Kids and supermarkets

Can't find much on this from recent weeks - is it seen as ok to take kids into supermarkets now or will I be frowned at?! Would like to take DS who's 4 and would need to take 2mo who would be in a buggy. 4yo will stay close to me. Or should I only do it if really necessary?

Have been very cautious due to baby/pregnancy so not sure on the lay of the land.

Absolutely fine! I have taken mine and felt very safe! Lots of others also taking kids

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/08/2020 12:42

No one cares. I'm a single parent so I've had no choice but to take DS throughout lockdown. The only people who "frown upon" it are some busybody MNers.

Pertella · 14/08/2020 12:44

Seen as OK by who? Its not a problem, although no doubt you will soon be accused of wanting to kill grannies.

Its really shit that people are concerned about how other people might react to them for taking their own young children into the supermarket with them.

I'm not having a go at you OP, just at the fact that people feel they need to get the approval of strangers to do a mundane thing like take their young children with them to the shop.

Gizlotsmum · 14/08/2020 12:50

There was no one 'policing' the entrance the last few times I went so I think the whole 1 person per household thing is no longer being enforced.

netflixismysidehustle · 14/08/2020 12:53

It's absolutely fine to take a child and always was. When people complained about the presence of kids at the start of the pandemic because there were 2 adults so one should have looked after the child in the car or outside.

Chaosalways · 14/08/2020 12:57

It's absolutely fine

Plenty of shops had a "no children" rule. And many people on here had a problem with it. There was a thread posted by a mum recovering from surgery or similar, whose husband took the kids to the supermarket and she was absolutely slated for doing so. I'm sure the phrase "terrified old ladies" featured in multiple responses.
Hurryupbaby11 · 14/08/2020 13:33

Thanks all! We will go and enjoy it (DS seems strangely excited - probably the thought of the chocolate aisle!) Takes after his mum...

@Pertella - no, I know what you mean, I shouldn't worry about what others think, do it far too much. Was just a bit wary after some of the posts from a few months ago around this! Appreciate things have moved on a bit now.

I avoided taking mine during the lockdown but I had that option.

I did hear on here about no children rules, but I saw kids going into supermarkets and I never saw anyone challenged or even looked at funny.

angelofthelight · 14/08/2020 13:40

I've taken mine but was so stressful at the best of times. Messing around and not listening. I get my food shop delivered now so much easier.

Found it. Many many posters telling the OP "you should be ashamed" , "absolutely no regard for anyone else", "you are irresponsible".

No wonder OP here is worried about people tutting about her taking the kids shopping. FWIW OP you can take them with you - people in real life are far less frothy than mumsnetters. And the risk is low now so generally taking kids places is more acceptable.

Remmy123 · 14/08/2020 13:47

Yes of course it's ok!! It's like normal when you go to the shops now apart from mask wearing

Mrsdoubtfireswig · 14/08/2020 13:50

Single parent, went throughout lockdown with 2 year old absolutely fine. Only thing I did was made sure he was in trolley rather than running amok grabbing things - but this is easier for me / other shoppers regardless of covid

Laaalaaaa · 14/08/2020 13:52

I’ve taken my baby in since March - no option but to as my husband was working abroad. It’s not a big deal.

Hurryupbaby11 · 14/08/2020 18:25

We've been and are back - all fine and well stocked up on treats now! Thanks all for your reassurance Smile

Of course it is "seen as OK." If it wasn't then there would be a lot of single parents who wouldn't have been able to go out to buy food.

Don't listen to the lockdown zealots on here. They can be utterly bonkers.

MabelMoo23 · 15/08/2020 07:02

I think the problem was, taking children added to the number of people in a shop whilst social distancing was at its highest and so if you COULD leave your children at home you SHOULD - the emphasis being on could, obviously there are people who simply didn’t have a choice

Now shops certainly aren’t as strict and it’s no problem at all taking children

minnieok · 15/08/2020 07:48

No one is policing the doors now, haven't for a couple of months. Main thing is to keep kids by you - there's tutting every time I bump into the family with 6 kids running around Lidl grabbing and putting stuff back, you can hear the staff audibly sigh, they are notorious (2 parents do why bring 6 unruly kids?)

Waxonwaxoff0 · 15/08/2020 08:04

Even when people were policing the doors they weren't turning people with children away so that makes no difference.

SengaStrawberry · 15/08/2020 12:57

There have been whole families and joined at the hip couples strolling around supermarkets as if it’s some sort of social event since the restrictions started so I wouldn’t think twice in your shoes.

cologne4711 · 15/08/2020 20:44

They're still policing the doors where I am though to be fair I didn't see a queue at the supermarket yesterday when walking past. But I did see a queue outside the British Heart Foundation charity shop! Now what was that about? I have FOMO (or FIMO - fear I missed out).

FluffyKittensinabasket · 15/08/2020 20:48

Are we “allowed” to shop in a couple again now? M&S allows it. DH and I have gone round Waitrose separately before with half of the list each.
