Is anyone having builders etc in during this?

We tore down wallpaper only to find it was covering an absolute mess of decades old paper which had been plastered over in some places and not in others. It’s beyond us to sort out but we are keen to sell the house during the no stamp duty period. Would we be mad to get someone in to sort it out? Ds and I have asthma so are slightly more at risk of Covid.

Unless you are planning on watching them all day (in which case good luck finding someone willing to do the work) you'll be in a different room to them and 2 meters away at all times. The only risks would be in shared toilets and even then it'll be very small and the vast majority of builders would be willing to keep to 1 toilet if you have more than one or wipe down surfaces after use.

We've had a variety of work done over the last 4 months.

We kept away from them, most of them wouldn't accept drinks from us, we made the downstairs loo available only to them (cleaned before and after their use), and kept distance when we needed to talk.

No problems have arisen as a result.

MsSweary · 27/07/2020 13:51

Yes I have, all usual precautions taken.

ACautionaryTale · 27/07/2020 14:12

we've had electrician, carpenter, plaster and soon to be decorator in

no particular precautions

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 27/07/2020 15:11

Yes, dishwasher repairman and electrician.
Easy to distance. We have made sure we opened windows in advance. They have said they’re not allowed to accept drinks.

I've got builders due at mine soon, I'm very keen to get the work done! Hadn't occurred to me to take precautions but they will be in a different room. I'll offer them drinks but leave the decision to them if they want to accept them or not.

Yeah, major work on house started a month ago. We're very rarely within 2m of them for more than a few minutes at a time.

We bought them their own kettle and tea/coffee Etc. They have their own portaloo.

We just wipe everything they've touched that we need to touch every evening.

ACautionaryTale · 27/07/2020 15:28

we made ours regular cups of tea and fed them bacon rolls every morning

no one is sick (but we've had covid so frankly just crack on as normal)

FizzyPink · 27/07/2020 15:31

Yes last week. It actually didn’t occur to me to take any precautions. They ate the cakes and biscuits I baked them happily enough and I put the glasses and mugs they used straight in the dishwasher.

I’m not sure it’s any different to having friends over for dinner and we’re doing that now

Our HA are doing our roofs. Flats A neighbour had to have the fire brigade out on Saturday night because water streamed into his kitchen through the kitchen light. Phoned Sanctuary four times. They wouldnt come out to the huge job that had gone wrong that tenants didnt ask for.
First i knew of it was the commotion in the car park. Saw my neighbour in the car park. Then two firefighters came around the corner. One with a ladder, one with a hammer.

After talking to the other tenant i asked if he had rung the contractor He said he didnt have the number. I went down and gave him the most recent number we have been given. One from Feb when we got a letter saying work was due to take place in March (was postponed due to pandemic) this letter had a mobile no on it which i gave him

I talked to the firefighter who was also the driver and told him the name of the HA and the contractors.

The firefighters are unhappy with the HA

Problems should have been foreseen in these winds with only blue plastic sheeting between our ceilings and the sky.

Cunts.

We have had a roofer, plumber, electrician, builder here since restrictions were lifted at the end if May.

Keep distance, hand wash etc 😊

AlecTrevelyan006 · 27/07/2020 16:01

You'll have difficulty getting a plasterer as the supplies are like gold dust at the moment - British Gypsum, who produce most of the stuff for the UK market, shutdown (when they didn't have to!)at the start of lockdown and production is still not back to normal

NotJust3SmallWords · 27/07/2020 16:20

We've had builders and other workmen in to do various bits recently. It was fine and they didn't seem to have any issues with coming out.

Margo34 · 27/07/2020 17:10

We're having trades people in to repair our home. I'm in the clinically vulnerable category too as I'm heavily pregnant, we were about to start the work in March but it all got postponed. So now on an even tighter timescale to get it all done in time!!

Elouera · 27/07/2020 17:15

We've had an electrician and several real estate come through. All have offered to wear a mask if we wanted them too.

The electrician stayed several hours- MUCH longer than I thought. He had a drink, used the loo and I just wiped it down afterwards. If you can stay outside or in another room when they are working, and open the windows, then it reduces the risks and also helps get the dust out.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 27/07/2020 17:23

Had plumbers for the last 5 weeks and it should all be done this week. They’ve done two bathrooms. They wore masks and brought their own food and drinks. No issues.

sunglasses123 · 27/07/2020 18:06

Same here. Outside work and they have their own kettle and use the garage. Portable loo so they dont need to come in.
