Sore throat since beginning of May

Just curious to know whether anyone has had a sore throat for months and whether it was due to COVID? The doctor has said so many different things at this point (without actually being face to face to have a look) and I'm just wondering whether this is something that happens after you've had the virus? Tested negative twice back in May but had the sore throat for about 10 days before the first test.

I've had a COVID throat since March. What makes it different to an ordinary sore throat is that it comes and goes- so usually hurts for an hour or two each evening (I get an uptick in other symptoms then too) then disappears like magic. It also feels like the pain is inside somehow, not on the surface.

Porcupineinwaiting · 06/08/2020 23:48

That's how it manifests for me anyway, may be totally different for you.

Was it really painful to start. Was it the glands up? Glandular fever?

DottyDuvet · 07/08/2020 05:17

Glandular fever was one of the things they said it could be but had a full blood count and nothing was pulled up. They also said anxiety, reflux, tonsillitis. But it just seems odd that this has been going on for 3.5 months and I've seen another thread on the Internet of other people saying the same, so I'm just curious whether anyone who has had something like this had it as the after effects of covid.

Could it be hay fever? Mine gives me a sore throat which comes and goes, every summer.

Bowednotbroken · 07/08/2020 07:30

I've had a sore throat for months too - glands swollen as well. Not had any COVID symptoms otherwise and I was shielding for at least 3 months (asthmatic). I'd be really interested in any theories as I've not been to the doc about this.

I’ve had a sore throat since March. Not bad but just there. Had a couple of tests through the Zoe app but negative.

Tangledyarn · 07/08/2020 07:41

I've had a sore throat since march when I had covid, intermittently also keep losing my voice, also still have some breathlessness and chest pain.

Me! I can't go one week without developing a sore throat. It's been less than a week and I've got one.. Again! I've been tested for covid every week for a month and a half and each time, tests come back negative. I am prone to allergies, I have hayfever and I don't have any tonsils or adenoids so I'm not sure if that plays a part in it.

I had this for a month or so around the start of lockdown and was a bit nervous about it, but it suddenly disappeared. Same with my dad (he doesn't live with us) but for him it lasted until much more recently. Sorry they haven't been able to get to the bottom of it for you yet. You say the doctor hasn't been able to take a look - has (s)he seen some photos? I managed to take some quite good ones on my phone.

I contacted the surgery about my ongoing throat infection and swollen glands - it developed I think from hayfever itchy palate in June and I’d been trying to control it with salt gargles and neti pot. I was also having extreme night sweats but no temperature. I wondered if it was linked to a dry cough (triggered by draughts) and night sweats I had back in February. They did blood tests and found nothing particular - doctor (by phone) guessed hayfever and recommended Beconase + antihistamine pills. It’s been a lot better since; glands still slightly up. I won’t know till pollen finishes. Doctor said the Feb thing may or may not have been covid. I saw on another thread the people having night sweats and sore throat tested negative for covid.

TheDrsDocMartens · 07/08/2020 12:41

I take antihistamines on prescription daily and then top up with over the counter ones on bad days. Hay fever shouldn’t have affected my throat this long.

Barbie222 · 07/08/2020 12:42

I have had this, but test was negative. I wonder if it's an after effect as I'm pretty sure I had covid very early on, behind widespread testing.

Bodoni · 07/08/2020 13:58

Dr Hilary Jones was telling news outlets back in June that hayfever was particularly bad this year (because of the long dry spell) and that is my family’s experience too. Not saying my or anyone else’s sore throat is hay fever but it’s possible hay fever has combined with leftovers from an earlier poss covid infection to produce all these sore throats this summer? I find keeping bacteria down with salt gargles and nose rinses helps a lot. (As is also recommended for covid symptoms.)

3hoursofPeppa · 07/08/2020 14:03

I've had a sore throat on and off since March as well. Could be hayfever as I do get that sometimes but I've not got watery eyes/nose or sneezing.

I had a bad cough and tight chest in March but never had a fever so never really thought it was Covid.

I do think it's a bit odd but don't know what to make of it really. I sometimes find I have a sore throat when low carbing, so I kind of think it could be anything really.
