Dreading the cold and flu season

Northernsoulgirl45 · 06/08/2020 08:39

It happened last night. I had a sore throat. Today I have a blocked up nose and I have been Sneezing. Clearly I have a cold but dreading taking myself to work as I fear I will be judged.
Anyone else feel this way or just me?

Obviously also dreading it because flu can be a serious illness and can put added pressure on NHS and kill etc etc.

hmm, i would dread it because i and many others would be worried about the symptoms

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 06/08/2020 08:41

and agree about the judging.
keep hygienic

Northernsoulgirl45 · 06/08/2020 08:50

I am now wondering if I should go to work at all.
This is so hard. At least I work outside and can sd and have hand gel and gloves etc.

I ferl it is definitely a cold as it has developed in a text book cold manner for me but of course others don't know this.

it is a worry, about how work will respond.
can you take time off
will you be penalised
where i work there is no penalty for taking time off if you think you have the virus,
but again, how often can that occur

buenavistabelle · 06/08/2020 09:01

If everyone keeps to hygiene measures, social distancing, masks etc then surely less people will be contracting colds/flu? One would hope....

Northernsoulgirl45 · 06/08/2020 09:16

Part time Self employed so if I don't work I dint get paid. Decided to postpone job.

Get a Covid test. I have a feeling with two kids at different schools and DH in an office we are going to know our drive in testing centre staff by first names at the end of this winter season!

Nextity · 06/08/2020 09:39

I would suggest getting a test. Lots of people who have had covid have had it like a normal cold. But you shouldn't be going anywhere while you are symptomatic from anything at the moment. Passing on bugs in these times is really selfish and could cause far more disruption for the next person. I know it is a real pain - I am dreading this winter!

BanningTheWordNaice · 06/08/2020 09:41

In your case I understand but honestly in February my whole office who could easily work from home were sick constantly with peoples “just a cold” so I hope this makes people keep their colds to themselves.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 06/08/2020 09:55

i dont think work will take too kindly to people taking time off for a cold.

HoneyBee03 · 06/08/2020 11:38

We've had people sent home from the office this week because they just had a blocked nose, and they weren't allowed back until they got a negative test. It feels a bit extreme and it's made me worry about the winter.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 06/08/2020 15:07

Going to get a test.

I think the culture will have to change. If you have a cold and can WFH you stay at home. For jobs where you have to be there, eg retail, they'll have to take a view.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 06/08/2020 15:23

i agree @cologne4711
but i doubt the culture will change

SmileTolerantly · 06/08/2020 16:38

I think by the winter we’ll all be in a well-oiled cough-test-results-back to work routine, and results will be even quicker.

Northernsoullover · 06/08/2020 16:42

I don't think we are in a position to self diagnose colds any more. It probably is a cold. I'm not prone to hysteria. However Covid-19 isn't really following a one size fits all. If I suspect a cold in the autumn I will definitely get a test.

DarkMintChocolate · 06/08/2020 16:42

Two weeks ago, DD got a headache and sore throat; then I got a sore throat and aches all over. We all went for a Covid 19 test - which came back negative. I have no idea how we caught it!

actiongirl1978 · 06/08/2020 16:50

OP let us know the result please?

actiongirl1978 · 06/08/2020 16:50

When you get it.

IwishIhadaMargarita · 06/08/2020 17:15

I’ve booked a flu jab via boots. I haven’t had flu for years but the thought of my immune system being floored by flu and I’ll be travelling back and forth for work is a major risk of Covid striking.

caught what @DarkMintChocolate?
DarkMintChocolate · 06/08/2020 17:53

CrowdedHouse

I felt at the time, I had mild flu - the exact same aching all over feeling; it lasted 2 days and then I felt washed out for another 2 days. It was by no means as bad as full blown flu; which makes me exhausted for 6 weeks not 2 days!

DD and I both get flu jabs, so I can only assume it was either mild flu, as we had had the jabs; or it was a flu type virus? It certainly wasn’t a cold.

cologne4711 · 06/08/2020 17:56

Did you mean to say positive?

Or do you mean you have no idea how you caught whatever it was you had?

SmileTolerantly · 06/08/2020 18:11

Just because you had one negative test doesn’t mean you didn’t have Covid 19 of course DarkMilk. It’s less likely if you didn’t have any known contacts but very much a possibility.

FizzyPink · 06/08/2020 18:13

This is partly why we’ve cancelled our December holiday already. If we’re still in this position of having temperature checks and having to isolate with any symptoms what happens if you literally just have a cold which obviously happens quite a lot in winter
