Schools going back are you wearing a mask on school runs

I'd just like to know if your planning on wearing a face covering on doing the school runs whem they kids go back in 2/3weeks time. I'm starting to feel incredibly anxious about it all with the latest rise of cases and people not social distancing!!!! Everyone acting like theres nothing wrong in the world!!! We strongly feel that were not out of the safe zone. We've been very much at home and social distancing still with all family and friends . ...

The school my kids go to is small and how they have planned it into 4 smaller groups so that all 250 pupils will go back within 4 x10 min different time slots at drop off and pick up. That will be 62ish kids going in/out with parents all together through one way in and out another I just can't see how this is going to work social distancing mainly with the adults as they all hang around and natter and I'm really getting concerned about it.
Considering whether i should be wearing a face mask.

Kids will be in reception and year 2 (when daughter was in year 1 she went back for the few weeks and it was really good but there was only 8 kids going in at once and so wasn't overcrowded...... please your views???

I won't be only because the school have specifically stated that parents do not hang around after drop off and I definitely won't be hanging around. (I mean you will get some parents nattering but if they have sense they will drop and go)

@EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide

I wear one in shops even if they don't enforce it. But I will not wear I've in the school yard because it seems pointless. For my two dc to go into a class full of 30 children and not wear them or sd, then come home to bring whatever they picked up. If it's in the school yard they're going to get it anyway. If schools do definitely go back full time with no sd then we might as well scrap masks and sd everywhere else. Makes no sense.
Exactly why bother with it if it's not important enough in schools, it is absoultly ridiculous. Especially as they went to all the effort to socially distance before the summer holidays when then infections were falling, now they are climbing again to the same rate when the schools reopened at limited size and it's now okay to have bubbles of 200 Confused its utter madness

well thanks for your responses some make lots of sense some not so much, and yes in our school most of the parents dont know how to social distanceing and have been broadcasting all over social media about baby showers weddings partys sleepovers days out and paly dates theyve all been doing which absolute infuriates me anyway yes its a small school on a busy road and the passageways are very narrow so us all going in at once just doesnt bode well wih me

@ChaBishkoot @BillieEilish

So in your US City and area of Spain do you have to wear masks outdoors all the time or just in crowded town centres?

ChaBishkoot · 12/08/2020 09:14

Everywhere. All the time. You step out, you wear a mask. Everyone above the age of 2. But they are generally less harsh on the youngest kid but DS1 who is nearly 9 will be going to school masked and has been in the playground masked (when playgrounds did reopen) for a while now. We are masked everywhere we go and it has been fine. Very very high compliance here.

For summer camp, we walk to the camp masked- DS2 takes his off after temperature checks and hand washing. DS1 keeps his on. He gets mask free time during the day. Lots of outdoor activities for both. They eat in the classroom, and have their own separate stationery. If anyone in their cohort bubble falls ill, you can get a quick test done at our local children’s hospital or any of the local testing centres. Some have long turnarounds but the children’s hospital has a one day test and the others are all 72 hours for a result.

anothernamereally · 12/08/2020 09:14

Our school have stated that masks must be removed in school grounds Confused

ChaBishkoot · 12/08/2020 09:16

We have met up with friends in parks and had socially distanced picnics in parks where we are masked (but take it off to eat) and we don’t share food. We have been doing that every weekend for a month now.

We are allowed small bubbles or pods. We are in a 3 family bubble. All parents work from home (all 6 work FT) and our kids all go to the same summer camp (and the same schools in the Fall). So this is the group we feel safe hanging about with. But this was introduced maybe 6 weeks ago once the transmission rate fell.

ChaBishkoot · 12/08/2020 09:20

And before summer camp, we hired one person to help out with childcare (plus one parent taking turns) and hosted it in a different person’s house.
Most of the families where we live did similar things.

