Anyone else have family members who think they can’t get ill?

DP had a message asking us to visit (still not allowed in Wales) basically saying ‘it’s ok we can’t get Covid’ I mean WTF ... why - WHY would they think that?

Are they young and incredibly fit and healthy? Or have they definitely already had COVID?

Not that I would agree with them even so, but if the answer to both questions is 'no' then they are just fooling themselves.

ACNH · 01/08/2020 21:35

Nope neither of those, intact one would definitely be in the shielding category.

Then for their sake, and your own, please do try to get through to them.

Back in mid-March, when this was all new and things were changing daily, my Dad also thought that it wouldn't affect him. He told me he wasn't worried and was carrying on as normal. He died from COVID about three weeks after that conversation.

No one thinks it will affect t them... Until it does.

ineedaholidaynow · 01/08/2020 21:47

There are many reports coming out that teenagers and young adults do get it, probably asymptomatic, but are a high risk of transmitting it. This appears to be the current problem in North of England.

I am so sorry @MrsKCastle

ACNH · 01/08/2020 21:49

I’m so sorry for the loss of your Dad,

We won’t be going, I just can wrap my head around it Confused

I know some very religious people who rely on God, so it would be His will if they got it, and they think that God is giving it to specific people, not necessarily sinners but them included, he also sometimes just needs to "call" someone home. So as a result if these believe they don't follow any of the guidance. It's all very odd.

Couchbettato · 02/08/2020 06:31

Ugh it's so frustrating. I get provoked blood clots anyway, and covid could kill me easily because I probably would get more provoked blood clots.

But my FIL thinks he had it last November. So that means he's willing to put every one else at risk because he thinks he is immune to something no one can confirm that he had.

He has had seasonal flu every year, and it sounds like he just had flu last year too to us, but nope. He's assured it's covid, so he's fine.

Orchidsindoors · 02/08/2020 15:23

Why do you say "still not allowed in Wales"? People have been allowed into Wales for weeks now.

Violetroselily · 02/08/2020 15:32

I stupidly feel like this myself. I know its naive but I can't help but think if I never get ill anyway, why am I likely to catch this? I just can't convince myself that I could get it and be very unwell from it. I think this is because I never ever get very ill at all - I get a minor cold maybe once every two years? Never had flu, tonsillitis, chest infections, no viruses etc. My strong immune system makes me feel a bit invincible.

(Yes I do follow govt guidance, have been wearing a mask for weeks etc).

swg1 · 02/08/2020 15:42

Yep. I have an aunt in her late sixties who is convinced that the power of willpower will mean she would just get a bad cold.

JudyGemstone · 02/08/2020 16:07

I don't think I can get Covid, because my partner had it (tested positive) and I still slept with him/ate his cooking/basically carried on as normal and I didn't get it. Had an antibody test which was negative too so don't even think I was asymptomatic.

ACNH · 02/08/2020 16:53

@Violetroselily and @JudyGemstone do you think you would act differently than you do if you thought you could get it?

@Orchidsindoors visiting people in their homes is not allowed (unless it’s your bubble)

Would I act differently? No, I don't think so because I'm doing everything I should be doing and have done since March. I social distance, I wear a mask, avoid public transport where possible. I have been to non essential shops in the last few weeks, but even if I was worried about getting it, I think the current measures would still be enough to make me comfortable to be going out.

lifesalongsong · 02/08/2020 17:07

Was their answer then? Why did they say they can't get it?

Kitcat122 · 02/08/2020 18:49

I thought I was unlikely to get it or if I did I would be fine . I'm never ill, I'm very fit healthy etc etc.. I got it mildly was doing the housework and cleaning while at home with it then bam week 3 couldn't breath and been ill for the past 4 months so everyone needs to take care. My friends nan of 87 got it and has no complications So you never know.

JessStu · 02/08/2020 19:30

@JudyGemstone

I'm in a similar situation. I can't seem to find much on immunity though.

Not really, I work for the nhs so wear a mask in shared spaces when i go into work and obviously in shops where it's required. Have been to pubs/restaurants/camping/beach, all in line with guidelines though.

I know, me neither! There has to be some of us who have natural immunity though 🤔

JessStu · 03/08/2020 09:09

@JudyGemstone

It would be interesting to know. I don't know if it was just fluke - I was immune to that strain, or if my immune system was working overtime at that point for some reason, or if I am generally immune to it. I'm still behaving as though I could catch it and pass it on though, mainly because I don't understand why I didn't catch it when technically I should have.
