Hair loss

To cut a long story short. I had major emergency surgery and then caught the virus in a ‘clean ward’ ended up in ITU for 2 weeks and in hospital for 5 weeks. Since I got home I started to have some extra hair loss, where it got so severe that huge clumps were just falling out and I am talking massive lumps. My hair was down my back. So I went to the hairdressers had 11 inches cut off hoping that would help. It hasn’t. I have now lost 80% of my hair. Doctor said he could do nothing. It’s been falling out for just over 2 months now and no chance of slowing down. Am using specialist expensive shampoos but they are doing nothing. I feel like a freak, I don’t feel feminine anymore. Any ideas what else to try? I don’t want to do wigs down to itchy head and too hot weather

Could it be a thyroid issue?

Also maybe join the fb group covid 1 in 20 as there are people with long covid who had haie loss

Thank you. I will go and join now. Doctor said there was nothing she could do! I did mention a blood test for possible vitamin deficiency but she said it wasn’t needed!

I haven't heard of this with covid, but a friend had alopecia that responded to steroid treatments. I think you need them early for good results; push for your doctor to recognise this is an auto-immune response and refer you for help.

Nowhere near the same extent as you but I've had noticeable hair loss following COVID. I only had the virus fairly mildly but I read an article where they felt the prolonged raised temp kills the hair follicle. Afraid no ideas to help other than wigs or embrace and go for a complete shave. With make up and good bone structure it can look beautiful. The article I read did give hope of recovery but it takes time - 6-9 months. Wishing you all the best
