Hi just looking for some advice now that the furlough scheme is winding down. From August employers to pay part of your salary so now I’m seen as surplus to requirements and have been made redundant, so I’m feeling a bit shit, useless and kinda on the scrap heap due to being over 50
I’m in Scotland and I’m married but I have contributed tax and NI for 40 years so where do I go from here regarding making a claim, I honestly have not got a clue what to do and to be honest I feel a bit overwhelmed to deal with it too.
I hope I have posted in the right section as it’s related to corona virus
Anyway fuck you corona ! Just feeling so shit and worthless tonight
Thanks if anyone has any suggestions where to start XX

I think you should be able to claim contribution based Job seekers for 6 months
regardless of savings or DH income
It's not a lot but every little helps
Contact the Job Centre to register ASAP
Apart from the money they are a gateway to any support that's available
Look after yourself,it's shit

Beckyk12 · 02/08/2020 21:18

Thankyou user1487194234
I’m totally lost me or the hubby do not have a scooby what to do, I have been really positive all through this but now it’s getting to me 😢
Thanks again I’ll look into that x

Hi, yes all that's available is contribution based JSA, although it's actually now called New Style JSA Confused. DH is in the same position as you, he's got about a week to go until he finishes. He too is over 50 and the job market is dire. He's been in his current role less than 2 years so gets no redundancy Sad. Fortunately my salary will help keep us ticking over but we will need to dip considerably into our savings as my salary won't cover our outgoings. The reality is starting to hit here too and I feel very anxious and worried but am doing my best to hide it from DH as he feels shit enough as it is. I hope you find something suitable soonFlowers

Cloudyroom · 02/08/2020 23:00

If you are over 55 you can access pension of money becomes tight

Squigget · 02/08/2020 23:06

@Cloudyroom thanks, I didn't realise that. DH is 53 so has a couple of years to go before that becomes an option. We'll be alright in the short term (probably up to a year if necessary), it's just the huge uncertainty as to when DH will be working again that adds to the strain.

It’s a stressful time tbh, Dh has said not to worry but I have always contributed towards the house, I was only in my job just over a month Cos I left a job I was In 15 years for a new start l, some bloody new start ! Going back to my old job isn’t an option either Cos that industry is dire too 😢
Sorry you and your dh are In the same position, it’s so bloody depressing x

I'm sorry you've lost your job, Becky 💐
but your DH sounds a very decent sort, which is a big plus

Do claim what you can and I hope you'll be able to find some sort of job soon, until things pick up again

TW2013 · 03/08/2020 01:40

Can you identify any key skills from your work which you can either use in a different job or which you could use on a self- employed basis? A role which you might not be able to do full time at first but which is sustainable over more years. Have you paid off a mortgage? Hopefully your dh is right and you don't need to worry financially.

Topseyt · 03/08/2020 04:05

Just a handhold from me. I am in the same situation and it is utterly shit.

You are not alone.

Thankyou I’m just feeling down today but I’m usually a very upbeat positive person so hopefully it’s just a glitch and I’ll come fighting back soon x

I'm almost the same as you but a few months further down the line. I got made redundant the first week of lockdown having only been in my job for 7 weeks. Had over 20 years in the job that I left. They wouldn't furlough me so was given notice and left.

Initially I thought I would get a job fairly easily but as the weeks have gone on it's become harder. I've tried but I'm in a bit of a niche and have been told I'm too experiences and too over qualified for a lesser role.

At the moment I have all my teens at home but when they go back to university/school I'll have the days to fill and am not sure how that's going to pan out.

Beckyk12 · 04/08/2020 22:29

@slalomsuki
Sorry to hear your in the same position, I suppose I was lucky in a way that I had only been in my new job 4 weeks and they furloughed me for 4 months, I should have expected it anyway last in first out usually isn’t it ?
It’s utter shit so I can totally empathise with you
Hope things pick up for you and you find something soon
X

@Beckyk12 how are you getting on now?

I've been offered a job, not ideal one and less money but I need to get back in to the world of work and do something. Will keep looking though for something else.
