Many don't seem to be wearing them over their noses...

I don't think it's because people don't know they have to cover their noses. They do know. I think it's because they don't care and don't believe in masks but put one on briefly in a shop because of it being mandatory.

@middleager

Yes, those ads (still remember the electricity pylon one and the water one) did have an impact, as terryifying as they were.

I still remember the one with the little girl picking up the wrong end of the sparkler Shock

Ok I get that some people can't wear them but really - I went into 4 shops and saw 6 or 7 people with no masks and more who weren't wearing them correctly. I find it hard to believe there were that many with a condition that meant they couldn't wear a mask.

These were small shops not a supermarket.

I agree, wish there was clearer information on correct mask wearing. I can't figure out if under nose wearers are doing it deliberately (don't believe in masks, don't like being told what to do) or if they just don't understand how daft they are being, or if it is all they can manage due to any personal issues.
It would help the group that don't realise you wear it over the nose.

The people who wear a mask know exactly how it should be worn. They just don't want to that's all. Selfish and entitled wastes of space, all of them. An ad campaign would make no difference cos they're special and can do what they like. The exempt ones don't have any mask on at all so you can tell the difference.

I saw a man take his mask off to cough. He then saw me and said ‘Oh sorry! I just had to take my mask off to cough’. Confused

I agree OP. We need a decent public health campaign covering how to wear one, how to take it on and off, how to wash/dispose of it, which types are most effective and also that some people are exempt and it's nobody else's business why.

The government has gone from 'masks do more harm than good' through 'probably a good idea after all' to 'mandatory' without ever effectively providing this public health information.

I don't think it will happen because they don't actually care about face coverings from a public health perspective. Any old shit strapped to your face will do, doesn't have to be effective, you just have to look as if you are wearing a face covering.

I've just re-read Hat Mancock's face covering speech - a bit of lip service about deaths of retail workers then it's all about 'confidence' to go shopping and the British Retail Consortium.

www.gov.uk/government/speeches/face-coverings-to-be-mandatory-in-shops-and-supermarkets-from-24-july

Really weird speech for a minister for health and social care.

This is not always true.

There will be quite a few people who are exempt, because actually they can't wear one effectively, but who are still trying their best, sometimes worsening their own health in the process. Maybe they can only manage a couple of minutes or maybe they can manage to half-wear it for some of the time.

It doesn't do anything, it's not effective, and people should not feel they have to put themselves through this. Legally they don't have to. It's a product of the nasty environment that has been building up around face coverings and those who are exempt. Some people would prefer to worsen their own health, risk needing an ambulance, or accept 1-2 days recovery time - just for a quick trip to the shops - if this means they can avoid confrontation. And some people have been told in no uncertain terms that despite being exempt, they nevertheless 'must accept' that they personally are a health risk to others and they have believed this and decided they must at least try to wear a face covering, regardless of the cost to their health. Or else they just shouldn't go out.

It's easy to bully vulnerable people.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. If you're exempt why would you walk round with a mask hanging off your chin? It serves no purpose at all and just muddies the issue of exemptions. Was that an accusation of bullying by the way?

@Redolent spot on. That's exactly the sort of ad to get the message across!

No, I'm not accusing you of bullying.

You ask - If you're exempt why would you walk round with a mask hanging off your chin?

I explained why people might do that in my previous post and IMO those reasons boil down to a reaction to being bullied.

Of course it serves no purpose. I said that too.

I might come under an exemption but wear one because I don't want hassle. I do have an exemption lanyard in my handbag but have not dared wear it yet!

Well done, hopefully it was OK to wear? MOH is exempt but still wears one as he is able to do so without suffering any more than the rest of us.

I don't understand why people keep saying things like this Confused

If you can wear a mask you are not exempt.
