www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-53552557 This is not good news. If the cat caught it from a human, presumably human's can catch from animals which causes a whole new set of problems.

The link says it does not mean the disease is being spread to people by their pets. but saying there'a no evidence doesn't mean it's proved that it can''t happen.

There was a dog in New York as well, the dog has since died I think.

Crankley · 31/07/2020 10:18

Not good, both cat and owner recovered.

Is it particularly concerning? The disease started in animals before spreading to humans so its no great leap that there is two way transmission.

My cat doesn't have a particularly active social calendar so I don't think he'll be responsible for any local outbreaks. I hope such reports don't lead to animal abuse and pet abandonment.

There was a case months ago of a cat with Covid 19 in another country. So, it clearly isn't a problem as there would have been many more stories like this if it was. There is no evidence that pets can pass Covid to owners. The BVA does say that animals can possibly act as fomites, in the same way that furniture etc. can. So as always the best prevention is handwashing.

OP, please be careful about what you post on this, there really is NO evidence that pets can pass it to humans. As a pp says, there will be idiots who might use this as an excuse to harm or dump animals.

If you own a mink farm, you might want to be careful.

JacobReesMogadishu · 31/07/2020 10:36

I'm not worried about catching it from my cat or dog. I'm more worried if I get it I might pass it on to them and they get sick.

NoRoomInBed · 31/07/2020 10:37

There was some tigers in USA that caught it too mildly from what I remember.

dementedpixie · 31/07/2020 10:38

If it easily passed to cats and dogs there would be many more cases. There is no evidence they pass it to humans. Best thing to do is wash hands after touching them anyway

VettiyaIruken · 31/07/2020 10:40

I'm quite worried how people might react to this report. I hope the news companies are all very clear and responsible in their reporting! I saw some horrific pictures from China relating to how some people reacted when it was rumoured that pets may carry the virus.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 31/07/2020 12:20

I think they tested pets as part of the Heinsberg study and I don't remember reading anything alarming.

catsandlavender · 31/07/2020 12:38

@JacobReesMogadishu same. My worry is passing it on to my cat who is basically my baby! I don’t really worry about getting it myself, it’s the fear of passing to loved ones (which includes my cat).

Topseyt · 31/07/2020 12:51

It isn’t news that Covid 19 is a zoonosis (a disease that can pass between different species).

It is originally supposed to have transmitted from bats to humans at that god awful meat market in Wuhan.

It has been found in several other animals as others have said. They are often asymptomatic and might only carry it on their coats, from which it is unlikely to be easily transmissible anyway.

Perhaps not enough is known about it, but I highly doubt that 5here have been many cases and I wouldn’t bother worrying about it.
