When do we think will masks become optional?

November? There was mention of social distancing no longer being a thing by then?

France and Spain both made masks mandatory before the UK, they're worn in more areas and (if Mumsnetters are to be believed Hmm) there are no exemptions and rigorous enforcement. New cases keep going up. Maybe masks aren't actually as effective as people think.

ChaBishkoot · 18/08/2020 18:53

Blame the government for that then. Blame the govt for everything relating to COVID.

You don’t have to be happy about wearing a mask- I don’t find it fun but it’s a lot less fun when we had shelter in place policies and couldn’t leave the house. But I am not indulging in hyperbole about it restricting my freedom or causing acne or terrifying my children.

lookingforamindatwork · 18/08/2020 18:57

I'm worried about the fact France has made them mandatory in workplaces. I would find that very hard if it was repeated here in the UK too. I have disabilities by the way and I am actually within the exemption criteria. Its difficult enough dealing with shops, banks etc, but having arguments with my employer and colleagues as well, is not something I feel I can cope with. Its been difficult enough just arguing with shop workers who don't understand invisible disabilities.

People seriously this pathetic about masks?

Oh that's the other one for the bingo card!

There’s your answer, @SecretSpAD. Clearly, they are.

MN is weird these days. It seems to be full of the overspill from the Daily Mail comments section.

HeresMe · 18/08/2020 19:25

Yeah I've found plenty on Mumsnet pathetic about masks, having no empathy for those who can't wear them due to past trauma that scared they think people should be wearing them every second of day, proper disabledism, wanting people to wear them outdoors when no risk and if you can't wear one don't go out.

Oh sorry that wasn't what you meant pathetic works both ways.

BuzzFeed773 · 18/08/2020 19:31

There's a difference between being pathetic and having empathy, @HeresMe.

Very few people can't, and some just won't, wear one. I judge those who won't. Secretly, behind my mask. I would do it face-to-face if I knew anyone in real life, but fortunately I don't.

HeresMe · 18/08/2020 19:35

@BuzzFeed773

So you say difference between empathy, but then in your post you judge people showing zero empathy.

So when you are secretly judging behind your mask how do you know the person you are judging isnt exempt? Or do you expect those exempt to carry a placard above their head so you know who to judge and not to judge? How about dont judge anyone especially those you know nothing about and just get on with minding your own business
DrinkFeckArseGirls · 18/08/2020 19:39

I don’t know why people thing that in the winter there’ll be leas social distancing/ mask wearing. Surely it'll be more stringent as the coronovirus infections (not just covid19) tend to go up in winter. So will covid.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 18/08/2020 19:40

Excuse the typos 🙄

respiratory infections always go up in the winter we've never had to social distance or wear masks before for what is a normal trend
BuzzFeed773 · 18/08/2020 19:42

No, I judge those who won't. I have empathy for those who can't. I judge those who wear them on their chin, under their nose, on their wrist... And there are plenty of those.

BuzzFeed773 · 18/08/2020 19:43

@Uhoh2020

Please see my reply above. In case you miss it.

midgebabe · 18/08/2020 19:45

Respiratory infections may usually go up in winter without us having to wear masks, those infections however don't normally have the capacity to bring the NHS and society to its knees

ChaBishkoot · 18/08/2020 19:47

Just pointing out that flu season NORMALLY brings the NHS to its knees every year. Was it last year or the year before that every PICU bed in England was occupied?!

Burnthurst187 · 18/08/2020 20:02

From what I've seen when shopping masks appear to be optional now

BuzzFeed773 · 18/08/2020 20:11

We live in the South East, where I have barely seen anyone in supermarkets without masks or wearing them incorrectly.

We are on holiday in Scotland. Loads of people in the shops and at tourist attractions pulling them down, wearing them under their chin or nose. I have been giving hard stares, and many pull them up again.

MillicentMargaretAmanda · 18/08/2020 20:15

Had a new one today. Someone wearing a mask in a swimming pool. Great infection control being practised there... Envy (not envy!)

HeresMe · 18/08/2020 20:42

I'd mind my own business , but you have already said you are judgemental, so mind your own business about what other people are doing.

BuzzFeed773 · 18/08/2020 20:44

I mind it silently from behind my mask. Pretty harmless!

byvirtue · 18/08/2020 21:08

10 weeks? Isn’t that how long the clap for nhs lasted?? It’s another government tactic to placate the plebs. Masks are bullshit, wear a mask protect others, fine if you are one of the 0.01% who is carrying Covid asymptomatically but the stats show the majority of people are not currently infected with covid so we are all wearing them on the minuscule chance we come in contact with someone infected with Covid, it’s nonsense, but sure let’s all wear a mask and pretend everyone is infectious Hmm

Sure there will be pressure from the retail industry if figures continue in this vein:

news.sky.com/story/coronavirus-fewer-supermarket-visits-after-face-mask-rules-introduced-12051709?fbclid=IwAR2AAqSjsgnKKlf5iPNfEPL-4Hh030Nt-yQ2YGHEuyeuQCcvRoj1Mvjk_TY

Click and collect for me since they were introduced and no non essential shopping.

Ellsbells12 · 18/08/2020 22:18

@ohflourofscotland

March 2021 or March 2022 are the two dates I've heard today through colleagues who have contacts in different fields
Honestly don't think people will do it until March 22 they are getting pissed off nos

Exactly this for me. I was never a fan of online shopping but until masks become optional I'll avoid all non essential shops.

Wearing a mask makes me feel claustrophobic and anxious and shopping is (or was) an enjoyable experience for me, now I can't wait to get out so tend not to bother even going in.
