Who cares about SD at the beach...

... When there will be no SD at school. I live near the sea, fb had been full of apoplectic residents who are incensed by the lack of SD (from what I saw I blame the wide lense media photographers. Whilst some places were packed by far the majority were keeping their distance)

I've started arguing my point (I was interviewed for the local news, not seen if I've made the cut yet) and the majority have no idea that schools won't be SD. So think before you judge those on the beach. It may suit the MSM narrative but not reality.

I agree that being outside greatly reduces transmission. The problem with the huge crowds is what they do on the way to and from the beach. Shops, cafes, loos, supermarkets will be much busier than normal in these areas.

Except that people have been saying this for 2 months now and there's no evidence that any of those things caused any increase.

Cornwall (pop. approx 550,000) has a lot of beaches

They've been quite busy for a while

In the seven days up to 4 August the number of new cases of coronavirus was 13.

CHILL OUT!!!

@mrshoho

Swarming in the parks descending on the parks I think I've seen flocking to the parks too
Swarming! I guess like flocking and droves it reduces humans to animals, implying we are brainless followers (I do not think this about animals BTW)

Tbf I amble everywhere these days. Lockdown has taken all the energy out of me. When I take my kids to the park it's definitely an amble. And round where I live there's more of a trickle of shoppers than a flood. It's all terribly civilised unless you try to go to Tesco's

Morfin · 08/08/2020 16:07

I'm a little bit disappointed Jade I had hoped you'd skate.

Having just come back from on holiday near one of the reported "full" beaches, I don't think it's actually on the beach that people are concerned about.
I totally agree that the pictures look worse than the reality.

Walking around there were hardly anyone wearing masks including inside shops-dh heard one shop keeper ask someone to put one on, and the person just said "no" and pushed past him.
The people were on top of each other queueing to pay for parking, at the ice cream stalls, washing their feet at the foot shower, going to complain to the lifeguard that they'd moved the flag in front of their tent...

We didn't go to the busy beach except late evening and one of the quieter days but you could see how the locals were feeling at the stalls. They're stuck because the tourists pay their wages, but very few tourist were attempting social distancing even when asked to step back/put masks on.
I think a lot of people think they can't possibly catch it/pass it on if they're on holiday.
I wonder how many of them wear masks and think about SD when they're back home.

We were in Cornwall a couple of weeks ago and were really impressed by both the way businesses were carrying on whilst implementing the regs and also how the majority of public were being really quite sensible at maintaining distance etc...we’ve arrived on the Welsh Coast today and are totally 😲 at how things are playing out - there is really no social distancing in the shops, on the pavements, in queues...the beach was ok but we only went in the evening so guessing many had left...and they don’t have regs re masks (apart from public transport) so it’s really business as usual...and they were the ones wanting to keep us out🤷🏼‍♀️

BlackeyedSusan · 08/08/2020 23:40

Social distancing here was almost non existent this morning. Certainly less than 2m. We left. Went back later. Groups partying. But Good social distancing and mask wearing In the shop.

LastTrainEast · 08/08/2020 23:56

OP it's the same dumb argument we've been hearing since this began.

School is essential and the beach is not.

Early on we had "why can we go to work and not the the pub. Why is work safer" lol people really did say that.

TheGardenFairy · 09/08/2020 00:06

My house overlooks the beach. I can’t wait for the rain to come in over the weekend so I can walk my dog on the beach in peace. As usual I’ll take my recycling bags to clean up the plastic shit and stinking nappies that our fair weathered friends leave behind!

ChristmasCarcass · 09/08/2020 01:05

The Evening Standard definitely had people flocking to London parks. In droves.

In reality, there were a couple of hundred people dispersed over 50 hectares. Plenty of room, not remotely irresponsible behaviour. Sticking to the guidelines. Mostly young black teens and families though, hence the pearl-clutching.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 09/08/2020 01:21

My teens will be going back in Sept.
This bit just isn't true though, if the letters and updates we've had are anything to go by
and the majority have no idea that schools won't be SD. So think before you judge those on the beach. It may suit the MSM narrative but not reality
The update said lessons and year groups would be staggered to presumably avoid unnecessary mixing.
One way system put in place too, can't just go round altogether like you used to.
