East vs West covid

I'm genuinely curious as to why the death rate is much higher in the western countries as opposed to eastern countries.

While Italy has a high elderly population, so does japan. Yet, the vast difference in death count is mind blowing.

Anyone care to discuss? And what can we learn from the East? I dislike the death rate here, and want to adopt some measures for myself and loved ones from the East in case we see a another pandemic.

I don't mean that go read that the refugees aren't important by the way! Just that out in the community spread is still very low, though on the rise mainly in younger people- the news just said 54% of new cases yesterday were under 25 and asymptomatic.

@Worriedmum999

I’ve been utterly ashamed to be British throughout this to be honest, both because of the useless government and of the attitude of the ‘great’ british public. The vast majority are entirely selfish, thinking only of their own discomfort in wearing a mask and moaning about not being able to go on holiday for one year of their life. People saying they won’t get vaccinated. People celebrated in the streets when the polio vaccination with discovered!

Let’s just hope that if we ever have another world war then everyone is just wiped out with an atomic bomb as this snowflake, spoiled generation wouldn’t cope. Pathetic

Wow, you must know some wierd people. All the British people I know have been quietly getting on with things, and not whinging at all. Your last sentence makes you sound a right nasty person though, wishing mass death on 65 million people.

There are very hefty fines often imposed for breaking the isolation/quarantine rules in Taiwan, PRC, SK, HK, Singapore, NZ... etc. I don't support those rules not least because it's rule by fear -- it's not altruism that keeps people in line, anyway.

Really? - I live in NZ and there is no fear here among the general populace, and most people support the rules. We look at the UK and their half-hearted measures in wonderment and dismay.

We didn't get bulletins like this in UK. I find it scary. What's the point of going on about penalties & breach counts unless you want to scare people. Ardern implored Kiwis to report breaches. What a lovely (not) snitching culture.

In somewhat unrelated news- I had a friend who I speak to once a month send me a nasty text for wearing and promoting masks bc "all these masks are polluting the planet".

It left me shaking and I cried for two min, and then regained my composure.

I won't know what the right thing to do honestly, but wearing a mask and washing my hands seems to be a good for our family to navigate covid. End of.

Some may feel different and I wish them well.

Excuse me, but I have seen the numerous posts on MN about people asking if they should report others for every little transgression!!! We have a different attitude in NZ, the majority of people agreed with the governments response (over 85%), the opinion polls regarding the upcoming elections show Labour racing ahead of the other parties, and we are happy to now be going about our daily lives pretty much as usual. If you are happy with the UK's response then good for you - we preferred our teamwork approach.

pancakeloverrr · 09/08/2020 02:59

@eaglejulesk

I have also seen countless posts in Mumsnet wanting to report citizens, neighbours, etc for breaking gov. Protocol.

It's delusional to say the UK people are not being hounded by vigilantes.

We all think we are all so different but when pigs comes to shove, not so much.

@pancakeloverrr - not to mention the posts from people who have been yelled at for daring to walk too close to someone (which I have never heard of in NZ by the way). Yep, people really aren't much different, wherever they live.
