Mask recommendations please

Can anyone recommend a washable mask? I wear surgical masks for work, but need to get one for shopping. I have seen many people wearing cloth ones that don't fit and slip down so they constantly fiddle with them, or just wear below the nose.

I looked online but many mixed reviews, or come from China so take ages.

So, what masks do you recommend please?

I heard a radio advertisement for these yesterday. So when I run out of the supply I have I will be getting these. They sell to the general public.

Have you tried making one yourself? There are a range of different patterns available and some don't require any sewing skills or elastic.

Have a look at sock masks online too - you can use a piece of kitchen paper inside to make a filter

HolyCorona · 18/07/2020 09:58

Thanks @FatherBrownsBicycle but those aren't washable.

@FatherBrownsBicycle don't think I want to wear an old sock on my face Grin. Those homemade pleated ones don't seem to fan out like the surgical masks to create a good fit.

I recommend these, pleated two layer cotton with a pocket sewn in if you want to add a filter, nose pinch wire so they don't slip, adjustable ear elastics. They do fan out and fit comfortably under my chin. Wash well too.

They're a small Cumbrian business who normally make dog and cat collars in lovely fabrics. Face coverings available in gorgeous prints, £4.99 each, low cost postage UK wide, quick delivery.

I ordered on line and have just picked up these from my local store

direct.asda.com/george/women/accessories/white-washable-unisex-face-covering-2-pack/GEM787750,default,pd.html?cgid=D1M1G20C16&placement_id=GRGPPH&strategy=product-to-product&config_id=GRGPPH&product_id=GEM787750&parent_item_id=GEM787751

I'm very happy with them ,they are light ,stretchy fabric throughout .The top and bottom are sort of ribbed and ensure a snug fit .

They are out of stock of black but I'm considering ordering more and dyeing them .

My best buy so far ,2.50 for 2 .

Sexnotgender · 18/07/2020 12:56

I’ve just bought another 2 of these. I bought 2 from the seller already.
They fit well (I tied the elastic a little tighter on mine but they fit my husband well). They also have a nose wire which helps keep them in place and stops my glasses getting steamed up.

I bought this one from etsy. It is the only mask I've found that doesn't result in steamed up glasses:

I bought mine and my four year olds from www.homebymuddyboots.com
Really lovely and soft melt blown filtered cotton masks that you can wash - they sell storage bags for them too.

Wynona · 18/07/2020 13:41

I wanted a colour that suited me. The masks are currently sold out, but I found Kettlewell very comfortable. There are also straps to tighten them up.

I bought two from hannahschoice on etsy.
They're really comfortable and can be adjusted. I also wear glasses and have not been a problem.
I ended up buying more. They fit all my kids to (aged 11-16).

HolyCorona · 18/07/2020 14:32

@peridito thank you, that look good.

I agree. Mabel & Mu are really good, I also recommend them! I have bought several masks from them and they wash really well. Compared with prices on etsy etc they are extremely good value and the postage costs are low.

RiverFlowers · 18/07/2020 15:55

Does anyone know those plastic face visors count as a "face covering"? Would be easier than a mask with wearing glasses!

They are so pretty!
littlebirdieblue · 19/07/2020 11:13

@SunsetBeetch they are aren't they! I have the hearts and my daughters both have the pinky leopard print ones 😍

cologne4711 · 19/07/2020 11:46

I bought a pair on Etsy and also ordered some from Seasalt.

Those homemade pleated ones don't seem to fan out like the surgical masks to create a good fit.

I've worn both my own homemade pleased masks and 'surgical' masks given to me to wear by HCPs in healthcare settings. The homemade ones fan out just as well as the 'surgical'. They for fear better than the surgical mails as I can adjust them to have no gaps at all, not even at the sides. The only drawback to the homemade masks is that they are warmer than the paper masks.
