Prepping for winter??

Helenj1977 · 17/07/2020 11:26

Probably get a lot of negative comments on this but I'm a preparer. I started prepping in February for coronavirus. I'm glad I did. Everyone is different so please don't leave negative comments.

I'm thinking anti bac wipes, gel, soap and masks. I'll just add an extra one to my weekly shopping.

I'm not worried about shops this time so food etc isn't on my list.

Anyone else thinking about it?

Prepping too. We couldn't get hand gel at all when all the panic buying started and loo roll was scarce. Now, I add a handgel to each shop and more loo roll every other shop. Same with pasta and flour. Anti bac wipes, bottled water, soups and tinned fruit. All just a couple of tins each shop, not bulk buying, but it means we wont have worries if supplies are low in the winter. We got a small freezer but looking to see if we can get a small chest freezer.

PJsEveryday · 17/07/2020 11:38

Oh, sorry, not food related. Tissues and kitchen roll, toiletries batteries. We bought some jigsaws and puzzle books cos it will be bleak if we have to lock down in the winter. I might also stock up on alcohol too 😀

Helenj1977 · 17/07/2020 11:43

Thank you. I hadn't thought about puzzles etc. I might get another cheap fridge freezer. We'll use it all year round as well. Milk storage was a pain at the start of lockdown!

I've started Christmas shopping and have told family we're doing our own dinner this year 😢

I’m going to build up stock of toilet roll and toiletries - hand soap etc again.
Only things I will stock up again food wise are tomato based products - tinned toms, purée etc, pasta/rice/noodles, flour/sugar etc as those were the only things out of stock and couldn’t be substituted

Will make sure school supplies stay topped up - paper, printer ink, glue, felt tips, etc. Just in case schools go back to home learning and it’s all stuff that will get used eventually anyway

House stuff - light bulbs, batteries, cleaning supplies, etc

Make sure kids have good coats, wellies and water proof trousers for the winter. If lockdown happens again then will be good to get out for walks even if raining.

We have plenty of board games but buy a couple of new ones

De-icer and other bits for car travel/maintenance

TinselTortoise · 17/07/2020 11:52

I have never prepped before but after what has just happened, I am doing it now. My husband has been shielding too so at times we were really struggling to get food and essentials. I'm just adding a couple of extra tins/packets to my weekly shop so if we do have a second wave we will be more prepared.

TinselTortoise · 17/07/2020 11:52

Oh and yes to the printer ink. Been a nightmare to get hold of!

fabulous40s · 17/07/2020 12:00

Genuinely curious - didn't you learn you didn't need it first time round? We never ran out of anything. Maybe we are lucky as we live in a large city.

Howaboutanewname · 17/07/2020 12:02

Yes, been adding the odd thing onto my shopping and have a box under my bed. Just need to make sure stuff is rotated regularly. There is Brexit to contend with on top of a potential second wave. Loo roll, cleaning products, toiletries, handwash, antibacterial gel for hands when out and about, flour, baking powder, yeast, tomatoes and tomato purée, tinned fruit and pasta. I am concerned about what may have happened in fruit and veg growing areas in other countries in terms of farming during the last few months - I don’t know if some products might be in short supply as a result?

PJsEveryday · 17/07/2020 12:05

Bulbs and printer ink - added to the list.

We did run out - in trued to get handgel from the beginning of march and just couldn't. We couldn't get flour, rice and pasta, or tinned tomatoes and tomato puree. We battered down the hatches and didnt go to the supermarket but certainly in the online shopping, we could not get those items for at least a month. All ok now, so adding a few extras each shop.

Meruem · 17/07/2020 12:06

I'm the same as you all, mostly pasta/tins/loo roll etc. Anything for Christmas that won't go off or can be freezed. Plus gifts etc. The way I see it, it doesn't hurt to prepare and will save rushing round last minute, even if we aren't locked down or anything like that.

Mumtumwobble · 17/07/2020 12:07

I’m definitely going to get prepared this time. I’ve already started getting a few bits here and there.

