend. Call 119 for advice. At first we were told that because her temp lasted only 24 hours and she doesn't have what they class as a persistent cough, she didn't need to be tested. That night she was coughing a lot so we called 119 again and asked them to book us in at the earliest appointment at the nearest test centre (Drive-in). My DD goes to nursery and we rely on that to be able to work, so we wanted to make sure she was tested and cleared before we sent her back with a cough that was sure to linger for a few more days! We all got tested and came back negative! It's not pleasant but the whole process was very quick and we had the results by email the following morning at 7am!

skankingpiglet · 21/08/2020 08:05

Yes, get a drive through test then isolate until the results arrive. You can load up to 4 of you into the car to get tested at the same time too for extra piece of mind. You can book online or through 119.

DD2 (4yo) had a cough a couple of weeks ago that we were sure was nothing sinister, but still got her tested. DH and DD1 also got tested. There is around a 30% chance of a false negative I believe, so we felt the results would be more accurate if they all came back negative (as chances are if she had Covid she would be kind enough to share it with us too). The results were back within 12hrs for DH and DD1, and 24hrs for DD2.

Bring a good bribe for during/after the test. It is quite uncomfortable and hard to bear for a small person who doesn't fully understand why they have to go through it.

When my ds had a temp last week we drove to a test site and our whole family were able to be tested. It was quick and easy, my ds 9 and 11 were fine with the test and we got the results in less than 24 hours.
