Would you test?

So DD (3) woke up this morning with a blocked nose and is sneezing on and off. She is off nursery until next week anyway so is home with me.

I have taken her temp a few times and it is perfectly normal, she is acting fine, she hasn't coughed at all and is eating fine (i.e. loads!) so I assume sense of taste is as usual.

To be on the safe side I went on the NHS Scotland site and did the symptom test which says they don't believe it to be Covid and a test isn't needed. Fine. We will stay at home until she is better anyway.

However a few people (family & friends) who I have texted or spoken to for various reasons today seem to think I should just be booking a test anyway and even lying about symptoms if needed to ensure she has one. 'You can never be too sure' they all seem to say.

It is quite an invasive test for a 3 year old, I don't feel like I need to put her through it when she does't actually have Covid symptoms?

Just trying to gather a consensus here - would you test?

FWIW I totally appreciate the seriousness of Covid and have known people who have been seriously ill and died but I don't think it is necessarry to test for every single sign of any type of illness...or is it?

I wouldn’t test for a blocked nose and sneezing.
I did for my sons continuous new cough- was negative.

Artesia · 19/08/2020 13:40

Absolutely not- why on earth would you test when she’s showing no symptoms? Ignore the friends and family OP- they are nuts!

Frazzled13 · 19/08/2020 13:54

'You can never be too sure' they all seem to say.

By that logic we should all get tested every day, in case we're asymptomatic.

Todaythiscouldbe · 19/08/2020 14:00

No I absolutely wouldn't. We can't all get tested every time we have a headache/sniffle/dry throat, it would be constant. Some people are very OTT about it though.

lljkk · 19/08/2020 14:30

Screening form said no need to test so I would not test.

premiumshoes · 19/08/2020 14:35

No I wouldn't. There are threads and threads on here of people who would, and have though

My son started sneezing on Monday, we didn’t test! Woke up coughing and snotty on Tuesday so we tested (he didn’t actually mind the test and seemed to have all but forgotten about it a few hours later!). Today still coughing (but chesty as he always is with a cold) and test has come back negative!

I personally think we should have a low threshold for testing (as you never know) but equally wouldn’t test without one of the symptoms.

Thanks all. Glad it's not just me.

If she does develop symptoms I will book a test asap, I'm taking this all very seriously but do think there is a fine line between taking it seriously and getting a bit hysterical about it all.

A 3 year old is going to have a lot of blocked or runny noses so it would mean loads of testing for her if I were to get it done every time

Just to say I am in the exact same situation as you are! My little one woke up this morning with a sniffle and blocked nose no cough or high temp. Behaving and eating / drinking fine and other than the sniffle is quite happy. Fortunately she is off nursery next week but it is hard to know whether to test.
