Rising number of cases in my borough

And the leader or the council (Brent) has sent a letter out asking people to keep taking precautions so as to avoid a return of some lockdown measures.

I know this has happened elsewhere of course, but nothing brings it home like it potentially happening where you live.

So worried about the autumn and winter and what they will bring. Also worried about schools opening if there is a rise in cases in the community already.

Our numbers are low, but watching them closely.

OP, I'm sure it can't be easy especially if you're following guidelines yourself as there isn't much you can do yourselves other than take sensible precautions.

Not easy for those concerned, but I'm hoping local lockdowns will happen quicker before numbers get too high in areas, to help keep people safer and reduce lockdown time if only by a few days.

Thanks for your message @ifonly4. Yes I guess it’s one of those wait and see situations - for all of us around the world really.

Brent have recorded 23 cases in the week 27 July -2 Aug, versus 31 the week before, 9 the week before that, and 13 the week before that. With 335k residents, that's an incidence of 7/100k this week, 9 last week - UK average is 8.6.

Seems a little over anxious!

PatriciaHolm · 04/08/2020 19:45

(that's him, not you!)

MRex · 04/08/2020 19:59

The wider picture is probably the slight uptick in cases in Harrow, Ealing, Hounslow as well. There's obviously a lot of mixing between the boroughs, so it makes sense to be careful. Cllr Butt is probably sensibly considering the risk that there is a possibility of higher spread in one community, so rates for just that community might be much higher than the per-100k suggest and people would do well to pay attention and ensure it dies back again (or dies off, preferably). Being more wary for a few weeks won't hurt anyone.

AgnesNaismith · 04/08/2020 20:01

Where are you finding your weekly info?

True. I was probably a little overly dismissive.

@AgnesNaismith - here. Caveat that the last 2/3 days may go up as data is incomplete.

coronavirus.data.gov.uk/cases?areaType=ltla&areaName=Brent

Note the site is having some issues right now and a number of local authorities appear to have (hopefully temporarily...) disappeared...

AgnesNaismith · 04/08/2020 20:47

Oh wow, I’ve been looking for that level of data for ages....obviously not in the right places Grin thank you!

Uhoh2020 · 04/08/2020 21:13

@PatriciaHolm when you say the UK average is 8.6. Is that 8.6 cases reported per day or per week?

PatriciaHolm · 04/08/2020 21:18

It was a quick calc for the cases per 100,000 population per week for the week 27 July - Aug 2.

Uhoh2020 · 04/08/2020 21:21

There's been 6 cases in my local authority in the past week with a population of 180k with 5 the week before, yet I'm in an area in the North where restrictions have been imposed Confused

Flev · 04/08/2020 22:17

That's really encouraging data for my area - no cases since July 25th!

Keepdistance · 05/08/2020 00:02

It excludes anything under 3 so lots of areas maybe whole england could have 2

PatriciaHolm · 05/08/2020 00:24

@Keepdistance that's just the map. The data tables include all numbers per day.

Hounslow is right by Heathrow. It's likely some of the increase is due to passengers (from Spain, Brazil, the US, India, etc) travelling to and from the airport on local transport. No point locking London down unless the airports close (or stay open but with quarantine hotels). It would also be strange if the reports in the news are true. The plan to trap people in London. Very strange seeing as people are free to travel to London from hot spots like Manchester, Leicester, and Bradford.
MRex · 05/08/2020 07:23

@SheepandCow - it could be the airport, but when you know the area the detailed map of where cases are suggests a different conclusion linked to the shopping districts. I also spoke with friends who live in the area and are part of that community.

torydeathdrug · 05/08/2020 09:15

Just to reiterate that the data charts don’t suppress numbers below three - if it is 0, 1, or 2 it will say so. The postcode map does. Different things. Would hate to spread false information.

DespairingHomeowner · 05/08/2020 15:22

OP - did you get a letter through your door? Just wondering how this has been communicated?
