We were in our garden and over the fence heard the visitors in our neighbours garden say to our neighbours they only had 1 week of quarantine left but they were sure they didn’t have covid because they had been monitoring their temperature everyday and it hadn’t changed. It turns out the husband works with a confirmed case and had been contacted by track and trace because someone he works with has coronavirus. But it’s fine to visit neighbours because they were outside. My shielding 4 year old DD was also outside in our garden (both not very big/ far apart) and now I am really worried. Sorry for difficulties posting. My phone is rubbish.

How high is the fence?

ArthurMorgan · 08/08/2020 15:59

That's pretty ridiculous that they went to some ones garden when he works with someone who has a known case of covid...

I'm sure your 4 year old will be fine though, I know it's a real concern especially when some one is shielding but the likelihood of catching it from some one else in some one else's garden is extremely slim. Flowers

Your daughter will be fine but your neighbour is a dick.

Ours is a postman and it has been reported that there was an outbreak at our local depot. Both he and his wife have been coughing loads but she was still stood outside chatting to someone on her doorstep yesterday...coughing.

HairyLairy · 08/08/2020 15:59

About waist height.

Spam88 · 08/08/2020 16:02

I'm sure your 4 yo will be fine, if proximity to the garden hasn't bothered you before I'm not sure why it would now. There's a fence between them so it's not like anyone can cough in her face.

HairyLairy · 08/08/2020 16:03

I just feel like DD can’t even be in the garden without being put at risk. I have made DC come inside because I’m rubbish at judging distances & can’t be sure DD was 2 meters away.

OP posts:
Spam88 · 08/08/2020 16:05

Sorry cross post. If you don't have a full height fence then you should put something 2m from your fence that your DD isn't allowed to pass. And undoubtedly your neighbours are idiots. But please try not to worry, the risk is so low outside anyway and presumably anyone within 2m of her was facing away into your neighbours garden.

HairyLairy · 08/08/2020 16:07

I guess the familiarity of being at home makes things feel safer than they are. DD has had a tough time of it and this coronavirus is really the last thing she needs. Her consultants have told us to be especially careful because of the risk to her. And I dropped the ball massively because our own garden felt safe.
OP posts:
Spam88 · 08/08/2020 16:11

You haven't dropped the ball at all OP. It's extremely unlikely she's been face to face with someone in your neighbours garden at less than 2m.

Keepdistance · 08/08/2020 16:12

I know what you mean. Some bastard has been hanging ariund our corner coughing. It's pretty gross in normal times.

vodkaredbullgirl · 08/08/2020 16:13

She should be fine outside, was she talking to them, were they close to her?

HairyLairy · 08/08/2020 16:16

I’m crazy enough to have measured the closest distance she was sat on a garden chair to our neighbours fence. It is just over 1m. I don’t know if that’s made me feel better or worse. I assume they would have been around that far away from their own fence.

OP posts:
vodkaredbullgirl · 08/08/2020 16:19

Sorry to ask but do you suffer from anxiety?

HairyLairy · 08/08/2020 16:19

@vodkaredbullgirl

She should be fine outside, was she talking to them, were they close to her?
She talked to neighbour very briefly to show her a doll while she was sat about 1m from fence. Only for about 15 seconds if that. I think the risk will be low. It just shook me.
OP posts:
LIZS · 08/08/2020 16:21

Facing or not? Transmission at that distance outside from someone with no symptoms is very very low. Yes y ndn and friends are behaving irresponsibly but don't take it to extremes. Do you or your dh go shopping now?

HairyLairy · 08/08/2020 16:21

@vodkaredbullgirl no not normally. When I’ve been told my daughter who has already nearly died might die if she catches it, then probably yes.

OP posts:
HairyLairy · 08/08/2020 16:23

@LIZS they were facing each other. Neighbour was also a little way back from fence so hoping that created 1.5/2 meters.

OP posts:
Lucindainthesky · 08/08/2020 16:28

I think your anxiety is understandable seeings as your DD is vulnerable. I myself feel very anxious about catching it as DH is vulnerable so I get it.

But please try to remember that all the evidence suggests that the chance of transmission outdoors is extremely low. It's recycled air indoors with lots of people that causes problems.

Even if they did have covid (and it's not a given that they do) the chances of her catching it in that scenario are very low indeed Flowers
