What could I do in the evenings?

I am putting together a bank of suggestion for summer evenings. I am living alone, have a limited amount of money and no TV. What might I like to do so I feel less lonely.

Volunteer, find a walking group....

missingmum · 24/07/2020 19:09

Sewing, reading, yoga, colouring, online courses, gardening, pampering yourself.

Why no TV may I ask?

Panticles · 24/07/2020 19:17

Thanks all CokeEnStock. Those look like good day options. I do sometimes go for an evening stroll.
all missingmum. Those are excellent. No garden but I would not have thought of those.
I have left the family home because of DV and am without a job or many resources including a TV. It will be fine but it is mentally tough. It is much easier in the day, but I am low in the evening

I play a lot of online games, I am playing bridge most eveings on bridgebaseonline which is free, if you like card games. I interact and chat with the players from all over the world. I find it makes me feel less alone in the wee hours, that and coming on here for a chat. I couldnt cope without the odd bit if netflix though.

Have you got any decorating or DIY you could work on, maybe set yourself a project in the home and spend your evenings doing that.

I know what you mean though being alone at home in the evening is hard, even harder without a TV

Panticles · 24/07/2020 19:23

How do you tag someone?
Thanks all Jenasaurus. Online games sounds great. I am in a friends empty flat so can’t do DIY. What other games might I like online?

Open university do an interesting range of small free online courses. Tai chi, or sign up for something like the postcards of kindness Facebook group, or a pen pal group. Crochet and knitting. Listen to the radio - radio4 extra is my go to station, with a mug of hot chocolate with clean pjs on!

Bargebill19 · 24/07/2020 19:24

What about words with friends or online scrabble?

ineedaholidaynow · 24/07/2020 19:27

Cross stitch, you can get small starter kit quite cheaply.

Can also do jigsaw puzzles online.

BlueBirdGreenFence · 24/07/2020 19:32

Bullet journalling is cheap and fun. I could waste hours making pointless lists and decorating them in my notebook.

Panticles · 24/07/2020 19:32

all Bargebill19
They sound perfect. It has taken my emotional resources to get away and now I need to start to rebuild. Yoga, online games and radio with hot chocolate all sound great. You know like treating myself well.
Pampering is a bit out of my comfort zone and I have very little equipment but I guess I could file my nails and moisturise. No bath and no real shower though.

A friend of mine has started online life drawing and it's quite good value for money . I don't know if you enjoy art but I'm no artist but reckon I would do that and give it a go.

EmpressLangClegSpartacus · 24/07/2020 19:36

Another one for crochet (usually while listening to an audiobook) & yoga. I don’t have a TV either, Panticles, in my case mainly because there’s not much I’m bothered about watching, but phones / tablets / laptops are fine for the odd programme.

PotteringAlong · 24/07/2020 19:36

If you want to do yoga, look at yoga with adriene on youtube - some great different programs

Jigsaws? Can get them cheaply from the charity shop.

Have you got a radio? Keep that on, or listen to podcasts, just to keep the sound levels up!

Couch to 5k? Or local walking routes.

Geocaching? www.geocaching.com/play

If you have wifi, lots of good content on YouTube, including talks on recovery from DV. Also lots of free e-books, eg older classics, libraries.

Panticles · 24/07/2020 19:37

all ineedaholidaynow Perfect. I have done cross stitch before and have seen kits in the charity shops.
BlueBirdGreen. I think I would like to start with bullet journal. I just moved with a few things but I have a bit of money and I was kindly given a Marks voucher. I will buy a journal tomorrow and felt tips.
Then I can make a list of other possibilities. I feel more optimistic just thinking about that. Thank you so much.

I play way too much card games on this site - it can teach you some classic games like Hearts and Spades cardgames.io/

Dozer · 24/07/2020 19:37

Walking?

Panticles · 24/07/2020 19:40

PotteringAlong I am at friends this evening but don’t have Internet apart from data on my phone. Yoga is now on the list.

Radio 4. They do really good programmes.

If you join the library you can access online ebook apps for free.

Smarty were doing £10 SIM cards with 20gb last month if you need more data.

thriftyhen · 24/07/2020 19:47

Go for a walk/run. Join a walking group/running group. Offer to dog walk, if you don't have a dog of your own. Go to the supermarket for reduced price produce. Get an evening job such as shelf stacking in a supermarket. Offer to babysit. Facetime/Zoom call/phone your friends & family. I hope you find something to make you feel less lonely.

Bargebill19 · 24/07/2020 19:52

As thing start to open up again have you thought about joining a group? Learning to ring church bells is sociable and free, the WI is fairly low cost or join a knit and matter group. I realise that these are longer term things to consider rather than immediate. But you could explore such possibilities for the coming months? Double whammy of giving you something to occupy your evening now in research and actually attending them in the hopefully near future.

Dozer · 24/07/2020 19:52

That’s a shame about internet access. Libraries mostly shut at the moment: books from charity shops? They often have v good selection.

Lara53 · 24/07/2020 19:53

Borrow a dog to walk?

Panticles · 24/07/2020 19:54

all thriftyhen , I love those ideas. I think that they will go into phase 2. At the moment I am down but not out. Ideas that save money or generate income are all needed.
all Fluffycloudland77. Thanks I definitely need cheap data.
I am here for a week or so then have an offer of a room in Edinburgh for August. These ideas can travel with me.

Contact library and ask for their selection of books to read?
