Masks in Cinemas, Museums etc.

So from August 8th, face coverings will become mandatory in cinemas, museums, 'indoor places where you will potentially be with people you don't know'.

I admit, I don't get it. I can go for a meal in a pub without wearing a covering, as they record details for test-and-trace, and have distanced the tables. But I will need to wear a covering to sit in a cinema, where there are already restrictions on seats (Cineworld, for example, requires two empty seats be left between groups bookings - admittedly not vertically, but horizontally), and my details are there when I make the booking on the app?

I can walk around a play park with my nephews without wearing a face covering (maintaining social distancing), but I can't do the same in a museum?

I can't be the only person who thinks this is going to dissuade people from going - is it really enjoyable to wear a face covering to a 'fun' event??

and how the ever loving FUCK do you get the impression that the government is putting the science ahead of the economy, when Dom's mate Tim campaigned for and got 2m distancing reduced to none 1m and the pubs reopened before hairdressers and, y'know, places where drunk people aren't?

TheLegendOfZelda · 04/08/2020 20:39

This is saving me a fortune

And with all my money saved I have gone abroad and spent it all there, in places where these rules don't apply

itsaratrap · 04/08/2020 20:42

Surely every indoor public space should have a mandatory requirement for face coverings? Isn’t that obvious by now? (Exemptions notwithstanding, obviously)

Should have been in place months ago.

itsaratrap · 04/08/2020 20:45

BillywilliamV

Its nonsense, you can choose not to go to a museum or cinema if you or people you know are vunerable. If you go somewhere purely to enjoy yourself then you are not going to want to wear a mask for 2-3 hours, so what is the point in opening them at all?”

Because, thankfully, not everyone feels the same way as you (and Mr. Gumm, presumably, because he’s a miserable old sod too).

I am very happy indeed to wear a mask in all indoor public spaces I need to visit because I don’t want to unknowingly infect anyone.

HeIenaDove · 04/08/2020 22:59

Even my food shopping looks im on the supermarket sweep 60 second dash at the moment

I did this the day they became mandatory in England. I accidentally knocked over a Mr Kipling cake stand.

Still Boris would be proud Doing my bit against obesity!!

HeIenaDove · 04/08/2020 23:02

So what are the funeral directors going to say when a bereaved person sits there crying "stop snivelling and put your mask back on"

I suppose you can have a good cry with the mask on soaking it and making it useless.

Or be expected to do the good ol" British stiff upper lip and not cry at all

Dogwhistle · 05/08/2020 17:54

My sister is a funeral director. They have been having and continue to have a horiffic time trying to keep their staff safe dealing with covid+ bodies and mourning relatives who may or may not be covid+.

It's pretty dire that you'd mention it in the context of this thread that's been mostly talking about leisure venues.

It's not remotely comparable. But to answer your question, they do the best they can, as you would expect.

Cineworld have shared on social media this afternoon that masks are mandatory everywhere but in your seat while watching the film.

hamsterchump · 05/08/2020 18:21

Just seen that our local cinemas have confirmed that masks only have to be worn when moving around the cinema building, buying tickets/snacks etc but can be removed when seated. I'm so pleased because my partner wears glasses that steam up with every mask so we would have had to have given up going for the forseeable which would be such a shame as we try to go as often as possible, love the cinema.

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 05/08/2020 18:23

Dogwhistle- I lost both my mother and my aunt during lockdown and the funeral directors were wonderful. Please thank your sister for all that she and her colleagues do, especially in these dreadful times. I'll never forget the kindness shown to us. Flowers

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 05/08/2020 18:29

Karenovirus- you should write to the Lancet maybe and tell them their findings are wrong.
In the meantime, I'll take my Covid advice from the doctors and scientists not some random conspiracy theorist on a mammy forum.

@hamsterchump Just seen that our local cinemas have confirmed that masks only have to be worn when moving around the cinema building, buying tickets/snacks etc but can be removed when seated. they may prefer that to happen but from the 8th August you will have to wear a mask when seated.

