"If your child has been wearing a face covering before arriving at school or college, it will be important that they understand how to remove it."

"The government has asked schools to have a process for ensuring face coverings are removed when pupils and staff who use them arrive at school and this should be clearly communicated."

Latest updated government advice for parents. How infuriating!! So schools need to actively encourage pupils to take their masks off rather than wear them in the classroom! And also stating that they encourage individual social distancing where possible. It's not possible! I wish they'd stop burying their heads in the sand and get on with giving teachers some protection for next term without just calling us all whingers and to think of the children.

Anyone else fed up and dreading September? Secondary school teacher here with 14 classes, year 7-11. Tiny classroom but luckily I have windows that open a smidge.

Well probably not the car windows in this case.

My son's science class is socially distanced, there's only 15 of them in a big lab and it all faces the front - in fact, all classes have been designed to face front now. All departments have break-out spaces (it's a new building) which teachers are using for small groups. PE is continuing as normal outside. I'm aware having a new building puts a different complexion on things, but at senior school level some class groups are small which means social distancing is possible.

Well quite, @Sleepyblueocean. Covid's come in and any concern for the environment's gone out the window. Our local paths are littered with masks. School cleaners shouldn't have to deal with that.

flumposie · 17/08/2020 13:31

Yanbu. Ridiculous. They should keep them on.

FlySheMust · 17/08/2020 13:33

Plenty of schools will do the decent thing and tell them to leave them on, for everyone's safety.

Uhoh2020 · 17/08/2020 13:56

I dont think it should be compulsory to wear masks in schools but I think it should be allowed if students want too. I don't think teachers should wear masks it cant be conducive to teaching if the teacher is muffled behind a mask a visor would be better, again not compulsory but voluntary if the teacher wishes too.

WindFlower92 · 17/08/2020 20:31

That's good for him @LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett, but probably coincidental! None of my classes have less than 25 pupils this year. 3 years ago would have been great, I had 5 in one class then!

This is good fortune but irrelevant because it isn't the case for most schools.
latticechaos · 17/08/2020 21:02
My workplace has specified visors are not a suitable replacement for masks.

So how is the teacher's meant to understand what the children are saying. Behind their masks. Hmm

In my Au school both teachers and students wore masks. They managed.

echt · 17/08/2020 22:10

Bloody random apostrophe.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 17/08/2020 22:58

OP asked who was going to be in a socially distanced classroom.

I replied that my son is, for some lessons.

I'm well aware that's the luck of the draw, but it does happen and it's not that unusual for senior subjects in smaller schools in Scotland. Not the norm, maybe, but not unheard of either.

ineedaholidaynow · 17/08/2020 23:06

@LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett one of DS's subjects only has him and one other pupil in it, I wish he could stay in that group all the time! Unfortunately all his other subjects are more popular.

His school have also said that if pupils want to wear masks in the day they can.
