Masks for under 3s

Just in case anyone isn't aware, Public Health England have advised that masks should not be worn by children under the age of 3 due to the risk of choking or suffocation. Please don't put them on your babies/toddlers!

I saw a really young child with one on in the forward facing pushchair today. It did look really dangerous.

Purplequalitystreet · 23/07/2020 21:10

I saw one as well. Can't have been older than 18 months. Surely the mask is riskier than the virus in such little ones?

At the start of the pandemic I saw people advertising and sharing to sew them to dummies. All I could think of is suffocation!

BilboBercow · 24/07/2020 12:15

Yep the national cot death society warn against them for kinds under 5 I believe

Sailingblue · 24/07/2020 12:24

I’ve got an 16m old and it would be utter lunacy to put one on her. I’m amazed people have been putting them on babies and I’m glad the warning has been issued.

Shayisgreat · 24/07/2020 12:25

I thought it was common knowledge not to put masks on young children?

TempsPerdu · 24/07/2020 12:40

I caught the train on Tuesday with DD2, was stopped by station staff and told that she should be wearing a mask, despite my protestations that this was contrary to the guidelines. I’m writing a formal complaint today and will include PHE’s advice in that, so thanks for the heads up! Smile

But if I dont put a mask on my 2 year old how will people know I'm taking covid very seriously?

cupoftea84 · 24/07/2020 13:03

We put one in our 2 year old. Otherwise he pulls at ours and wants to put them on. It's only in shops. He wants to be the same as us and I don't want him scared of people in masks.
I'm aware they're considered a risk so it's always monitored and never when he's sleepy.
If it means we can go out without him pulling at ours what's the issue?

I seen someone pushing a baby that looked around 18months-2 in a trike wearing a face mask, I was really shocked! It’s the same with people who cover their prams with blankets though in hot weather thinking they are protecting their child from the sun, so even with the warnings people will still do it
