I can see us all going on rashening soon. More control over our lives. Mind you the generation from 2nd world war all seem to live a long time, with no obesity issues so maybe a good thing.

I don't understand this at all. Obesity has always been a health issue - it increases the likelihood and risks associated with heart disease, cancer, diabetes and all sorts of other things. If someone wasnt able to lose weight to avoid getting heart disease why would they lose weight to avoid covid??

Beebityboo · 26/07/2020 17:06

I think the thing with obesity is, when you are young at least it isn't seen as an "immediate" threat in your mind. You know you need to do something about it but for whatever reason you just push it back and back. Covid has made it an immediate threat which is frightening when you know you can't lose enough in time. I've lost seventeen pounds in lockdown but need to lose a lot more to be out of the woods.

Just to mention that some articles on nutrition advise this is not a good time for crash diets...

There's been a ton of evidence ever since covid-19 hit Europe that obesity increases the risks of developing complications. The government would be extremely remiss not to inform the public so they can take steps to their own health

Actually we didn't need to wait for Covid - it's already been known for decades that obesity's a factor in poor outomes from many ailments

Unfortunately, though, you won't get a sensible discussion about weight on MN

Indeed, 90% increase risk from COVID at 40 BMI, is lower than the increased risk of a stroke from many studies (this added risk thing is difficult as it's so difficult to control for unknowns, but that applies to COVID as much as other things, especially as obesity goes in hand with other things.)

However if an additional fear of covid helps you lose the weight, then that's good full stop, how to lose the weight is the problem people have, I'm sure everyone knows (on some level) the risk their weight brings.

The problem is that obesity is normalised, and that people are getting fatter younger. A morbidly obese 30-something may not have symptoms of type 2 diabetes and circulatory diseases yet, and people interpret that as being fit and healthy.
