Great! Another thi g to worry about...

I'm not worrying about it. For me the benefits of being on the pill far outweigh the risks

LarkDescending · 29/07/2020 18:38

Yes - been there done that. HRT + Covid = 2 pulmonary emboli (so far) in my case.

LarkDescending · 29/07/2020 18:41

*I say so far. Obviously I have been taken off HRT, but the jury is out on when the clotting risk will return to normal post-Covid (according to the haematologist).

Orchidsindoors · 31/07/2020 09:09

Lark, have you been tested for G2021A prothrombin? That increases the chance of clotting.

LarkDescending · 31/07/2020 09:26

Orchidsindoors I am negative for G2021A prothrombin and Factor V Leiden, and took the contraceptive pill without any problems for years (also lots of longhaul travel and major abdominal/pelvic surgery without ever having a DVT or embolus).

They do think this is Covid coagulopathy, but the learning on it is obviously in its infancy. I am being reviewed further in a few weeks by both the haematologists and the pulmonologists.

Orchidsindoors · 31/07/2020 09:32

Wow hope you recover soon Lark. It's interesting that HRT because of the estrogen side is very risky, especially with covid and no prior clotting concerns.

Reallybadidea · 31/07/2020 09:34

Typically alarmist misreporting from The Daily Mail as per bloody usual. There is no new 'study'. The paper they're reporting on is basically an opinion piece which suggests that women on oestrogen containing oral contraceptives or HRT may have a higher risk of blood clots. The paper itself states that there have been no reports of increased incidence of VTEs (blood clots) in women on these drugs.

So, it's something that needs to be considered by doctors and researchers, but absolutely no reason for anyone to panic.

"The paper itself states that there have been no reports of increased incidence of VTEs (blood clots) in women on these drugs."
Well, there's Lark above. And there are numerous people on clotting facebook sites, reporting the same, ie that they've had an increase of clots since covid is around. It's a fact that covid clots blood, there has been many numerous studies agreed about that. So I dont think it's too unusual to think that women on estrogen will have an even higher chance of clotting.

Reallybadidea · 31/07/2020 11:07

Of course there's a plausible hypothetical link. But that doesn't mean that there is one in practice. With a new disease like covid there will be lots of plausible links to lots of different factors, but it's really important to establish which ones are correct. For example, at the beginning of the pandemic there was thought to be a link between taking some blood pressure medications and developing severe covid. There was a reasonable rationale why that would be the case. It turns out that blood pressure medications don't increase the risk of severe covid, but lots of people panicked and stopped taking them - this may well cause harm in the long term.

Orchidsindoors · 31/07/2020 11:36

Covid causing blood clots, isnt hypothetical, it's a fact. They discovered it very early days and theres been numerous reports on it ever since.

Reallybadidea · 31/07/2020 12:22

Yes, I know that part of the covid pathophysiology is hypercoagulability, but being on oestrogen-containing drugs further increasing the risk is plausible but currently hypothetical.