Part of the logic is that the virus does transmit outdoors, social distancing is not always possible and it’s not good mask hygiene to keep taking it on and off. Wearing masks is for most a low cost/low impact initiative especially in school settings with a high payoff. Our school did a presentation with a bunch of epidemiologists and paediatricians and they said measures must be cumulative. So masks, hand washing and regular testing all together mean we can go back to school. However if for any reason our community transmission rates change in the Fall/Winter they will reconsider (they are pretty low right now).

GabriellaMontez · 12/08/2020 09:24

Outside? Of course not.

Ellsbells12 · 12/08/2020 11:05

No my son is anxious when we wear a mask already looking into some counselling for him due to this so no

AmelieTaylor · 12/08/2020 11:07
@SengaStrawberry I think you woke up on the wrong side of the bed today.
I think it's pushed against the wall on the 'right' side

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 12/08/2020 11:08

No. Drop off is outside the gates, and before lockdown I managed to avoid everyone, and plan on doing the same again.

I'll still wear one inside shops etc, but not outside.

vinoandbrie · 12/08/2020 11:26

No!

eurochick · 12/08/2020 11:57

Almost everyone drops by car at my child's school because of where it is, so no, I won't be wearing a mask. I don't wear one outside at all - just avoid crowded areas.

GoldenOmber · 12/08/2020 12:02

Ours went back today. I did have a mask because I was fairly sure the school’s plans would end up with massive crowds of parents all tightly gathered round the same few gates, and indeed there was.

Fairylightsdreamer · 12/08/2020 14:17

I plan to as my daughter is at a fairly large school with narrow entry points. I’ll be coming into contact with parents of children who aren’t in her bubble so I’ll pop my mask on for the very last part of the school run and remove it once drop off is done and we are off the narrow path.

Aragog · 12/08/2020 15:09

I'm not doing a school run - Dd way too old. But may well be on playground duty in the mornings/evenings to oversee how things are and try to maintain some form of SDing of parents on school grounds, and just outside of them. We aren't asking parents to wear masks for the school runs. I'm not even sure if they have to wear one if they need to come into school for any reason.

However, in those situations where I will he stood with potentially many parents I will wear my mask.

Nicknacky · 12/08/2020 15:14

I’ve just done the school run and only a couple of parents wore masks. I certainly don’t intend to.

Lucindainthesky · 12/08/2020 15:19

Yes I will be. We walk to school and on the approach it gets very busy. Plus they are doing staggered drop offs so there are going to be loads of people hanging around with siblings, I think it's going to be busier than usual.

Carlislemumof4 · 12/08/2020 15:24

Yes I'm going to wear a face covering on all school runs.

We walk the 10 minutes to school along busy pavements and the pavement outside the school gate (where we've to wait, no parents allowed in the yard) is really narrow. Many parents will just be chatting in groups and smoking by the wall as usual. Drop off times are only slightly staggered so will still be busy. School have arranged that by family groups though which I'm relieved about, with 3 DCs there I was worried I could be backwards and forwards through the day or DCs would have to hang around outside the school gate with me waiting for each other.

Two or three school mornings I'll be going shopping straight after dropping DCs off so makes sense to wear a mask and keep it on for the time I'm out of the house.

UndertheCedartree · 12/08/2020 15:50

It depends. Usual school run the 1st 10 min aren't too near anyone then the last 10 min becomes increasingly crushed as we get closer to school. We are going to have 3 starting/finishing times (10 mins apart) but not sure how much difference that will make to a school of over 1000 pupils. Juniors can already go in 10 min ahead of Infants as it is and there are 5 finish times each 5 min apart. So if it is very busy and coming up close to others then my DD and myself will wear our masks as you never know where there may be someone vulnerable. If we can social distance then we won't wear masks.

IncidentsandAccidents · 12/08/2020 17:04

No, it's a small rural primary with staggered drop offs, a socially distanced queuing system and one way exit. I wouldn't mind if we were asked to wear masks but I'm happy with the safety provisions in place.

SomewhereEast · 12/08/2020 18:45

No. I think wearing masks outdoors is completely pointless TBH

Recoverandthrive · 12/08/2020 18:54

I have been thinking about this too. Think I will be.

loulouljh · 12/08/2020 18:56

Definitely not.
