Mask wearing

I know I know, another mask thread!
And I also know that no one here can know for sure, just interested in opinions.
Do you think mask wearing will be extended in this country? Other countries have extended mask rules to things like:
Wearing masks in restaurants while moving around
Wearing masks outdoors
France has recently changed its rule on air travel to require single use surgical masks be worn by passengers, not reusable masks
Masks in schools
Some countries have a lower age exemption than we do

I personally think we might have to wear them moving around restaurants, it's not logical to not have to, given the rest of the rules (not that logic is the word I'd associate with our rules anyway). I also think, if they want any outdoor events to go ahead (I'm thinking things like Christmas markets, large firework displays etc), they may make masks mandatory there. I don't think (although this may just be wishful thinking) that masks will be made mandatory in all outdoor public areas.
Does anyone else think it will be extended?

Yeah I do, and I think it should be in places like restaurants when using the toilets etc.

Bellesavage · 13/08/2020 07:09

The problem of wearing them in toilets is if you touch it, and many people do, you are literally going to breathe bum at people for the next two hours.

hopefulhalf · 13/08/2020 07:13

Well I think shop and resturant workers would be a good start. Just back from Greece where everybody was wearing them, cannot believe the places we are not.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 13/08/2020 07:43

I wouldn't have a problem in restaurants but I hope they don't become compulsory outside in general. I could understand it at things like Christmas markets but I do not want to wear the bloody thing going for a walk!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/08/2020 07:45

No chance would I wear one outside. Understandable at big events or something but I'm not going to wear one just to go for a walk.

DamitJanet · 13/08/2020 08:04

I hope so. I understand many other countries require them when you’re moving around in restaurants/bars, you take them off at your table which I think is reasonable. Most bars I’m aware of are currently table service only so it’s work, and may help lower the impact of those still allowing people to cram in. Outside in crowded places seems sensible too, but not for general walks etc outside where distancing is straightforward.

mum2jakie · 13/08/2020 08:06

Bloody hell. I'm avoiding all indoor places where I have to wear a mask. No way would I wear one outdoors. Absolutely no bloody way!!!

DipSwimSwoosh · 13/08/2020 09:13

No I wouldn't wear one outside either. I'd rather be fined.

runbummyrun · 13/08/2020 09:18

I'm avoiding places I have to wear one. Absolutely no way would I wear one outside or "moving around" I'll take the fine thanks .....

Yet to hear of anyone actually fined Wink

nether · 13/08/2020 09:19

I wouid like to see mask wearing be the norm.

Because one of my household is newly deshielded.

Some people cannot wear masks, but the reasonable adjustment for them is risk of death for us.

So we're pretty much excluded from many indoor things because of lack of mask wearing. I had thought - after all the many threads about his bad isolation is for people - that people would be willing to act in ways that minimise isolation. Unfortunately that does not seem to be the case.

Bellesavage that wouid be quite a good way to learn to keep fingers off. But even if they didn't, it's less risky than absence of mask

nether · 13/08/2020 09:21

Outdoors is ok only if the unmasked keep 2m away

(It's 1m + mitigation, no mitigation than 2m)

Keeping minimum 2m away from strangers shouldn't be too much to ask, should it?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/08/2020 09:21

@nether mask wearing outdoors is a step too far when the risk outside is so minimal.

nether · 13/08/2020 09:29

As long as you are 2m away from people, then that would of course be fine.

If you need/want to get closer to people, then do the right thing.

Because isolation is a kicker, and it's heartbreaking to see so many places we are de facto excluded from. And it's coming on the back of long isolation (stricter than for the general population)

We'll be running the risks of school. But not adding to them by taking risks in other places.

Just stay 2m away (unless masked) and our opportunities are so much wider.

ElizabethWoodviIIe · 13/08/2020 10:47

My local pub insists that you wear a mask if you're not sitting down. Apparently if you're sitting down you're immune. They have a zero tolerance policy which means I can't go there because I can't wear a mask at all - seems a bit discriminatory to me and I'm not sure how lawful it is to deny disabled people service, particularly as their policy isn't backed up by government guidelines.

If mask wearing in all public spaces became mandatory it would mean even more judgment, comments and filthy looks for those of us who are exempt. I can just about put up with it a couple of times a week at the supermarket/on the bus, but it would become intolerable if it happened every time I stepped outside.

BamboozledandBefuddled · 13/08/2020 11:35

If they become mandatory in pubs and restaurants, we'll stop going even if exemption applies. Outside, I won't wear one and if I'm challenged, I will admit that I'm refusing to, rather than being legally exempt. I'm not prepared to be dragged along by hysteria any longer.

Sockwomble · 13/08/2020 15:28

"Outdoors is ok only if the unmasked keep 2m away"

Everyone should keep 2m away. You make sure you stay at least 2m away. My severely disabled son who cannot keep a mask on ( and who by the way has been unable to go to most public places for years) would much prefer that.

yawnsvillex · 13/08/2020 15:42

@BamboozledandBefuddled YES!!! My thoughts exactly. I am the same. I'm just not wearing one.

Call the police 🤷🏼‍♀️ big deal.

I'd love people to stay 2m from me - even 1m would be great - but sadly they don't seem to want to. I've had loads of comments and dirty looks from people because I'm not wearing a mask - even as they reach past me (close enough to brush me with their arm) in the supermarket to get something off a shelf or push past me in the aisles.
BackInTime · 13/08/2020 16:27

I have mixed feelings about masks as I notice mask wearing has made people feel it is ok to get up close to others. Queues and restrictions in shops are being ignored and social distancing is out the window. Having said this it makes no sense that you cannot wander down an empty aisle in a shop for a minute without a mask yet you can be in a busy pub or restaurant for a longer period of contact with others without one. We are also constantly hearing of incidents of cases linked to pubs but very few about shops.

lljkk · 13/08/2020 16:55

Yes I feel confident that mask wearing will be extended.
At some point after that, the mandatory wearing places will be dramatically reduced to just something like public transport hubs/vehicles. "They" will decide it's not that useful after all. (doh) Is my prediction.

I dread when we're told we can't go for a walk in the countryside on without one on, or even put the bins out. Not sure how DC (teens) will cope at school with them on. I presume that will come.

BackInTime · 13/08/2020 18:37

As a measure my teen DD has declined shopping trips (unheard of) because of the necessity to wear a mask which makes her feel hot and light headed. Cannot imagine what school will be like for them if this is a requirement.

Sunflowerlover20 · 13/08/2020 19:09

Footfall is already down in indoor places such as shops because of the face mask situation as people want to be in and out quick so are again only shopping for essentials. Will try and find the link as to where I read this.
If the mask wearing was extended to restaurants this will have the same affect and the 50% off they are currently doing will be also pointless!
We are avoiding all places where a mask is required even though one of us is exempt.

annabel85 · 13/08/2020 19:55

It's not just masks though is it? I've been rushing in and out of the supermarket since March like probably most people rather than taking my time. And I don't want to go clothes shopping at the moment regardless. Masks or no masks i've had no desire to shop at leisure since March.

Some shops might have had a bit of a bounce when they first reopened due to novelty, but a pandemic like this isn't conducive to an indoor shopping environment. People go shopping for essentials and do their browsing online.

HeresMe · 13/08/2020 21:03

They bring mask wearing outdoors in , I will be going to jail, I will refuse everytime as it is just bollocks.

It is a struggle to breath moving about (funnily enough the 'doctors videos are sat at a desk')

We are getting to a point it will go too far.
