16 cases linked to one pub - all pubgoers asked to self-isolate

Pubgoers urged to self-isolate after 16 cases linked to pub

Health officials are urging visitors to a West Sussex pub to self-isolate after it was linked to 16 new coronavirus cases.

Crawley borough council has urged everyone who has visited the Downsman pub between 8 and 18 July (excluding 16 July) to self-isolate for two weeks from the date of their last visit.

On 19 July, the pub posted on Facebook that it had taken the decision to temporarily close after two of its staff members tested positive for Covid-19.

“There are 16 confirmed cases of coronavirus with a link to the pub and while this is a relatively small number and may not be the definite source of infection for all these cases, we are asking people to take action to ensure the virus does not spread further,” says a statement on the councils’ website.

“West Sussex county council public health and Public Health England are continuing to monitor the situation and will organise contact tracing for any further identified cases who may have visited the pub.”

Probably not since people don't tend to die of Norovirus.

Yes they absolutely do. 200,000 people die every year globally of it. It kills the very young and very old usually because of issues with dehydration. Care homes are very vulnerable to outbreaks of it and it is dangerous to them.

It’s for this reason that I give fake details in every time

And there's one reason why test and trace won't work

esveee · 26/07/2020 19:34

Fake details? We're all screwed. If someone 2.5 netres away has covid and you're sitting near them for half an hour in an enclosed space, you'll probably get it! The 2 metre rule is not magic indoors!!

daisymay133 · 26/07/2020 19:38

Ask around

I honestly don’t know anyone giving real details as in the real world people aren’t that scared of Covid and don’t want to isolate left right and centre on the off chance they get it

It’s already been publicised that more than half contacted dont even pass on their contacts

SengaStrawberry · 26/07/2020 19:41

Irresponsible

lifeafter50 · 26/07/2020 19:45

Am intrigued as to why not 16th (nosey)

lifeafter50 · 26/07/2020 19:47

I was in a pub today and no details were asked for. No temp check either, which I have had in another pub.
Maybe they realise pointless to come levy 'details, if people give false ones (could even give malicious ones I suppose to drop Dominic Cumminings some else in it.

Contact tracing isn't about being 'scared of Covid'. It won't stop you getting it. It will warn you that you may have picked it up so that you don't pass it on to other people, because no matter how scared anyone is or isn't of getting the virus themselves we'd all quite like to avoid another wave of tens of thousands of deaths and another months-long lockdown, thanks ever so.

annabel85 · 26/07/2020 20:12

@MrsTerryPratchett

We had people over (against my better judgement) for a socially distanced birthday party for DH. I didn't drink, everyone else did. People went from being responsible to hugging in three hours. Not DH (he was told).

Alcohol makes people very stupid and risk-tolerant.

Alcohol should have been the first thing to be banned if the government were taking Covid seriously.
lifeafter50 · 26/07/2020 20:24

Oh, God and we should all sit on a spike to make sure we have no enjoyment from anything ever (pace Blackadder)

SexTrainGlue · 26/07/2020 20:25

As well as pubs (plural, I'm sure I read an article yesterday naming a half dozen or so), there's also this:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-shropshire-53544543

21 cases at Craven Park caravan park in Shropshire - possibly linked to cases in Wales. There were 2 positives last week, bigger number now.

GlacindaTheTroll · 26/07/2020 20:27

Oh, God and we should all sit on a spike

Just the one spike, then, two would be an extravagance

This will never end without tens of thousands more deaths and more damage to the economy because so many people are such utter thick cunts.
StatisticalSense · 26/07/2020 20:36

@SexTrainGlue
That would appear to be a travellers site rather than a holiday park so would have been open throughout lock down and is no different to an outbreak on any residential street with neighbors who regularly interact.

bigbluebus · 26/07/2020 20:42

@SexTrainGlue. I live in the same county as that 'caravan site'. It is definitely a traveller site rather than a holiday site so people are likely to be mixing as a community far more than anyone would be doing on holiday right now.

ineedaholidaynow · 26/07/2020 20:47

@daisymay133 do you have children, will you follow the rules re COVID testing at school?

Do you know anyone vulnerable, do you care about them?

Babamamananarama · 26/07/2020 20:56

'I'd stick to outdoor seating for the time being, I don't think there's any higher risk there than there is on the beach or the park, eg.'

Depends if the bar person who pulled your pint has asymptomatic Covid doesn't it?

MidnightCitrus · 27/07/2020 14:24

@daisymay133

That’s ridiculous

I’ve been loads of pubs and ensure I’m never closer than two metres to anyone and remain seated, order on app etc

It’s for this reason that I give fake details in every time

Asking everyone to isolate everytime they go out is stupid people can’t isolate every month!

well aren't you wonderful - howabout you just don't go out at all?

btw - what are your thoughts on vaccinations and on masks?

Redolent · 27/07/2020 14:29

It’s also in your own interest to know if you’ve been in close proximity to someone with Covid. Even if you won’t quarantine, it might make you rethink other decisions, eg meeting up with someone vulnerable.

Actually let’s not get sucked in to the idea that just because you are near someone with Covid you will definitely catch it. It clearly is pretty virulent however this article is about research on your chances of infection.

If you are LESS than 1m away then there is a 13% chance you will catch it from them.
1 metre away = 2.6% chance

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 27/07/2020 18:45

How did two members of staff manage to infect 16 customers with all of the protections in place? Social distancing would be in place and I doubt they were face to face for more than 15 minutes, which is what many claim is necessary. Would be interesting to hear how this happened.

puzzledpiece · 27/07/2020 20:33

Local to me are 2 popular pubs and one youngish man visited both on the same night and then tested positive for Covid. Both pubs had to be shut down and locals alerted. Not sure if any others developed the disease though

Mummypig2020 · 28/07/2020 06:36

I don’t get how it happened either. My husband has worked in a small office with 10 other people throughout this, no ventilation and no ppe. One of them tested positive at the beginning of lockdown and not one other person caught it.

3cats · 28/07/2020 07:00

Some people spread it to a lot of people, others to no one. I think they found it to be about 20/80. Is your husband’s coworker kind of quiet?

There was an incident at a pub near us where a customer spread it to 10 other customers. My guess is that she was doing a lot of talking to many different people and that’s how it spread. If you have a person just quietly drinking their pint in a corner, it’s unlikely they will pass it on.

Mummypig2020 · 28/07/2020 10:51

No, they talk and socialise a lot.
