Just spoken to a friend who does facial treatments and she told me that all of these business are folding and asking for food for their children as well as now suffering depression/anxiety /panic attacks .. is it really all worth it for this infection ? I think there will be more deaths from the lockdown etc

I mean there is no SD at pubs

I went to my local pub for Sunday lunch yesterday. Our table was 2m away from the next table. There were screens up at the bar, the staff wore masks, there were hand sanitisers all over and they were collecting names and numbers of each party. Every restaurant and bar I have visited it (albeit not many so far) have done the same so far.

Not all pubs have no social distancing.

Agreed Trashtara. If my daughter takes her children to soft play then that's us done with childcare. We couldn't take the risk.

I agree with your post OP

there are other illness being left behind because everting is covid

It isn't true that everything else medical has stopped. In fact our hospitals and GPs keep putting out messages to remind people they are still open and to not delay in getting treatment if they need it.

I know a number of people who have had treatment for non Covid issues during lockdown:

  • 1 cancer treatment ongoing, though he has sadly now died (but not sue to a lack of treatment)
  • treatment for two elderly patients, who have also now sadly died - again nothing to do with covid, and both were treated beforehand for their illnesses before and during lockdown, both in and out of hospital
  • another was an A&E visit for non covid symptoms; dealt with quickly and efficiently, and follow ups are ongoing
  • another has recently had a minor operation; it was delayed by a month but has no taken place
  • my own treatment has been ongoing with 2 doctors appointments, and blood tests, and two over the phone consultations with my consultant

The above are just those within my close family. I also know of more non Covid medical appointments and treatments which have continued to happen throughout.

Everything is about covid for a reason, because if it gets out of control then the hit to the economy will be far worse, with more job losses, depression etc. It's shit, but it is what it is. Livelihoods can be restarted when this passes, but lives can't.

Not all pubs have no social distancing.

Most places do a good job of putting in Covid measures, however it's the other customers who are the problem.

We went to an open air place last week. Their systems are fantastic - take names and numbers, open air, very spread out, frequent cleaning, there's a code on every table and you place an order and pay on you phone and don't have to leave your table for the entire time. The staff put the tray at the end of the table and you take stuff from the tray. We felt very safe.

On leaving there are steps with a metal barrier in the middle and a one way system. When we left, a group of young lads about 13 years old barged down the exit side and brushed passed all of us trying to go up. I am not at all embarrassed to say that I told them off. Put a damper on a very enjoyable day and I was quite upset by it.

Most people are considerate with the rules, others are either bolshy idiots or ignorant fools.

This may all be true op but who actually wants a facial treatment now?

IloveJKRowling · 03/08/2020 17:25

It does seem then that routine screening has taken a hit - but this will have been because of high numbers of patients with covid needing hospital and diversion of resources. Lockdown will have HELPED this problem. It is only because rates became low that resources could be diverted back to routine healthcare. If infection rates go up further (as they are doing with pubs etc opening) then healthcare resources will be needed for the influx of critical covid sufferers and routine screenings will slow again.

Lockdown is not the cause of the problem, the virus is. The lower we keep infection levels, the more we'll be able to approach 'normal' in healthcare and everywhere else.

The virus is spread by people, as Fauci keeps saying 'avoid crowds' particularly if people aren't masked.

I do also think people who lose jobs should really have a fast track onto benefits to tide them over, until we have a vaccine.

TheGreatWave · 04/08/2020 00:13

I have been called for my cervical screening, I will see if my yearly mammogram is on time in October.

Everything being about covid has had tragic outcomes, not least due to delays in diagnosis because "it's probably covid". Those deaths matter just as much and those lives were just as important, so apologies if the "if it saves just one life" is meaningless to me, because that life couldn't be saved because it was all about covid.

This virus is a natural disaster... there will be a recession... we need to try and protect peoples lives as much as possible....even if you didn't place any restrictions on businesses it wouldn't bring their business back... people would still be afraid to go and those who aren't would go and some of them would end up getting infected and some staff would too meaning the business would have to keep temporarily closing anyway... there isn't an easy answer or way out of this

@Aragog my haematology appointments have carried on but by phone. However I am waiting for an appointment for another department - their standard wait is 34 weeks. Rang today and they said it's now 34 weeks plus the 4 month back log so.. a year almost BlushShock
