Friends who we saw outside on Monday have just tested positive. Adults social distancing, cant guarantee kids did but I think they did. Do we have to isolate? They tested positive yesterday.

Ooh gosh it’s mad we don’t know isn’t it. I’m not sure, but jumping on here incase it happens to us so I know the answer!

Sorry can’t help! If I were to guess it would be yes!

RedCatBlueCat · 02/08/2020 11:30

I thought it was if you'd seen them within 48hrs of symptoms developing. So, when did they start feeling ill?

Imaystillbedrunk · 02/08/2020 11:30

I think the rule for track and trace is you'll be contacted if you were less than 2 metres for more than 15 mins, or indoors ... I would be booking a test and being cautious for the next couple of weeks

eeeyoresmiles · 02/08/2020 11:52

Regardless of what the rules say it would be good to isolate so that, if it has spread to your family, it cannot go a single step further.

Bear in mind the possible timing permutations. Do you know who in that family showed symptoms first? For instance could the other family's children have caught it first and been asymptomatic but infectious on Monday, even if the adults in that family started symptoms more than 48h after you saw them? The fact that you saw them more than 48h before they tested doesn't mean you can't have caught it, unfortunately.

Also bear in mind that if your kids did pick it up from the other family, then they could already have been asymptomatically infectious themselves for a couple of days, and you could be on the cusp of becoming infectious yourself. Or it might take longer for any of you to show symptoms.

6 days ago seems too long. I don't think it's justified for you to isolate if their symptoms only started in last 1-2 days.

dementedpixie · 02/08/2020 21:29

For test and trace they ask for details of those in close contact in the last 48 hours

That's why it's helpful to know who in that family started their symptoms in the last 48 hours. If they all did, then the chances are none of them could have been asymptomatically infectious a week ago. If only some did, then you have to consider the possibility that others in that family (especially children) could have been asymptomatically infectious a week ago.

Given the time frame you may have passed it on to them (5day average)

pandafunfactory · 02/08/2020 23:14

48 hours. So no you don't need to.

LilyPond2 · 03/08/2020 00:01

@pandafunfactory As eeyoresmiles has explained in a very well thought out post above, your approach is far too simplistic in a case where two families have met up.

Dontknowwhybut · 03/08/2020 00:05

Outdoor transmission is very rare. Estimates at something like 0.3% of transmissions happen outside. Add to that that it was over 48 hours ago, so risk even lower. No adult close contact, kids close contact less than 15 minutes. Again very low risk.

LilyPond2 · 03/08/2020 00:18

@Dontknowwhybut Do you have a link to the studies containing those estimates? I don't doubt that indoors is much higher risk, but surely most people can't say for sure where they contracted the virus, so very difficult to estimate proportion of cases involving transmission outdoors?

Dontknowwhybut · 03/08/2020 00:40

I will look, it was an analysis of tracked cases and SSEs I think. Common sense will tell you that mass gatherings outside, of thousands of people, on beaches, protesting did not lead to any increase cases. Most transmissions happen in the home.
