£10bn but testing still a postcode lottery?

Living close to central London (population >8.2million), we've discovered that it's impossible to get tested in person at a centre unless you have a car. It’s all drive through only, and on the outskirts of the city. Obviously Uber is not an option if symptomatic. The nearest walk in testing centre to us is over 10 miles away. And they don't allow you to walk through a drive through. It takes ages to get results from Covid home tests that you need to mail through the post.

Mumsnet is littered with examples of people who've clearly had covid symptoms but never been tested.

£10bn for test and trace and yet over four months since lockdown started here we are. How is the government expecting to get the pandemic under control absent a vaccine if they can't/won't sort testing out? Why are they getting away with a poor grasp of true numbers? And if and when a vaccine does emerge, should we expect more roll-out shambles?

I'm sorry about the ranty post but this makes me so angry!

Testing was very poor early on in the pandemic, but now the UK is testing very widely as demonstrated by our relatively low % of positive tests. Postal tests are available for those that don't have access to drive/walk in centres. Mobile units are being deployed to hot spots.

The tests are reportedly missing around 30% of positive cases too.

Postal tests are back within 48 hours. We’ve used them and had no issues.

I think postal ones are pretty quick actually. What do you think the rest of the uk are doing when people don't drive?

lurker101 · 28/07/2020 10:30

I’m not sure about others but I did a postal test at 3pm in a Friday, posted it for collection at 6.30pm and received my (negative) results at midnight on Saturday. So 33hrs from test to result which I thought was pretty good given that there was post both sides and a weekend included.

My postal one came back quickly. No walk through here and nearest drive through was over 60 miles each way.
