This is what's going to kill travel

Surely at some point travel companies are going to have to be allowed to tell bookers that if you book post march you do so fully expecting the risks?

I don't think it's going to kill travel. Most people aren't in a position to book 2 overseas holidays within two weeks of each other.

There are and will be tussles with travellers and travel companies over refunds/rebookings etc, but each case need to be taken on its own terms, in the context of the t&cs of the company.

raviolidreaming · 31/07/2020 16:22

I agree. In a Center Parcs facebook group I'm in, someone has posted to say they booked 4 DAYS AGO for a break in a couple of weeks but now want a refund because they've changed their minds because of covid Hmm

Holidaying now is a gamble. If you can't afford to gamble, then don't.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 31/07/2020 16:25

Technically they can go though. Its a bonkers situation but there's nothing to stop them leaving the country again. In this case Tui are able to provide what the customer has booked. If the customer can travel due to FCO advice its an insurance claim.

Holiday companies can't be held responsible for constantly changing advice. The government needs to say no leisure flights until October so travel businesses can move on with the job of sorting refunds and rebookings. The travel editor of which tweeted on Saturday night that he was trying to update the guidance for their Website and had to revise it 5 times in the course of an evening as the FCO advice kept changing.

ohthegoats · 31/07/2020 16:25

Yep. I feel a bit sorry for these folk getting holidays cut short, or having to quarantine etc, but this isn't a surprise. The reason I'm not in France right now is because I couldn't guarantee I wouldn't get stuck etc.

It's a gamble.

Cheetahfajita · 31/07/2020 16:26

I think a lot of people changing to Greece and Turkey are going to come unstuck too.

It's a minefield.

Going abroad is so much hassle and risk at the moment in terms of what will and won't go ahead, or quarantine at short notice. Personally, it doesn't seem worth it. I don't know why people are putting themselves through it.

lifeafter50 · 31/07/2020 17:39

@BlackberrySky
Completely agree!
DD and her boyfriend asked me today if I thought they should go to Croatia! No! Too much hassle and the Gvt has already put it on a watch list for quarantine -l just leave it for now.
Yes some travel businesses will go bust but they will regroup and next year there will be high demand so those that survive will be able yo charge high prices and recover.

cologne4711 · 31/07/2020 17:50

Things change so quickly don't they. I thought Croatia had very few cases and suddenly it's on the quarantine watch list. Or is that because they've let tourists in with it?

I do think there's a case for testing everyone before they get on a plane out of their place of residence. I know the test isn't 100% accurate but it would certainly filter out a fair few.

BarefootHippieChick · 31/07/2020 17:52

I honestly think by next year more people will be travelling, we'll just have new and quicker testing measures in place (finger prick system possibly) for people coming back from abroad, plus the government will probably allow travel to all countries with certain areas advised against if that area has a high rate of cases. Masks may be worn in airports and on planes for a long time.

Jaxhog · 31/07/2020 18:23

I wish I could sympathize but I can't. At least you got one holiday. I've had to cancel one and postpone another one to next year. At the moment it's a gamble. Everyone knows that. I'm also guessing that you got both holidays at a knockdown price, exactly because of the risk.

It won't kill travel, because the rest of us are sensibly going to wait until next year.
