Anyone else have hives with covid?

My boy has been suffering for 3 weeks now with hives. He's only 3 so naturally his covid test came back negative. GP said she has seen lots of kids with covid lately. No medication seems to be helping.

Anyone else having this experience?

This has happened to my 4 year old son recently. He was covered a few weeks ago ad the GP said do a covid test which was negative. They still haven't really gone

I had the most awful itchy rash a few weeks ago. Started on my arms, then over the course of 7 to10 days spread over my whole body. From about day 10 onwards I started to feel generally unwell (headache, exhausted, dizzy, shivery but no temp) At that point I went for COVID test which was negative.(although this was 10 days after rash started so would probably have been too late if COVID) GP however stated he believed it was a viral illness and I was signed off work for another week. Rash only now more or less cleared up 4 weeks later. Most odd illness I've ever had, so who knows!

mosscarpet · 04/08/2020 11:53

Should add I am in my 40s so not just kids experiencing this!

Heartofstrings · 04/08/2020 11:58

University college London have stated it should be considered a symptom. It's heartbreaking to see him so uncomfortable. Plus the medication is making his behaviour awful

Poor baby 😢 awful to see them poorly and not be able to do much. Would anti histamine help? My colleague had some weird virus and had hives and sickness. Could have been covid but don't think he could get a test. His wife works in hospital with covid patients though.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 04/08/2020 12:13

My son had a rash with his Covid but it wasn’t itchy.

Lindy2 · 04/08/2020 12:19

Oh the poor thing. If the Covid test is done more than 5 days after symptoms start I think you'd be likely to get a negative result even if it was Coronavirus.

The Zoe Covid symptom tracker definitely regards hives as a symptom and particularly so in children.

I'm guessing you've tried the usual soothing things like calamine lotion, a bath with a sock filled with porridge oats in it, aloe gel or natural yoghurt on the itchy areas.

I hope he gets better soon.

Heartofstrings · 04/08/2020 12:29

We've tried everything. He's currently on a mixture of antihistamine, emollient lotion. The steroid meds didnt work so now he's on some other random medication

My son has (had for about a year) something called paediatric atopic urticaria- he had a virus and it essentially set his histamine into overdrive. He needed daily antihistamines which after a year where managed to wean off. I would suggest a gp appointment to review in case it's not covid.

Heartofstrings · 04/08/2020 12:43

It's been 3 weeks and we have only been allowed one gp appointment and that was on friday.

Literally just spoken to the doctor and they are going to see him this afternoon

Oh bless him. That must be unbearable. Hope GP is helpful. It took me 8 days to even speak to a GP, then another 2 days before I could send pictures, then another 5 days waiting for a blood test. I never got any answers or anything that really helped either though.

meow1989 · 04/08/2020 13:20

Sorry, chronic idiopathic urticaria not atopic

Heartofstrings · 04/08/2020 13:37

@meow1989 this is exactly what they've said. But it feels like it's more of "we don't know, just go away"

That's pretty much what they said for us too - it's like an allergy but sometimes you never find the cause.the name literally translates close to hives of unknown allergy in children.

Have you asked for a referral to a paediatrician or allergy specialist? We actually had a private consultation whilst we waited for the nhs appointment which meant we could start treating it. I fully understand how absolutely awful it is to see baby in distress, coupled with the hives look bloody awful too! I nearly cried every time we tried to wean the meds and it flared up again. Like I say we are a year in and finally off them for 6 weeks, though it could flare up again at any time. Is there a lot of asthma eczema or hayfever in your family? Our paediatrician felt that because we have a lot ds is quite allergeny, though he has no specific allergies.

What antihistamines have you got? The paediatrician or gp can prescribe higher doses of different ones. Piriton never touched ds hives.
Theres too many allergens to test for everything but you can ask for ones that your child might come in to contact with - we asked for cat and they did house dust etc too as routine.

Yes, 2 year old DGD had hives that came and went for 4 days. She tested negative but her baby brother was positive. We all assume she got it first and gave it to him. Apparently, she was fine apart the hives. The baby didn’t exhibit any symptoms at all.

Thneedville · 04/08/2020 23:01

Poor thing! My 8 year old DS has had a terrible hive-y rash, just got it under control now with piriton on recommendation of pharmacist. Still got red marks all over now, but not raised abs itchy.

Negative test 3 weeks ago - he’s been rashy on and off since a week after he went back to school late June. This first time he had a rash it looked like hand foot and mouth, little blisters.

WhatRhymesWithTerf · 05/08/2020 00:21

I read something last week about a rash seemingly becoming a symptom that should be included with the sore throat.

I want to say it was that Jon Campbell bloke doing a recap of some study.

MummaPI · 05/08/2020 00:41

Both mine had a hive type rash a few weeks ago. Told by nurse not to test as not a symptom. Friends kids had the same rash and did test and it was negative. My daughters still has marks where they were. I think she gets them with a virus as has happened before.
