What do you think the situation will be like this time next year?

Do you think we will have a successful vaccine?

Do you think lockdown will be over?

Do you think social distancing / face mask wearing will be over?

Do you think we will be back to our “old normal”

I certainly hope things are much better!

I think we will have a vaccine and things will be somewhere close to being back to normal.

Illusionordelusion · 19/08/2020 21:08

With or without a vaccine, very much back to normal.

Yep, this.

Not 100% due to the time it will take to run full vaccination programme.

If we're fully back on track by 2022 I'll be happy.

DespairingHomeowner · 19/08/2020 21:10

I think we may well have a reasonable Vaccine (but not mass vaccination at that point) will have a lot more knowledge on treatments, effective test & trace, continuance of masks/some social distancing, but we will get on with things and be somewhat normal ... based on following closely how fast things are progressing in different countries

Of course I’d love return of ‘old normal, but don’t think we will be quite there

Qasd · 19/08/2020 21:10

No to a vaccine

No to a general lockdown although maybe local restrictions

Increasing sense of a generation “war” between young people whose primary concerns are the economic situation, their lost education and the sense their lives remain on hold and the older generation who feel a continued risk to their health down to young people “not taking it seriously enough”

I think masks will have become totally normal and will remain pretty common even if there are medical advances

Even a year on there will still be some people claiming the whole thing is “fake”!

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 19/08/2020 21:13

I think we'll have a vaccine and transmission will be low, but the economy will be shot to pieces with high job losses, although slowly starting to recover.

More concerned about the economy than the health impact of the virus tbh

TheoriginalLEM · 19/08/2020 21:14

I think we'll have a vaccine but not everyone will take it. It will be offered to the vulnerable first.

We'll probably be also dealing with a novel flu virus and we risk failing in a vaccine for that because resources are focusing on Covid.

I think the economic impact of it will be starting to really show and we will see the emotional and behavioural impact in children and young people.

People will still be wearing masks, maybe by choice.

Do you mean a flu pandemic? God I want to go live on the moon Grin

good question!

Do you think we will have a successful vaccine?
Not a widespread one in that time frame. Hopefully better treatment available

Do you think lockdown will be over?

Still restrictions in place. It's been 5 months and things are still far from normal. When more restrictions lift, cases rise

Do you think social distancing / face mask wearing will be over?

Social distancing: No. Face masks: I hope so!

Do you think we will be back to our “old normal

No. A new normal. Not necessarily a negative thing, less crowds permitted etc

TheoriginalLEM · 19/08/2020 21:20

No, i just mean a seasonal flu that we have every year. The vaccines are generally easier to develop though due to the type of virus, however it will be a significant problen

WhoWants2Know · 19/08/2020 21:32

I think that some of the changes that have come about because of Covid19 will have become ingrained through long habit. So even post vaccine, people will have a tendency to stand further apart and will probably feel less comfortable at large, crowded events.

There will be a push to build our way out of recession, and a shift towards manual, practical work and away from the service industry.

As work and recreation eventually begin to return to their regular pace, many of us will realise that our bodies are no longer acclimated to the lifestyle we had before. Our immune systems are going to take another hit as a result, when we run into colds and bugs that we would usually shake off.

Bluewavescrashing · 19/08/2020 21:37

Bigger gap between rich and poor people.

amieejust · 19/08/2020 21:38

I think it will have largely faded into the background as with other illnesses such as chicken pox, measles etc.

We may start seeing the long term effects on people who have had Covid.

Possibly a vaccine or cure may have been found by then and people will have started receiving it.

The economy will be slowly starting to recover after mass job losses over the last year.

Mass poverty will be an issue and the gap between the rich and poor, the haves and the have nots, will be bigger than ever.

Social distancing will be over and masks will be optional.

Possibly another new virus may have been unleashed on us but hopefully not.

A lot can change in 12 months, as we've discovered....

hopeishere · 19/08/2020 21:41

I really don't know.

tobee · 19/08/2020 21:45

I think we might have a timeframe. So at least some sort of vaccine (or several) and treatments and people will know when they will be inline for these developments.

