I remember a few weeks ago that there was talk of a 'summer school catchup scheme'. What happened with this? Binned?

all complete bollocks - just like the NHS volunteer army.......
God I hate these lying bastards.

Lemons1571 · 20/07/2020 19:17

That’s another thing - is there still a nhs volunteer army? Ready to do all our shopping come the November winter wave?

Like the majority of government announcements to do with schools it was a case of announce first and then see if it would work. All they have is to try and placate parents whilst the dfe and schools are left thinking wtf is happening now.

One pipe dream after another ...

  • All key workers children guaranteed a space every school day
  • Summer catch up
  • All primary back after half term
  • All year 10 and 12 back full time after half term

Parents calling school saying the government/Boris/Big Gav said xyz And then school has to say but Dfe/gov science guidelines state abc

It has all been bollocks. Da Funky Elephants keep issuing guidelines for schools and we keep reacting. I don’t even have my timetable yet for September just in case something happens.

The October exams are going to create chaos in schools. There is no way we can have run revision classes for those as we need to finish courses etc for the next year 11 and 13 coming through.

2%budget increase covers diddly squat - school pension contributions going up, impact of inflation on consumables. Thanks dishy Rishi but we need a lot more than 2% to balance our budgets.

Who mentioned laptops for the vulnerable? They arrived in schools last week!! And we were not impressed by govt definition of “vulnerable”. Certainly we felt our most vulnerable didn’t get them ...

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 20/07/2020 22:27

Yes forgot about the laptop debacle

So in terms of who should be on the vulnerable list we had school version, government version and the MN version😂😂

There is some sort of tutoring mentioned on TES today. If you have a degree and a GCSE in maths, you can do it with 2 weeks training. If you are a teacher already, you can do it with 1 week training. For £19k.

So they've basically said that PGCE/B.Ed plus an NQT year can be covered in a week. Way to devalue teaching. Again.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 20/07/2020 23:55

Our school is going to extend the day by 45mins instead

I don't want my 9 year old in school 8.30-4. Its annextra basic skills class too so more of the same spag and maths. I really despair and wish I could send her private instead.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 20/07/2020 23:56

I know the private day would be a aimilar lengrh but you'd hope made up of extra pe and more interesting maths, and forest school/extra curricular etc.

@Piggywaspushed

These are the initial details:

www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/jul/20/boris-johnson-to-unveil-pupil-funding-plan-during-school-visit

Today it was announced that all schools will get at least 2% extra in their budget next year If we are lucky that might cover all the extra hazard tape, signage and anti bac that have been bought from existing funds.

My thoughts exactly. How dare they offer such a ridiculous amount!
caringcarer · 21/07/2020 00:51

Williamson said on radio today schools are getting extra funding but can decide how to use it. That would mean just keeping it then.

caringcarer · 21/07/2020 00:52

But schools were not allowed to pay teachers for working over summer it was supposed to be paid to army of tutors used to catch kids up.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 21/07/2020 08:09

So according to TES the funding for the teacher pay rise will have to come from within schools’ existing budgets. So ultimately whether you get the headline teacher pay rise being announced this morning may depend as much on your school’s finances as the chancellor’s intention.

The 3.1 per cent headline pay rise announced by the chancellor may not end up benefitting all teachers as schools are supposed to use performance pay with rises passed on at their own discretion. In February a union survey found that less than half (49 per cent) of teachers had received the 2.75 per cent rise agreed by the Department for Education for 2019/20.

Plus Da Funky Elephants preferred option is for NQTs to get 9.5% and for experienced teachers to barely get inflation.

Summer catch up is not happening- it has already been pushed to October by which time there will be no money

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 21/07/2020 09:41

Ah is it October? That's why our extended days are starting october ...

sindylouwho · 21/07/2020 09:43

Teachers and school staff need a break. It was a stupid idea and even more stupid to mention it.

starfish4 · 21/07/2020 15:48

Our school made the decision not to open/do remote learning during the holidays as most of the staff have been working longer hours (keyworker children doing longer days, as well as remote learning for their class and phone calls to parents/children) and gave up their easter and half term holidays. They feel they need a break so they're refreshed and can hopefully throw themselves into starting afresh in September and catch up. Other than last minute class preparation and anything that needs to be dealt with if restrictions change, they can have the majority of their unpaid break.
