Who else is going on their precovid booked holiday?

Just wondering. Most people I know hadn’t booked yet so have opted for a staycation. We (DH, dd who is 18m and me) already had a week on a Greek island booked for August and intend on going. I’m actually really excited! Apartment holiday not hotel which I understand may be a bit different. Wondering who else is as bonkers as us?!
@lifesalongsong maybe not .. but honestly I don’t know anyone who’s going away this year ! And I get the distinct impression others think we are a little bonkers going!
Really? My Facebook feed is full of holiday posts, friends without school age children already there, others going this weekend or counting down for the next couple of weeks. I'm in an area with a relatively low number of cases so maybe that is a factor.

Mallorca in a few weeks with little ones and can't wait. We booked last year but it got cancelled and a few weeks ago we rebooked the same holiday but flying from a different airport. It is a hotel holiday.

PaperMonster · 19/07/2020 20:37

We’re going away to our pre-covid booked holiday. Our May holiday was cancelled so am really looking forward to this one!!

cologne4711 · 19/07/2020 20:42

We were meant to go to Scotland in early September but ds' college are actually going back a week early which means the dates don't work. And it doesn't look like the Scottish authorities are really keen on tourism from England anyway.

I would book something else but now you can't get insurance, am loathe to book anything in case we have to cancel for some sort of covid related reason. We often go to Jersey but you can't book as a package for the hotel we stay in, and while it is amazingly lovely, it has draconian cancellation rules (though I guess they would potentially let us move the booking).

Off to Greece at the end of July (booked flights last September). Really looking forward to it now. We were really apprehensive, but apparently people are being sensible at airports and on flights which is the main concern. Feedback so far from people flying into Greece from UK (only started last week) is positive. Apparently no British tourists tested positive for the virus in the first two days (random testing of all flights being carried out). We stay in self-catering apartment miles from anywhere and eat on the beach each evening, so probably as safe as anywhere. We are being very careful and self-isolating as much as possible anyway so feel any risk is negligible.

We did - recently back from horse riding in Iceland

HairyFloppins · 19/07/2020 20:51

I booked ours last month after our USA road trip got cancelled, a week in Spain in the car. It's all fully refundable should Spain lockdown again which they might if the cases keep going up. DH and DD have been working throughout all this and are exhausted.

Good to read other people are going away.

delilahbucket · 19/07/2020 21:11

Booked Sicily in January for the end of August. We'll be on the flight and I can't wait. We've had to cancel our wedding and honeymoon so I think another cancellation would have broken me. I've had two days off work since lockdown so I really do need some rest. We're in a villa, with full self catering facilities, with a car hired from the airport, so minimal risk for us.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 19/07/2020 21:20

I wish. I was supposed to be leaving on Thursday (booked last year) but Tui have cancelled all long haul. We have to wait until February now!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 19/07/2020 21:38

I would have gone if it hadn't been cancelled. I don't know anyone who is going abroad, but, we are in Scotland and already half way through the holidays. People often go right at the start of school hols and restrictions were only just starting to be lifted then.

Frostylawns · 19/07/2020 21:47

@jessy2018
We took the overnight ferry which was great! Brittany ferries have been really good - honest about the situation and happy to move our booking as originally we were going in to Bilbao. Went to the bar for a drink in our masks before bed - all good. Super clean cabin as usual. Life is continuing here albeit with face masks in enclosed spaces. However we’re really not going indoors so haven’t experienced it much.

KitKat1985 · 19/07/2020 21:51

Hoping to be going to Majorca in August and looking forward to it. Unfortunately no idea whether it'll happen or not yet as the hotel we've booked is currently closed. Confused

TimeForLunch · 19/07/2020 21:57

Currently in Portugal and it's great! So nice to be away. We didn't book it pre-COVID though, was a last minute decision.

samandpoppysmummy · 19/07/2020 22:07

I'm in the South of France at the moment with my teenage DC and we're having a lovely holiday :) We flew out on the 15th July. No queues at all at Heathrow and also very quiet when we arrived at the airport in Nice, it was great! I'm so glad we came. Mine wasn't actually a pre-COVID holiday though - I had booked two weeks in California which was cancelled and fortunately refunded. I booked my flights to France the day Boris announced there was no longer any quarantine.

PoopySalata · 19/07/2020 22:09

I'm going to Tenerife on Friday. We had booked flights for a two week break back in October.

I've not got any contract work until September (due to Covid) so I've changed the return flight to the 30th August. Some people may have suggested I'm a little bonkers.

I'm taking my 7 and 8 year old daughters, we're going to spend the whole summer out there and I can't wait!

Charlottejade89 · 20/07/2020 13:38

were going to kefalonia at the end of August and I can't wait, just abit anxious that they are going to block uk flights again after a small rise in cases but as long as the flight is going, I'll be on it

summersolstice43 · 20/07/2020 13:56

I've been booked and paid since last August, we go in 4 weeks time so if I don't go I loose out everything due to it being non refundable. So we've got all the necessary stuff, masks, sanitisers etc. And most of the resort is open as I've been following updates on the businesses pages on social media. Might be a bit quieter but things are open.

zafferana · 20/07/2020 15:26

Our summer holiday, booked pre-Covid, is in the UK because we were due to do something expensive at Easter (which was cancelled). Still going on the UK break and looking forward to it. We went away last week too somewhere in the UK and it was SO nice to have a change of scene.

ASchuylerSister · 20/07/2020 17:18

We’re driving to France this week via the eurotunnel. We’ll keep ourselves to ourselves when we’re away and avoid crowds etc.

Some people are judgy on MN about others still going on their holiday abroad but I think that a camping holiday in the uk where you’re sharing facilities is riskier than a mobile home holiday in France.

If I was living in a hotspot I’d think twice but I only know 3 friends of friends who have had it - 2 people who work together had it (unconfirmed cases) the week before lockdown and another man who caught it (confirmed case) from his wife who’s a nurse. Im lucky to not know anyone who has died from it.

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 20/07/2020 17:36

We have Croatia booked for mid-August and intend to still go (driving and then self-catering). We also had a diving holiday booked to Egypt for end-August but that has been shifted to next year.

pankake · 21/07/2020 17:36

we're off to spain in two weeks woth kids. cant wait! only booked it beginning of july after our original holiday got cancelled earlier

Aridane · 21/07/2020 19:35

I would book something else but now you can't get insurance, am loathe to book anything in case we have to cancel for some sort of covid related reason.

@cologne4711 - take a look at the TUI COVID promise

If you get Covid before your holiday and cannot travel, you get a full refund

If you get Covid in your TUI holiday, they pay for your medical care, accommodation and meals. And any rescheduled flights.

And, finally, they guarantee to take you only to places you don’t have to quarantine on arrival or on return to the UK. (of course that means you run the risk of the trip being cancelled as and when advice changes)

So basically TUI throw in their own covid travel insurance which travel insurers have now largely withdrawn

Aposterhasnoname · 21/07/2020 19:38

Off to Gran Canaria on Saturday, booked last Saturday. Then we’re off to Tenerife at the beginning of September. Can’t wait.