I think that would make a big difference to people. People have found it very hard having to make such major decisions, both individuals and businesses and organisations.

Walkaround · 19/08/2020 21:59

We won’t be back to our old normal, regardless, because vaccine or no vaccine, coronavirus continuing to be a massive issue or not, the world economy will have changed massively and that will take years to recover from.

MMN123 · 19/08/2020 22:00

Gender pay gap will widen further.

Domestic violence will continue to increase.

COVID will still be about.

No vaccine but deaths will stay relatively controlled. Periodic local lockdowns.

Concerning if Angela Merkel is looking at continuing furlough for 2 years. If that’s actually true.

There was a thread ages ago where I was accused of being a scaremongering pessimist for suggesting all wouldn’t be rosy in the garden by this September!

RaspberryRuff · 19/08/2020 22:05

I think there will be a vaccine. I would roll it out to front line workers and school children first and then some of the vulnerable group depending on their condition/age and whether a vaccine is suitable for them.

We will still have to self isolate/test/contact trace and quarantine for any cases that do pop up

Other than that I think daily like in the U.K. anyway will be pretty normal but we will still have high unemployment.

RaspberryRuff · 19/08/2020 22:06

Covid will always we about. Hopefully through once we have a vaccine even if it’s not magic and people have that or have had the virus and been OK then it won’t be so bad or spread so widely, but it’s always going to cause deaths of the elderly in winter as flu does.

Yes we'll have a vaccine 🤞 Yes lockdown will be over Possibly SD and masks still being worn indoors and public transport Still in the steps of getting back to normal. International travel will not be the same.
RaspberryRuff · 19/08/2020 22:09

And international travel won’t be the same. I won’t be going on a plane for as long as mask wearing is mandatory for a start.

itsgettingweird · 19/08/2020 22:14

Much more normal. We had a terrible wave and things have been better over summer.

If we can manage winter then next year I think we'll have less community transmission and more immunity (t cells or vaccine)

Chris Whitty made a comment during a briefing once indicating next spring would be over the very worst.

IcedPurple · 19/08/2020 22:15

I don't think so. People very quickly revert to the norm. As soon as things are relaxed, people will quickly go back to the 'old' ways and all this will seem like a weird blip.

I also think - or like to think - that this time next year we'll have a vaccine and life will be pretty much back to normal, except for the enduring economic effects which will not be pretty and will go on for quite some time.

duffeldaisy · 19/08/2020 22:16

A lot of gloomy predictions!
I think more than one vaccine will be up and running, & Mumsnet will be full of discussions on which to have early next year.

I think frontline workers and the vulnerable will have had jabs by this time next year, though the government will manage to inexplicably leave out one vulnerable group from the first wave of vaccines, because that’s what they do with everything.

By this time next year, people who want a jab will probably have got one, but there’ll be a bit of outrage when some people not wanting vaccines are then not allowed to travel to other countries until they have. Many people will be campaigning for the government to hurry up in getting on with the international programme to get vaccines to less wealthy countries.

I think more people will continue to work from home at least part-time if possible, people will tend to distance slightly more, and managers will encourage staff with contagious illnesses to stay off work, by paying sick pay. People might even wear masks if they have colds, so annual flu/cold figures will drop massively.

There will be a move away from cities- homes with gardens will become more expensive.

The economy will be pretty grim, the government will be grumbled about for doing nothing. Boris Johnson will resign and go and write books or something, and his successor will struggle almost as much. We’ll make more use of open air spaces, and schools by then will have more funding for digital provision. Coursework will be back, by popular demand from parents, and university admission will change to January each year, so that finalised grades can be part of the process, and new undergraduates have a chance to work and save money before the first term.

itsgettingweird · 19/08/2020 22:18

Even a year on there will still be some people claiming the whole thing is “fake”!

I had lifeguard in local centre say she couldn't believe they were making this out to be still be worse than flu.

I asked her when flu had ever killed approx 1000 people a day for weeks on end?

She said there was the Spanish flu. To which I pointed out that was also a pandemic and to look up the global death rate!
