Can't believe it's finally coming to an end (having the kids home not the virus)

I've got mixed feelings. It's going to be bitter sweet schools restarting. I'm hoping normality will help people feel better. I have my worries but lockdown has made me ill. I really hope a few weeks of routine will settle my troubled mind. I'm sad its going to be so different though. Not even allowed lunch in the hall and can't see friends in the other class. But I just hope its positive for everyone. I also hope that a vaccine is available soon to put an end to all this worry. But I know it's unlikely. I'm very nervous about the winter months too.

How's everyone else feeling?

@sunseekin at no point did I dismiss anyones concerns or suggest anyone become complacent about anything in fact I think I specifically said "obviously we can't become complacent "

We also do have to bare in mind that hospital admissions do generally go up during the colder months so we need to make sure we are only getting concerned if the amount of admissions that are over and above what would be normal for the time of year.

Illusionordelusion · 20/08/2020 18:02

I can’t wait in all honesty. It’s been tough having mine at home with me constantly. I’m someone who needs time to herself to breathe and gather my thoughts. I think come September I’ll feel relieved, but also quite low. I’ve found it pretty tough on my mental health but my kids wouldn’t have picked up on that. We have kept so busy, had loads of days out, a lovely holiday etc etc. It’s been a long time though of putting everyone else’s needs before my own.

I’m done in.

Back to work in September too, I work in a college and I’m not completely sure what my new role entails as I started it a week before lockdown. So I still won’t have time to breathe....

Still.... it will be good for the kids to get back into the routine of school and life.

unrulytoenails · 20/08/2020 18:16

Scottish schools been back for a week and there are at least 19 positive cases in pupils and staff. Two school closures.

Been watching and had been hoping but now seems tricky.

Really apprehensive tbh.

Feellikedancingyeah · 20/08/2020 18:18

Totally relieved. I am shattered!

Shieldingending · 20/08/2020 18:23

As a teacher who was in the shielding group I’m terrified. I absolutely think that children should be back however I’m supposed to have a covid secure workplace which a special school isn’t ....

loulouljh · 20/08/2020 18:30

I cannot wait. My kids need to be back at school and I need to be able to properly concentrate on work after so many months. I just hope they can operate properly get an education rather than spending their time following crazy rules. Time will tell.

ohthegoats · 20/08/2020 19:00

'Crazy rules' that keep people safe.

Other crazy rules:
Seatbelts
Safety checks on commercial aircraft
Drinking age 18
Murder isn't ok.

PleasantVille · 20/08/2020 19:01

@mumsneedwine

Scotland has just reported the highest number of new cases in 3 months.
How many of the new cases arose in schools?
TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 20/08/2020 19:02

DD is back next Wednesday, we're in Leicester so still can't have people round to our houses or gyms/leisure centres open but school will be fine apparently.

DD is in year 2, her school are not doing staggered starts/ends, the whole year is a bubble so 90 children across 3 classes.

As far as I can tell the only changes are that desks are lined up to all face forwards but not 1 m apart and no assemblies.

KatherineOfGaunt · 20/08/2020 19:19

I'm just hoping I don't get ill. As an SEN teacher, if I can't go in my pupils don't get the required hours on their EHCPs and my fellow SEN teacher will have to try and take up the slack on her own. Plus two of the 1:1 staff members in my bubble are vulnerable/have been shielding since March so I don't want to give it to them by being in a classroom not much bigger than my living room for 3 students and 3 adults and spending all day in there.

I do want to go back, for my pupils. It's just the unknown is mentally draining right now.

lillylemons · 20/08/2020 19:20

I'm glad that schools are re-opening but dd is not too happy about it has her friends are in another form so she won't get to mix with her friends in school. She really struggles to make friends and never clicked with anyone in her form.
I can't wait for a little bit of normality and some quiet time when dd's at school.

TheUnwindingCableCar · 20/08/2020 19:33

Honestly can't wait. My kids need to be back for their mental health and ours.

I wouldn't be surprised if it all goes tits up by Halloween but I'll be thankful for the break no matter how short.

TheUnwindingCableCar · 20/08/2020 19:35

Our school is doing staggered start and end times and on PE days kids are to wear their kit for the day so no need to get changed.

Not heard of anything else yet but I'm sure there will be more. They did so well before summer.

Sorry should have been clearer, wasn’t implying you did, it was previous posts referring to idiots and 77 being a small normal that struck me as complacent. You made very good points in a reassuring manner.

Quartz2208 · 20/08/2020 20:46

1/3 of the scottish cases though is one factory outbreak

Also with the Dundee school its 8 adults at the moment - have any children had a positive

dementedpixie · 20/08/2020 20:47

And its adults connected to the school I.e. it doesn't say they are teachers

Uhoh2020 · 20/08/2020 21:21

@sunseekin sorry should have been clearer

latticechaos · 20/08/2020 21:24
@sunseekin numbers have been increasing since pubs reopened over a month ago. Hospital admissions are still continuing to decrease. We would have seen more admissions by now if there were going to be any. Potential explanations are younger people catching the virus who get a milder version.
Today's numbers in England we're up, driven by an increase in pillar one tests, which suggests increased hospital admissions.

We all hope for the best, but it'd be wise to let the data emerge.

The other worrying thing is the increase in positive tests was despite a reduction in number of tests.

ArthurMorgan · 20/08/2020 21:46

I don't want mine to go back but purely because I'll miss her! We've got into a nice routine during lockdown and I'm sad to have it end ☹️

Mummypig2020 · 20/08/2020 21:51

Counting down the minutes. They are amazing but there’s only so many months I can be locked in a small house with 3 Dc before I go insane and I’m very very close.

monkeytennis97 · 20/08/2020 21:55

Can I just ask all those parents who 'can't wait' for the kids to go back to please, please support their teachers as many of us are very scared due to lack of PPE/SD/poor ventilation and potential high viral load. As far as I can see school (particularly secondaries) won't feel 'back to normal' for the kids by and large due to teachers moving, kids being out of specialist rooms, teachers staying at front of classes all the time (very unnatural for teaching), year groups not mixing, some specialist equipment not being used, marking reduced due to quarantined exercise books etc

Uhoh2020 · 20/08/2020 22:09

The other worrying thing is the number of positive tests despite a reduction in the number of tests

Todays figures are based on 190,000 tests processed, the day before was 163,000 the day before 150,000. Today's figures of tests processed is the highest amount since the 31st July. We have not reduced the amount of testing! The percentage of positive outcomes from today's tests processed is 0.62%

Dunno.

The item said positives were up, tests v slightly down.

I don't know whether your numbers are the same as their numbers Grin

latticechaos · 20/08/2020 22:19

Found the item @Uhoh2020

The number of people testing positive for coronavirus in England has risen by over a quarter, new figures show.

There were 6,616 people whose tests came back positive between 6-12 August - an increase of 27% compared with the previous week.

This was despite a 2% drop in the number of people who were tested. The figures also show this was the first week that showed a notable increase in positive tests carried out at NHS facilities.

Paul Hunter, professor in medicine at Norwich school of medicine, said: “The fact that positive diagnoses have risen at a time when the number of tests are remaining fairly static does suggest that the incidence of Covid-19 in the community is now beginning to rise again.

“The additional sharp rise in pillar 1 tests being positive in particular supports this assumption. Because pillar 1 tests are done in NHS facilities, they are more likely driven by clinical need than pillar 2 tests and are a somewhat better indicator of the number of people becoming ill enough to seek medical attention.

“Clearly if this trend continues the demands on the test track and trace service and on the NHS will increase over coming weeks.”