TheDrsDocMartens · 17/07/2020 12:15

We were prepped for Brexit issues so didn’t do too bad initially. Still not easy getting affordable flour though 🙄

Well I ran out of flour/sugar so yes should have stocked up on that.

Ran out of printer ink and still find it hard to find the ink for my printer. Out of stock most usual prices or going for triple the amount on amazon

Kids outgrew all their shoes during lockdown.

There were lots of items that our supermarkets were completely out of - pasta etc was a good few weeks before we could get hold of any.

Cuddling57 · 17/07/2020 12:52

I think I may start planning jobs around the house so buy some paint etc. Incase we are stuck at home more than normal and bored!

kimlo · 17/07/2020 13:04

I'm getting in extra of things like pasta. Mostly because worse case is we are asked to self isolate by track and trace then we start to get unwell. Yes we can get delivery slots now but they are sometimes a week away, not like before this when I could book one for the next day.

I'm picking up hand sanatiser with each shop because I'm going to need more once everybody is back at school and work and using public transport more. Masks are ok because we have washable ones. I've stocked up on cleaning products and hand wash.

I've discovered it's cheaper and easier for me to buy 45 toilets rolls from amazon.

NK346f2849X127d8bca260 · 17/07/2020 13:27

I am going to add in a couple of items each time i do a food shop, we struggled to get food when teen ds caught Covid at end of March.
I also realise what a pain having no cash in house was, in our local area a group was set up to do shopping for those self isolating but you had to give the shopper cash. We had very little to eat those two weeks, fortunately did have a stockpile of toilet rolls though!

Also curious about this as we never ran out of anything either. I stocked up on UHT milk and we only ever had to use one carton, I was unamused, the only time I’ve ever prepped for anything and it was pointless! Not a mocking post, you do you - but here (London) it was literally only a couple of weeks where toilet roll and hand soap and flour were hard to get hold of.
DawnMumsnet · 17/07/2020 13:42

Hi @Helenj1977 - we have a dedicated Preppers topic - just wondered if you'd like us to move your thread over there?

Just hit the report button on your opening post if so. Smile

CMOTDibbler · 17/07/2020 13:45

I live in a very small town, and we have a small Co-op and a larger (but not big) Asda - its 7 miles to the next supermarket. For weeks, the Co-op looked like it had been ransacked, and its only really this week that stock levels look normal. Asda has had massive queues to get in throughout. We've been able to get things from farm shops, so food isn't an issue, but dog food, cat food, cleaning products etc were much more of a pain esp when Amazon weren't managing so well

OverTheRainbow88 · 17/07/2020 13:51

I’m prepping by getting super healthy incase I get it. So taking Vit D and eating healthy and trying to loose a bit of weight!

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 17/07/2020 13:53

We used all our uht milk, and pasta, and ran out of rice, pasta and soup, Shampoo and Gluten free flour.
So I'll be getting GF flour, rice, pasta and soup etc this time. I already bought some LED lamps, and battery packs for the iPhones. Dh got light bulbs.

1forAll74 · 17/07/2020 14:08

No, I am not thinking about Winter and certainly not Christmas, I don't ever buy wipes or sanitiser stuff. The world seems to be full of wipes for this, wipes for that. I have always got bars of soap in, as don't like plastic bottles of gel stuff for bathing. ( I wouldn't like to run out of cat food though !

I think right now it is wise to stock up on 2 weeks worth of stuff in case you need to self isolate or become unwell. When you get the inevitable coughs and colds this winter you can't go around like you normally would,

I'm not doing much prepping, just making sure I have a two week supply of essentials, including cat food and litter.

teablanket · 17/07/2020 15:16

Mild prepping here. Just the stuff we've had issues finding locally - toilet paper, pasta, flour, soap, paper, etc. We always try to keep a decent stock of tins, so we'll be keeping up with that.

I'm a bit wary of Christmas prepping just yet. No idea what our situation will be in December. I've bought a couple of gifts for DS but nothing else.
