More enforcement needed in pubs etc

Many pubs/restaurants/hairdressers etc seem to be diligently following good practice concerning infection control, yet I consistently read of those that aren’t. It seems it’s far too easy for businesses to get away with bad practice and potentially contribute to ruining it for everyone. For the sake of those businesses that are operating by the rules (and all the rest of us), more effort is needed to close down those that aren’t.

More well-publicised temporary closures would concentrate minds.... but I’m not sure the Police/Trading Standards/HSE have the resources or interest to do this except in extreme cases.

Businesses are doing what they think their customers want.

If people vote with their feet, and frequent businesses with good distancing, then more places will have good standards and the norm will be reinforced.

Just like the most vulnerable had to forego elements of 'normal' life, through no fault of their own just a bodily issue; those who cannot comply with a mitigation will because of a bodily issue will need to forego elements too (essential services would need to remain available but discretionary ones wouid not)

It's shit that pandemic control takes away freedoms based on previous health, but that's a been a feature of the pandemic all along.

I don’t think this is enough. In the same way there are a few businesses that don’t give a shit, there are quite a lot of people who don’t give a shit either.... Enabling them to combine forces and act as sources for community virus transmission in their non-socially distanced dens will ruin it for the majority of businesses and people that are abiding by guidelines/rules.

It's quite clear from photos of people queuing ( not distanced queuing ) outside pubs in various towns that it's not just a few businesses at fault. Or that businesses need to step up and police the queues as welll

The total lack of enforcement across the board from self isolation , quantentine , makes, distancing, all makes a joke of the whole thing because so many people don't want to do it and see no reason as they are unlikely to be hurt

The problem is that the measures aren’t compulsory. Pubs are only required to provide a signing in book at the door. They aren’t required to make people sign it, or to have a staff member on duty taking names, and people aren’t required to sign the book. So what happens is the book just gets dumped next to the door and ignored.

I walked past our local Spoons yesterday. People were queuing out the door, no social distancing to speak of. The smokers are still huddled together by the front entrance (I watched them all sharing the same lighter).

A friend who works in one of their places in a different part of the country is dreading going back, as it's hard enough to get people to do things when they're sober; they know it's a hopeless endeavour when they're drunk.

The government told the police and local councils to encourage and NOT to enforce right from the beginning.
