When will dentists be back to normal?

I’ve just have my 6 monthly appointment for the end of August cancelled as it’s emergency appointments only.
While it’s not an emergency, I do need my gums checking as I have an inflamed area.

Does anyone know when dentists are likely to be back to normal? Thanks

Depends on the dentist, some locally now are doing regular checkups etc

Just had an update from mine. Scotland - they’re now opening ALL their practices for all aerosol treatment... if you’re private. If you’re NHS you can do one.

I KNOW this is not the choice of dentists.

Mine is running as normal, reopened on 17th June. I went on Wednesday, they said they were still catching up on hygienist appointments but everything else seemed normal. Mine is private though, so possibly different to NHS ones. Glad I decided to swap to it from my NHS dentist last year. Seems reasonably priced for an all round better service - but we all have pretty good teeth so maybe would be a different story if we needed lots of treatment! Me and my two children had our checkups and I had an x-ray of my wisdom tooth all for £45.

Mine is private. Doing checkups but no fillings so WTAF is point of checkups if they can't do anything more powerful than an antibiotic prescription to save a tooth. I am hoping something better might happen by October. Other countries are doing everything you might need, boohoo.

I had an emergency wisdom tooth extraction on Monday. I was really impressed - no waiting and all over and done with in minutes. Everyone in PPE, temperature check, lots of hand sanitiser and a sealed plastic box to put my bag in while I was in the chair (box was thoroughly sanitised after). No toilet though which was a bit if a pain. I was triaged via phone last thing on Friday and was in by 10am on Monday. NHS dentist.

They did say they had absolutely no idea when they'd be up and running as normal though which is a shame - my last scale and polish was cancelled in March and I haven't had one since July last year!

I’m in Scotland with a private dentist. They’re doing everything now but there’s an additional Coronavirus levy to cover PPE etc. It’s £7 for normal and £40 for ant any drilling.

Moonflower12 · 25/07/2020 14:52

Never! They'll always be sadistic bastards who love causing pain!

The problem we have in England is that the NHS dentists have no need to get back to work. They are being paid 80% of their wage (the 20% loss accounts for all the wages theyre not paying whilst staff furloughed and cost of equipment etc). They have been asked (when back to work) to do 20% of the UDAs they were before. So ultimately they will have no incentive to get back to work for anything other than extractions or emergencies. Private dentists on the other hand however are back and working "almost" as normal.

The short-sightedness of the NHS dentists has been astounding to me. This is all part of the plan by the Tory Gov to start selling off NHS Dentistry. Ultimately if the dentists are doing 20% of what they did previously and no-one is complaining about it do we really need them? So a good argument to make dental hubs permanent, Where people on low incomes go for extractions. No dentures, no crowns, No health checks for kids. Give it a couple of years and many of these dentists will be kicking themselves for resting on their laurels now - because if theyre not private and dont have the means to open a business theyll be out of work. Its disgusting how they havent kicked up an almighty fuss. Why arent they outside downing street demanding PPE and getting people back in the chair?

Spodge · 25/07/2020 17:22

Mine is private and I am having a check up next week. However they have said that they will do crowns, fillings etc if necessary. No idea if there is an additional PPE cost, but I expect there will be.

Theforest · 25/07/2020 17:27

My son has extractions and brace fitting appointments in the next fortnight, but I dont think checkups are going ahead.

purplepingu · 25/07/2020 17:37

September checkup was cancelled yesterday, receptionist said they expected it to be the end of the year.

Weird considering the hospital is back up and running doing wisdom tooth extractions under general anaesthetic as I was in on Wednesday for that doing, but can't have a checkup at the regular dentist until the end of the year.

SnowyMouse · 25/07/2020 19:46

Mine is doing checkups (NHS). No non-urgent AGPs, like hygienist, but I've got another appointment in 3 months.
