Private-ish swimming lesson: would you?

DS has been offered a 1:2 swimming lesson at a gym with one other child in his class. Technically they’re meant to be private 1:1 lessons but can be 1:2 if kids are from the same family or bubble. These kids aren’t in the same bubble, and we have been socialising separately, but they are in the same class. There will be nobody else in the pool room apart from the 2 kids, teacher and both parents. Would you go?

Our swimming lessons have restarted. It’s within the rules - there are guidelines for social distancing in the pool and outside the pool and restrictions on having a shower.
We’re in England - where are you?

Thanks - we are in England too. I don’t think it’s breaking any rules but I had a bit of a wobble after recent news of cases rising etc.

Have you looked at the research done by the swimming body? Our swim school has sent quite a bit out and they say the virus is killed in the chlorinated water. I’d assume they’d not be sharing equipment.
The risk could be outside the pool. My son is basically coming swim ready and is putting on a poncho type towel, some sliders and leaving the pool to get showered and changed at home.
When we went last week it felt safe.

Our teen 14, is resuming Swimming Club lessons next Tuesday. Chlorine kills off virus. He will go with kit on and dressing gown. He will come home same. He will take own float and pull bout. All kids put hand sanitizer on hands as they enter building. He will be going back twice a week as he has put on a few pounds over lock down.

Mine have their first swimming lessons today and I keep wobbling! My main issue is their lessons are back to back so the youngest will come out and sister goes in 15 mins later. What do I do with youngest? Not enough time to go home and I would rather not use changing room. I'm toying with putting her in a dressing gown and getting her changed in car.

I'm not concerned too much about the virus as such. I see it that it's safer now than autumn. I'm thinking we may cancel the lessons after the summer which is so sad and I feel really bad for the leisure centre. But dd and I are clinically vulnerable.

Children don't need to be in a bubble for swimming lessons.
I had 4 in a class yesterday, they didn't know each other. I had measures in place to ensure that they (and I) stayed 2m a part at all times.
They came pool ready (swim stuff under tracksuit / onsie) so quick strip in the changing rooms. Towel dry and dressed after (shower at home) changing cubicles then cleaned down before next group came in.

Ours went back at weekend, they are stage 6 so can lane swim at a distance ours in same class so they were put in a lane together max 2 in a lane, costumes on under dressing gown before they went in, no adult spectators, no changing rooms, one-way system in and out of leisure centre, towels and dressing gowns at the ready on departure. All seemed as safe as could be. Not worried at all but have said if this is still going on by the time they complete stage 7 we will suspend their swimming lessons then.

We usually swim whilst they do but that's not allowed at the moment but that is not a reason for them not to swim.

Thanks for the replies. Turned out it was an absolute nightmare: it was sold as being a private lesson, with just the 2 kids in the pool, and the teacher on the poolside (both kids are able to swim and don't need assistance in the water)...but instead there were the 2 kids, a teacher (not the one we were expecting) in the water with them, then 2 babies with their mums and another teacher, all in the water and all in a very small pool. I was really cross about it.

I'm pretty sure the guidance on teachers being in the water was clear - you don't do it.

Hippocampe · 06/08/2020 16:06

Our swim lessons have resumed and the teachers are definitely all in the pool alongside the kids... They've reduced the class sizes to 5 max to a class, and there were 3 or 4 different lessons in seperate areas of the pool at once. Kids turn up already showered and swim ready, parents stay outside (I wait in car) and kids leave the building straight away in dressing gowns once out the pool... Might be trickier come winter time though... I was quite happy with the set up, like pp said, the chlorine actively kills the virus, and the kids are only there half an hour... Seems far far safer than 30 kids wedged into enclosed classrooms in September, which is the reality, and unavoidable for most.

My son's swimming lessons have resumed and they claim the guidance is no teachers in the pool, even for the little ones.

chuffincold · 08/08/2020 23:33

Both Swim England and Swim teachers Association have stated that teachers should teach from the poolside. Both have done webinars about teaching from poolside.
Some teachers have chosen to treat this as guidance and have continued to teach from within the pool.
Personally I would ask to see their covid risk assessment regarding this practice and question how they are maintaining social distancing (2m).
