Anyone risking heading to France in the near future?

Just that really.... we are booked to sail this Sunday.

Before anyone vilifies me for even considering going away during a pandemic, we are visiting my inlaws who live in a very low risk region of France. We havent seem them since Christmas, they are both late 70s and my husband feels we should go over and check up on them / spend a week with them. We've had the ferry booked since January, but I guess can shift it (to when, I don't know!) / suck it up and take the monetary hit.

What is everyone elses thoughts re: France being added to the list? I've read way too much in the media / am feeling too emotional about it to make a decent judgement today....

Yes those figures aren’t greatSad. Are their figures normally particularly high on a Monday?

Humphriescushion · 07/08/2020 21:10

Last monday and maybe the monday before the figures were low @ zippy but seems to be monday thing. I check the totals to get figures over the weekend usually to get more of an idea. Will see if i can find the rate per 100,000. It was 22 per 100,000

Morning all

Just to say that we cancelled our trip last night (bumped our ferry bookings all the way to next Easter) after the BBC reported that France cases had increase by 40% in 24 hours (from 1600 to 2288). No idea if is the right thing to do, but I actually feel relief that we aren't second guessing / scouring the internet for news every half an hour

Everyone upset, particularly DH about not seeing his parents, but we have facetimed them (thank god for that!) and will hope to go next Easter at the very latest but i'm hopefully sooner once this blip has calmed down.

Good luck to everyone else deciding what to do - we may well have jumped the gun too early and all will be fine, but I know i just couldn't have coped with a 2 week quarantine on return if it came to it (obvs may well have to do that in a UK local lockdown at some point but fingers crossed that won't happen as our cases do seem to be fairly stable at the moment). Thanks for all the thoughts & advice on this thread.

Perhaps dh's parents can come and visit you in the autumn or over christmas op?
If the second wave has arrived early in France, there might be a window in the October half term to visit then? The weather is very nice in the autumn, especially in the south, we have been many times before.

It seems safer to me that you don't go, both by risking infecting dh's parents accidentally, or becoming ill yourself whilst there as the numbers are going up very quickly. I can't see the figures going down.

We are considering moving our holiday again to the autumn half term or even perhaps next spring. I wake up with dread in my stomach at the thought of going, so it isn't ideal this year Sad

I think it is more likely that the first wave is reaching some places In France not affected at Easter. Whilst an increase in numbers of cases is worrying they currently seem no where near March levels and should not grow exponentially if people are mask wearing and social distancing. There is a lot of scare mongering in the press and its hard to find objective information for decisions on upcoming holidays.

Friendsoftheearth · 08/08/2020 07:54

There will be millions and millions of people in every corner of France that have not caught covid to now. I don't think socially distancing really works if you take your mask off to kiss a friend!

We are in France now in the yarn et Garonne region. An north of Toulouse. Middle of no where. In the markets, cafes and restaurants staff wear masks. If not eating or drinking all the people are wearing masks.
In the local markets mask wearing is compulsory.
Tables are set apart in the cafes and restaurants.

Everyone is being good and the region is listed as green on the French government website.

The sun is shining. The MiL's pool and garden are glorious. I'm glad we came. It's been great to have a change in scene and to enjoy swimming in the sunshine and have a few meals out.

Will be irritating if France is taken off the UK air corridor list but we have planned the trip so the kids have 2 weeks clear before school starts when we get back. Will still be a pain if we have to quarantine but it is what it is.

@MindfulBear sounds gorgeous! Enjoy your trip, ours would have been similar but in Normandy. We're wondering whether half term might be an option.... will wait and see and literally book it the day before we went if possible

We have postponed to October, really hoping things are better - if not we will switch to next summer, tired but happy we have made the right decision.

Friendsoftheearth · 08/08/2020 10:06

There is also a heatwave here for another week, so it seems pointless going all that way with the risk when we can go to gorgeous beaches here! Have a good weekend op, you can relax now Wine

Friends are there now. Remote area, low levels and they have a house out there. Quite likely they'll need to quarantine tho
