Are you ready to go back to the gym?

I don't use the gym much but I do enjoy some of the classes and have booked a yoga class and spin for this week.

Now I'm wondering how safe/sensible that is. I've enjoyed exercising outdoors. My poor body has missed the yoga but I don't need the spin, I fancy it for the social element I suppose, I'd probably have a coffee after with people I haven't seen in a while, but I can do without and I guess if I really missed them I'd have arranged to meet before now.

Are you ready/comfortable to go back?

I meant peacocking, but cocking works just as well.

I'm 64 and I've been at the gym since 16 May (germany) for 1-2 hours, 5 days per week
I'm a gym rat 🏋🏼‍♂️

Hygiene there is excellent, frequent cleaning, good spacing, sanitisers everywhere.
So far no outbreaks reported here in gyms
I decided the risk is acceptable for the benefits

I have compromised by not showering or going in the sauna,
also not chilling in the coffee bar - we wrinklies used to natter for hours there

ListeningQuietly · 28/07/2020 12:36

I am showering
but am now happily smelling of chlorine again so will merrily go back every day

crosseyedMary · 28/07/2020 12:45

I've been every day since the gym opened, I really missed 'proper' strength training, feels pretty safe, everyone is very distanced and everyone is doing the cleaning

Went for my second session this morning (5am) - did a bit more than I intended but still expected to be out by 6am so I wasn't late for work. 0557hrs the member of staff comes in "are you booked onto the next session too?" I replied no and said I was nearly done. he said "you've got two minutes" and walked off! I had actually finished so bang on 6am I left - hadn't realised that twenty people were queued up waiting to enter the gym for the 0600-0710 slot! Apart from the last minute pressure to get out, I really enjoyed being back and actually lifting some weights. Unfortunately after yesterdays bodyweight split squats I can hardly walk but that's another moan!

My DD and I are looking forward to swimming again. Ours aren't open yet and when they do, it'll be lane swimming only for a while which isn't useful for DD who isn't strong enough in the water to be able to do that yet, certainly not without resting which the rules state we're not supposed to do in the pool. I think it will be a while before certain disabilities can be accommodated there again.

ListeningQuietly · 28/07/2020 14:39

BiBabbles
not sure which rules say you have to lane swim and not rest
kids in my pool were playing just like normal days

I am really really mixed on this. I've always been a frequent gym goer so initially hated it when they shut. I quickly adjusted though and have since ran miles outdoors, used a kettle bell, done HIIT at home and pilates at home.

I tentatively went back yesterday to try it out but am pretty sure I won't currently return. At my gym you are responsible for cleaning the equipment before using - so once somebody has used it, they are free to move on and it is the next person's responsibility to clean it. I felt like I spent half the session cleaning because on the static weight machines, its not just a case of a quick wipe over - you need to obviously wipe the seat/back of seat/weight adjustment screw, seat adjustor, etc. I completely get this, but in order to truly get the benefits of killing the virus (if it were on some equipment), I think a good thorough clean is necessary - we used to 'clean' equipment after using it anyway but this was far less important than it is now.
We also could only book for one hour, the staff looked petrified, the music was not on and it just felt really....weird. You can't shower, are advised not to use the toilet or water fountain, cannot take in towels, and are advised not to use lockers.

Not the gym but went back swimming today and loved it

crosseyedMary · 28/07/2020 17:18

the pool is so empty
oh the total bliss of an empty swimming pool

cyclingmad · 01/08/2020 21:56

My gym opened today soooo happy even if I can only do 45min slot, makes u work hard and fast haha. Only 2 other people in with me and some slots Ive booked ill be on my own. Wish slofs were longer in that case as numbers for gym are low but hey ho take what I can get. We had emails saying to wipe machines after use but staff said not to bother they clean after every slot but I still wipe cos only takes one person!

Love the extra space so yes I'll be going as much as I can

LoveBeingAMum555 · 01/08/2020 22:56

I used to love my gym but I found online classes in lockdown and its working really well for me, saving me a fortune too. Not keen on the idea of being in a class with other people and worrying that I will break one of the many rules. Don't think I will ever go back.

ListeningQuietly · 02/08/2020 13:54

I've loved going back to classes with an instructor who actually gives feedback
and its been lovely to see my friends again

Egghead68 · 02/08/2020 17:14

I have live online classes with my usual instructors who give feedback. They are working really well for me and I hope they continue.

ListeningQuietly · 02/08/2020 17:23

Egghead
I've done zoom classes with my fave instructors
but NOTHING beats being in the same room again
I knew I missed the physical company of friends
but by golly it was good to be back

I've been back since they reopened and loving it, temp check upon arrival, all stations cleaned after/before use. It's a different environment for sure but it's good to be back!