Drivingdownthe101 · 05/08/2020 18:46

@Dogwhistle

I WISH the government was listening to Chris Whitty Hmm

As somebody who works for a museum I'm pretty upset with some of you. I am vulnerable, my partner is vulnerable, and at some point I'm going to have to go back to work when the museum reopens, and I'll STILL be vulnerable. Fucks knows what the government advice will be by then but I think you're a selfish idiot if you go to an entirely voluntary leisure activity and don't wear a mask* Angry

*and yes, of course I'm not talking about those who can't. Just those who can but won't.

I had braces as a kid - they were horribly uncomfortable when I first wore them. Still did and soon got used to it.

I wear glasses - new ones are always uncomfortable and weird - but I wear them.

When I ride my bike my head gets all sweaty under my helmet - but I wear it.

I'd be more comfortable in a car without wearing a seat belt, but I wear it.

Just wear the damn mask Angry

But no one on here is saying they’re going to go to museums and not wear a mask. They’re just saying they’re not going to go. Which is a perfectly valid choice.

I’m not sure that’s correct @AldiAisleofCrap

The U.K. Cinema Association tweeted the following today. So you are certainly still allowed to remove it to eat and drink.

HeresMe · 05/08/2020 19:46

You are completely wrong they have had guidance from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport which states you don't have to try and do your research before posting unsubstantiated info as fact.

MarcelineMissouri · 05/08/2020 20:16

And really that does make sense for cinemas seeing as once you are seated you will socially distanced from those around you, whereas you are more likely to come into closer contact with people going to the loo or being in the lobby.

Before people start talking about being in an enclosed space for a long period of time, I do understand that concern however 1. It’s not actually that enclosed - it’s a huge space, very different to an ordinary room 2. Uk cinemas (modern ones) use roof top air conditioning units which are constantly drawing in fresh air rather than recirculating the same air (this is a split unit - much more common in offices) This I know as it’s dh’s job. The units for his chain are set to pull in 10 litres of fresh air per second per person (as in the full capacity of the screen) That is more than you would actually breathe in and very different to the air conditioning you would get in bars/restaurants etc. So hopefully that is reassuring for some who might be worried about this aspect of it.

HeIenaDove · 05/08/2020 20:52

@Dogwhistle i was being sarcastic . Pointing out that its going to put more pressure on funeral directors.

HeIenaDove · 05/08/2020 20:53

And i mentioned it because someone put up a list..........and funeral directors was on it.

I know exactly what the legal situation is regarding masks in cinemas. They are twisting the law if that is what they have stated , you may remove your masks when seated only when eating and drinking is reasonable, so not the whole time you are sitting down at all.
Maybe do your research before believing what you want to be true. Independent cinemas are struggling financially they want customers.

Wow, what an incredibly selfish and arseholish thing to do. Endangering yourself and others.

There is no rigorous science to support masks in a community setting.

Utter nonsense. Wearing masks stops people from dying. Period. People are dying in their thousands every day. What on earth is wrong with people that they refuse to take one very simple easy step that helps to not slaughter people, and means life can start to get back to normal and the economy can start to recover?

If you go somewhere purely to enjoy yourself then you are not going to want to wear a mask for 2-3 hours, so what is the point in opening them at all?”
The majority of people don’t have an issue with wearing a mask. I don’t even notice mine and completely forget I’m wearing one. It’s a tiny bit of cloth, not barbed wire. (And to preempt the flood of “good for you wearing a mask makes me feel like I’m choking” comments, I’m not taking about the minority of people with medical exemptions. Anyone who’s exempt needs to be respected and supported and not shamed or attacked.)

blurpityblurp · 06/08/2020 11:56

It’s just mind boggling that people will cheerfully Murders grannies just to maintain the illusion of “not being told what to do.”

This is why we got stuck with the unworkable and disastrous nightmare that is Brexit, because of idiots like that.

TheGreatWave · 06/08/2020 12:24

Maybe the folks of MN want to tell the Welsh government that their advice is wrong then?

If the 4 nations can't even agree on the "science" it is no surprise that the layperson is often not convinced.

@SengaStrawberry

It's a load of rubbish, people are convinced that you die if you contract covid.

It's same as that stupid pee image people keep posting about masks.
