How safe do you think hotels like Premier Inn are? Is their air conditioning safe?

We'd love to go away for a few nights before the end of the school holidays but not sure what's safe (and affordable).
We have used Premier Inn in the past but are wary because many of them don't have windows that open and we have no idea whether the air conditioning removes the virus or actually helps to spread it.
Any advice?
Thanks

Their website says they've implemented safety measures.
I'd only be wary of bumping into mask refuseniks tbh.
I love a couple of nights at a PI!

I'm currently in a premier inn hub in london. All very safe with one way systems and not busy anyway. Air con is working which is bliss in this weather!

ChavvySexPond · 08/08/2020 01:03

I don't know enough about air conditioning to know what makes it safe but this us about the 5th thing I've read where the Covid spread was linked to the air conditioning and we won't go anywhere that you can't throw the windows wide open.

I've stayed in several Premier Inns and often the windows do open, albeit just a small way.

Air con in general concerns me though. Not just in hotels, but in offices and other buildings, especially where the windows cannot be opened. I am on furlough currently but will probably be asked to return to work next month, in just such an office. I have already raised this issue and been told that the air is refreshed/replaced regularly, but it worries me.

I do like Premier Inn though, and have often found that the windows do open, although

My last sentence should read "I do like Premier Inn, although I'd be concerned about staying in any hotel at the moment, especially if the windows don't open."

Bewaretheair · 08/08/2020 02:06

No the air conditioning isn’t safe a big scary monster is going to come out and gobble you all up. In your sleep.

This is good to hear, my DS has been asked to attend a training course a 4 hours drive away in Greater Manchester, his team normally all travel up from various locations and share a flat for the week and he questioned whether this was still happening, due to the virus. His Manager has advised its the same as normal. My DS has decided to instead book a hotel so he can SD in some form, but was worrying about how safe hotels would be, Premier Inn is one he was looking into.

Just spent a few days in a premier inn in London, can’t comment on the safety of the air con but hotel in general felt safe. Only one family per lift, extra cleaning. They’ve put minimal pillows, towels etc in room, you can ask for more. New shower curtain with each stay too.

London was so quiet too, it was a lovely time to visit the sights!

Hotel air conditioning consists of a cooling unit inside the rooms which simply recirculates air within the room.
If the windows don't open there will also be a fresh air supply from a central air conditioning system which will be a single pass all fresh air system.
So hotel air conditioning is probably the safest.
Compared to an office or public building where a large volume of air is typically recirculated around the building.

megletthesecond · 08/08/2020 07:30

@Defenbaker yy, the air con at work worries me. I'm probably only in 1 day a week from the autmnn so I really hope the air con isn't on then.

AnnaMagnani · 08/08/2020 07:31

Have stayed in a Premier Inn every week through out lockdown - am keyworker. The air con is just a wall unit in each room that recirculates the air in the room. And half the windows don't open anyway Bitter

Air conditioning is bliss! I love my Premier Inn and am v sad when it's fully booked.

TinySongstress · 08/08/2020 07:35

Just call the PI in question and ask the receptionist. They'll be happy to help.

TheGreatWave · 08/08/2020 08:21

We stopped the other week, it was fine. It is an older one without air con though. Staff were great and one way systems etc in place.

Defenbaker · 08/08/2020 13:18

@beautifulmonument Thanks for that info. It makes me feel reassured about hotel rooms, but more anxious about the air con in our office. Swings and roundabouts. Smile

BiBabbles · 08/08/2020 13:33

beautifulmonument as explained it well. With windows, as previous said, you'd need to call the individual hotel.

I know people who work for Premier Inn, they've put in a lot of safety measures & many work hard to maintain them (what people do to barriers is weird, I know some have already had to be replaced) so while I don't really have reason to stay in one any time soon, I'd have no safety concerns about it. All the ones I know which previously served food with either their own or an adjoining restaurant aren't at this time so that may be an extra consideration for trip planning.

HeadAndShoulders · 09/08/2020 12:34

I phoned up one premier Inn that I was interested in which didn't have air conditioning. I was told that the windows opened but only a few inches due to health and safety.

I stayed in one about this time last year like that - no air con and windows only opening a fraction - it was hot. I'd be more worried about that than catching covid.
