To those who believe visors are a solution for those who can't wear masks

...and who pop up on every thread on face mask exemptions to suggest them.

Nicola Sturgeon has just announced that from Saturday, visors cannot be worn alone in public places where face coverings are required and must be worn in addition to another face covering, as the Scottish government don't believe they offer suitable protection.

UK government guidelines currently state that a close fitting cloth covering is to be worn - no mention of visors.

There's also the fact that many who are exempt can't wear them anyway!

Its obvious that visors do little. The gaping gap is a giveaway. They are good in conjunction with a mask and good for HCPs who might get covered in body fluids.

summersolstice43 · 07/08/2020 14:19

I work for the NHS and we only wear the visors if we are carrying out an aerosol generated procedure to stop fluid going into our eyes, that is all they are suitable for.

Face shields did not protect people from the coronavirus in an outbreak in Switzerland, but masks did, health officials say

I would've thought those gaps would actually be more of an issue if you coughed or sneezed - if you're not wearing a visor you can at least cover your nose/mouth. In a visor you can't, and the aerosol will just jet out of the bottom and sides surely.

This seems so obvious, yet on every thread where people give valid reasons for being exempt visors are always mentioned as a legitimate alternative. I suppose you can't touch your face, which is something, but in terms of protecting others they're not much use.

And impossible to pop on and off/transport between shops, too!

I wonder if this will affect hairdressers.

Mind just wore a visor and I wasn't too happy about it. I would like to think that when I go back she might wear a mask instead or both for preference.

CarlaH · 07/08/2020 15:16

Doh - mine not mind.

I wondered this too - find the 'just need a visor' thing really odd.

Ach Sturgeon just loves to ban things

givemushypeasachance · 07/08/2020 15:22

I've always been baffled by people just wearing a visor and no mask - I thought it was established ages ago that like summersolstice43 said it's to prevent droplets being coughed or otherwise spread across your face and eyes when you're up close to someone. It doesn't stop your droplets coming out around the sides. It's an additional layer of protection, not an alternative.

SleepingStandingUp · 07/08/2020 15:27

Nah, I had contemplated getting one for the 5 to buy want really sure it's so much good.

I'm more confused by people wearing masks into a ship, then taking them off and dangling them around till the next so where they put them on again

summersolstice43 · 07/08/2020 15:27

@givemushypeasachance That's exactly right. Visors are only worn with masks as an additional piece of protective PPE not in stead of.

mrsknottschicken · 07/08/2020 15:28

I went to a hairdresser earlier in the week and they were really hot on hygiene. They said that the guidelines are for hairdressers just to wear visors but they were all wearing masks as well as they didn't believe visors protected the client.

ThisCharmingPenisHaver · 07/08/2020 16:47

I've wondered about hairdressers wearing them with no mask, too - surely their exhalations are just propelled down from under the visor, straight onto the client's head/face? I've not been to one myself but in all the salons I pass, the hairdressers are wearing only visors.

I just hope that the Scottish government acknowledging that they're probably pretty much useless will stop people endlessly suggesting them to those of us who are exempt!

Worse still, I have seen pub staff serving food wearing just visors, as for the kitchen staff, who knows.
